  • Bloody awsome..thanks so much for this...I covered this race as a photojournalist and with my hero Gilles Villeneuve winning...its burnt into my soul Freezing cold made it so hard to change roll after roll of FILM..my old hands were just shakin glad no more October races

  • Big balls of stainless steel, O_0

  • The only time i want Murray Walker to STFU,

  • Every time I watch videos like this, It makes me hate modern F1 for a few hours.

  • 2:49

    unbelievable

  • @OdrikT800 2:07 had me on pins and needles.

  • Wonder how long would Hamilton last under this condition.

  • @hajimekishi Well if you watched the British GP in 2008 then you'd know, he would cope very well.

  • How can he fit in his car while sitting on those MASSIVE BALLS of his?

  • I used to drive like this, but then I took an arrow in the knee..-

  • @maximana reality- He used to drive like this, but then he took an alfa f1 to the Hockenheim

  • he isn't driving, he is sailing

  • BALLS

  • 3:18 until 3:30, 12 seconds pure opposite lock madness! All with the throttle planted all the way down!

  • This guy is basically driving like I would in a game, just keep that foot down during massive over-steers... Massive balls

  • and we thought Aryton Senna had amazing car control...

  • 4:52 glad its over? i think he's having massive fun out there... sliding, drifting, wheelspin, the lot... and he has a bloody stick shift... not a flappy paddle 'box of today... if it were that wet out there at Montreal these days, there would be red flags everywhere... this guy's totally badass...

  • like a bowous

  • When MEN drove F1 cars

  • Damn, he must have HUGE balls!

  • This is making me wet!

  • 3:55 Best formula 1 drift I have ever seen.

  • The amount of time he had that thing at oppo lock was brilliant. Too bad the FIA didn't allow this years F1 drivers to show the same amount of skill...

  • Greates 240p video IN THE WORLD

  • great thing is all the cars sounded like this, all with the ford dfv :P amazing driving, more so than button on this track i have to admit :L

  • THE SOUND!!! my god

  • 5 people drive with traction control ON

  • @pio000001 ROFLMAO! Nice

  • they still had races when it was raining, nowadays they red flag the race when it starts raining or they drive behind the safety car

  • Can you believe this is a v8 engine?

I just came from a video watching Nico Rosberg driving the current Mercedes v8 and how different they sound!

And to think that Patrick Depailler would only live another 2 years.

He was a great driver and would have done much better in a better car if given the chance.

It's a shame there were so many fatalities back in the earlier days of f1.

    RIP Patrick Depailler.

I will try and find the '78 Monaco f1 gp that he won, I'm sure it was a great race.

  • @miles2057 because this car was in comparison with nowadays F1s low revving V8.though

  • @karelpipa 18,000 rpm is not low revving

  • @MrStig691 yeah i said that

  • Best F1 onboard video of all times!great!thx!

  • there simply isnt any reason to watch todays F1. pity.

  • @EvilCrewMember I don´t believe that to be true.. We are living a great F1 era in terms of drivers... I agree that F1 today is tottaly diferent from 70´s, 80´s, 90´s, , but that´s the thing about F1, it only got to these amazing cars in the 70´s by evolving from those in the 30, 40´s and 50´s... It´s evolution. Every era was different, but i think that 10years from now we are going to be saying, those were the days refering to 07, 08, 09, 10, 11. It happended with the 90´s after the turbo era.

  • @JONICRACHATLEITAO well that is your opinion. these old days were exciting, because drivers had to be driving masters. todays cars are handled by gigabytes of software instead of skilled persons =/= not exciting. my opinion.

  • @EvilCrewMember Of course, and i´m not trying to change your opinion, just saying my opinion :) I guess with smaller tyres as today, no traction control, F1 got more exciting.. But it could use a bit more power i guess, but i don´t find it boring. Tomorrow´s race is going to be great..

  • Best onboard video i've ever saw!

  • this was made for the film, lap of the gods, i have it on dvd :D

  • Amazing control!!!!!!

  • Vettel cant...didnt you see practice for this years Turkish Grand Prix? Bang in the barrier!

  • Beat this, Mr. Vettel!

  • @mininow Thats the famous Murray Walker you're calling an idiot...

  • @bumeyes yeahh.... because we don´t have famous idiots in this world...

  • Haha let's see Vettel doing this!

  • that's more than just "wet" lol

  • Nowadays, they already red flagged the session in this weather =_=

  • 1:08 scared me shitless! STFU noob, i wanna hear the engine!

  • @mininow you calling me a noob?

  • @fgtxpaco7458ss If you're the one who's screaming in the vid, then yes, but i don't think that's the case :)

His voice is soo fuckin annoying, why do idiot commentators always have to ruin such good vids??

  • @mininow thats there jobs _- i agree there voices ruins the engines sounds at least is not the entire vid like some vids btw you know how much this engine revs? 16.000rpms or 14.000rpms?

  • @fgtxpaco7458ss I have no idea about the engine

  • @fgtxpaco7458ss this is a cosworth dfv . maximum rev. about 10.000 rpm. fantastic engine

  • @franneck1989 the engine make porn sound :D!

  • how much did this car rev?

  • 5 greenpeace guys voted unlike because they think 1200 bhp isn't enough...

  • BIG BALLS

  • This, F1 drivers of today, is how you really drive in Montreal.

  • @karaokequeen3 I think Jenson got it down pretty well this past year. Those last few laps were amazing.

  • SHOW THIS TO TODAY F1 PUSSYS!

  • STOP .... STOP !! That first wheelspin in the very begining almost made me cry. This is absolutely insane !!

  • Most people don't realise Depailler really was nuts - this guy wasn't the quickest out there, but he was fearless. He died about a year after nearly killing himself and smashing his legs up in a hang gliding accident - He truly did live fast die young - he didn't register fear the way other racing drivers might. Some might say he was reckless - but certainly fun

  • Song name: Tyrrell 1978

    Artist: Patrick Depailler

  • @JMGV196 Hah! Best one I've heard in a while!

  • @JMGV196 Feat: Murray Walker

  • @JMGV196 instrument: ford dfv

  • @JMGV196 A little adjustment if I may :) Song Name: Tyrrell 008 Live in Montreal :)

  • dangerous but cool

  • Those years the drivers had balls and skill!! no elecrtonics!!!

  • @poleposition01 Its based less car control now, but equal if not faster response required as the cars entry and exit speeds are much higher, and more physical fitness, as they pull up to negative 6G in breaking, and up to 5.5G in corners for extended periods of time. So it's still a challenge, and Traction control was banned a few years ago again, so no electronics either. Just now they're more reliant on downforce, then mechanical grip, and technology behind them make them easier to control.

  • f**k yeah!

  • said in Duke Nukem voice: "I've got balls of steel !!!!"

  • I bet this guy had an extra guy in his pit crew to carry his big balls around

  • Fantastic! Leading with your fingertips and at the same time with the knife between his teeth. Amazing video!

  • and they thought it was too wet to start the korean grand prix last season. ha!

  • that tyrrell lost control when changing gears i suppose?

  • and the greatest f1 driver of all time won there his first gp that year

  • f1 1978...1994 >>>>>>>>>>>F1 2010

  • " It's at times like these that the racing driver really earns his money, despite the deeply proved rain tyres on his Tyrell. Patrick Depailler is constanty fighting wheel spin as he slivers and slides his way round this remarkable Montreal circuit ".

  • Now this is what I call skill, using extremely unmodified cars for the conditions and old school tyres....just brilliant. Plus this is true skill with no power steering, more modern tyres and a flappy-paddle gearbox, just tyres, a proper manual gearbox with and a steering wheel attached to the wheels. Pure skill, R.I.P Depailler

  • smooth drver and man of few words!

    RIP

  • One of the best onboard lap of all time!!!

  • Ce car control de fou... Respect !

  • balls of steel and amazing car control.

  • Patrick Depailler " What is this Aquaplaning?"

  • There are just about no trees around the circuit!

  • just like eddie in the wet at detroit, awsome awsome car control.one mistake and your gonna have a headache. the turbo era rules,no electronic magic here !!!

  • Comment removed

  • @thegriff2 @thegriff2 Erm...there´s no turbo in Patrick´s car. Only Renault had turbos in 1978.

In fact the racing was much better in the 70's than in the 80's, the turbo era.

  • HOLY WET SHIT.

  • This + murray walker , can't get much better

  • Pussy pilots of todays era wouldn`t even sit theyr jolly asses in the car with this sort of track!i`ll bet that not even with all theyr traction controlls and electronic shity helps they would do much better than this man with huge "cojones"! These ware the days when the pilot would make more of a difference than the technology on the car! Manual or semi auto shifting with absolutly no electricall shit correcting or doing the job for you!

    Big thanks for uploading!

    Cheers!

  • God damn ... I can't get one of these to go in a str8 line in a PC game sim , and this guy runs the real one like a champ on something that looks like a freaking LAKE !

  • I would have loved to have seen an onboard of Gilles Villeneuve around here

  • @Juihi2 Yes me 2 Winner of that race :D By the way there is any OnBoard of Gilles?

  • AMAZING MAN! GREAT CAR CONTROL!!!

  • from 0:01 to 4:54

    Great car control

  • Tifo is right on I would dare any current generation F1 driver to get in one of these cars and do as good!

  • Holy fuck

  • insane !!!

  • Nowadays, they don't even drive in this conditions because it is 'too unsafe' ...

  • I want F1 to be like that today !!

Ca me rappelle des souvenirs de f-2000 sur le circuit mont-tremblant..

  • can barely see the track, is it driving on a shallow stream?

  • "its times like these a racing driver really earns his money".... well said muzza!

  • driving lesson... :)

  • lovely, absolutely brilliant

  • At 0:38 DAAAAUUUUMMMMNNNNNN!!!!!! :D

  • nice video...

  • At 1:44 now that's what I call drifting.

  • Putain, quelle maîtrise... ça c'est du pilotage.

  • Remarkable skill. Goes to show that the old F1 guys are truly better than any current driver.

FYI, these cars were terrifyingly powerful. I think I remember seeing somewhere a interview with Niki Lauda, where he said himself that these cars were downright scary at times. Pretty much, the engines were far too much for the chassis, and whenever you even applied pressure to the throttle, you would end up with massive wheelspin.

No, with that said, try driving in a downpour. Remarkable stuff.

  • todays drivers are no less skilled than the drivers during the 70's and 80's. the difference is drivers back then knew the risks if they went off, unlike todays drivers who know the car and barriers will save them. patrick knew the opposite would be true and sadly he paid that price to show how brave he was,

  • real racers enjoy that weather

  • 2:48, amazing sound and amazing car control. This times were the best in the f1 history.

P.D: 3:56, crazy drift, depailler rules!!!

  • @macwatherspoon 2:48 MASSIVE WIN!

  • 3:53 amazing

  • love these old on-boards... Depailler had mega car control!!

  • Note the long and soft downshift, to prevent rear wheel slide by engine blocking...really nice...

  • It depends on the kind of racing you like. Some people like to see powerful and superfast technologically advanced cars, while others like to see "manual" cars oversteering with the driver changing gears manually and long battles... I like the second type of racing. Like in MotoGP

  • yeah. that's why michael schumacher moved from Benneton to Ferrari. from a powerfull team the most powerfull to a strugling team - ferrari. Michael said that he mattered the way he won the races.

  • @tifosaurus Good point but I do find the MotoGP thing abit too far ( it's kind lof a terrible sport)

  • Comment removed

  • @tifosaurus Who have you seen oversteer a manual car in MotoGP then?

  • @jamemarsh My point is that in MotoGP racing is more "pure", same as in old F1 :ppp

  • @tifosaurus not any more they got traction control now and the 800cc are not as power as 1000cc.

  • @tifosaurus

Well, Moto GP still got TC and very very advanced electronics. No doubting their skills. But still.

  • 1:46 - 1:51 Niiiiiiiiice!

  • I would love to see one of the modern day f1 drivers try and do that, i really doubt that any of them barr the finns and vettel could manage it!

  • I think you seriously underestimate the quality of driver it takes to drive a modern F1 car.

  • modern drivers couldn't do that, theres to much electronic aids now, get rid of them and they might be able to again

  • Traction and launch control have been gone for a while mate, how long has it been since you watched F1?

  • at what point did i meantion either of them?

  • So would you like to explain what "electronic aids" you are referring to?

  • power steering, stability control, auto clutches, anti-stall and flappy paddle gears for that matter

  • Current F1 cars still have manual clutches, look at a steering wheel of any of the cars, they have a clutch paddle on both sides of the wheel, usually above the shift paddles. Its only needed when starting from a stand still or during a wreck or spin, but its still manual, any sequential shift car is the same way, they just have a clutch pedal instead of paddles. Its not your typical clutch, but its certainly not fully automatic.

  • They need to use those paddles to pull of nothing else... They are in no control of the clutch until they want to pull away, Vettel gave a prime example, when he spun a sepang and stalled, he could do nothing because of the auto clutch and anti-stall.. so its not still manual

  • yeah, basically you can tell someone is an idiot if they say things like modern drivers cant drive bla bla

only people that are worst are the ones that are saying: xx f1 driver is a joke blah blah

no point in arguing with them also, since they are too dumb to understand that technical progress is a big part of f1, and these kind of arguments make no sense, just look at some drivers that have been driving for a few different eras, like Prost, and have adjusted themselves just fine

  • Well said.

  • I'm sorry, but anyone that actually thinks this is a complete moron. Nowadays there's so many bloody junior classes of racing that F1 can draw talent from. Sooo many aspiring drivers out there that you have to be extremely good to get noticed in the massive crowd. Hamilton,Vettel,Webber, Alonso, Massa; they could all do this well. If they couldn't then who,in your opinion, in the modern day could? Did an "epic driving" gene die out sometime in the early eighties?

  • The cars have changed but natural human talent for operating complicated machines at high speed couldn't have really changed that much in a couple of decades. Moss,Clark,J. Villeneuve,Senna, Hamilton,Prost,Nouvalari,Fangio,Schumacher; they're all from the same drawer, the top one.

  • 3rd time iv watched this, i still get a thrill just from watching him go around like that!

  • 1:48 omg

  • HOLY CRAP 0:37

looking at this drive it still looks AMAZINGLY fast compared to now adays. Just back then they sounded better

  • HOLY CRAP 0:37

  • It looks like slick tires to me. Scary and impressive at the same time!

  • Well I read somewhere it was actually rain tires, but you can't really see it on this video. :P

  • or, you could just listen to the commentator announcing at 1:13: "in spite of having deeply grooved rain tyres..."

  • oh, cool, cool, cool...broadside, broadside, broadside:D

  • Wow o.O

    Whats a Lap

    5 ***** and favoritet

  • Stunning control and committment....only Ayrton in my opinion could compete with that. I dont think todays drivers would have big enough nappies......

  • Verstappen could do that in the rain

  • Cool....got footage?

  • @robertrichards777 I'm pretty sure a younger Hans Stuck could. ;) Hell. He could do it at night.

  • one of the best on bord-laps ever been recorded!great sound brilliant driving!

    that was real formula1

  • Que gran piloto

Hoy en día con esas condiciones no saldrían ni a la pista

  • i want to see one of todays drivers do that

  • awesome driving and awesome V8 note

  • Bello!

  • 0:38 HIT THE GAS!!! lol

man, this track isn't wet.........IT'S FLOODED!!! Awesome drivin to keep the car on the track.

  • hear that carbie engine, they were the days! They are trying to make F1 like it next year, no way can you go back to it, unless you go back to carbie engines with H shifters with engines that rev at 8,000 rpm, i.e like the above!

  • They didn't have carbies. This is a cosworth DFV. they were always fuel injected.

  • 3:52 - 4:03

    very very impressive!!!

  • Yep 3:52 onwards is particularly stunning!

  • Compared to the drivers from this era all the current F1 drivers are clowns.

  • Impressive. There must be very difficult to drive a F1 without traction control.

  • a lotta parts of the vid it sounds like the car is trying to kill him

  • Now THAT'S wet!

  • Cosworth engine sound and Murray Walker´s TV commentary!

The god old days of the F1!

  • 3.20 -> 4.40 holy crap

  • This was the very first year at Montreal track and this footage might have been done the Thursday or Friday when rain was still heavy.

Start-Finish line was just after the 'hairpin' turn; even actual starting spot was more like a giant chicane it was not exactly straight. Most changes were done around 1987 when GP was cancelled because of 'brewing' battle between Molson and Labatt for GP sponsorship.

  • 1:08 SHUUUT UUUUUP!!!!!

  • fantastico! Que pilotagem!

    O cara era foda mermo!

  • IF you enjoy racing in thoose conditions you must be crazy.

  • Good old times!

Real Heroes! And machines, not computers!

There we had Talents! Awesome video!

    Thankyou for keeping it!

  • one fo the best driver of all the time
