  • @Eiuvre still keeping fingers crossed, but I committed to going today. :)

  • @H01001000 eh, kinda. Saw the video in my recommendations, accidentally hit "like". :P

  • news video including psn?

  • @skoolsuksok Probably not, sorry. :/ Not really a Linux-related story.

  • Jordan is one of my favorite things on the web. Sorry for the pun. :)

    I knew it.

  • @ReadWriteAccess pun? Are you Thingsontheweb too? I can't remember.

  • @TWILTalks Yep lol

  • as for your travels man, good luck mate ,as for fedora 15,i will wait...lol

  • @sneekylinux thanks. :) If it works out right, I might have a stopover in Londontown on the way there and/or back. :) :) :)

  • I'd like to hear a bit about the peripherals you use - the keyboard like you said, sure, but more impoortantly I'd like to know what MP3 player you use and would recommend for Linux users.

  • @Heisenberg11788 I know when I used linux, I had a Sansa Fuze. I don't know about the Fuze+ but I know the Fuze worked beautifully!

  • @thelimerunner I'm having a terrible time finding an MP3 player that I can mount and drop music on that also works well when plugged into a car stereo. The big issue I have with that is that a lot of them seem to play muted unless also plugged in to the cars power port (or whatever they call the cigarette lighter ports these days). I'll look into the Fuze! Thanks for the recommendation!

  • @Heisenberg11788 Welcome! It's a great player, and I still use it a lot.

  • @Heisenberg11788 Strangely enough, I don't listen to much (if any) music at this point. Weird. It's such a huge part of my life, or used to be, and now I rarely hear any music at all.

When I do listen to music, I sometimes use my phone (Droid X) because it's easy to copy music files over to it (make a Music folder in /sdcard, copy stuff in).

  • Thank you for all the enjyoable quality videos:-)

  • What kind of webcam do you have? I've been looking for a decent one (preferably on the cheaper side).

  • @foxyd3 the webcam behind me is a Microsoft Lifecam Cinema. It does decently, and was about $55 when I bought it. However, the cam I'm using to shoot this video is the Kodak Zi8, which is about $70-80 on sale at OfficeMax. I'm using an external mic (the Rode videomic, about $150) with it, but you could always use a lavalier mic that runs about $25.

  • Also, I think you should go on the trip, it sounds fun :D

  • @r0dnify planning on it!

  • I enjoy watching your twiltalks, but frankly, it's annoying that you begin almost every video by apologizing for not making videos lately. It's one thing if you got off schedule on thisweekinlinux, but this is your off-beat vlog channel so you can make a video whenever you want to.

  • @r0dnify yeah, I know. :/ I'll try not to do that. This channel is supposed to be the behind the scenes, and it's turning into something unexpected, and I'm just not sure how to handle that. :)

  • If jkeyes0 is sad, I is sad :(

  • I know GNOME 3 has a built screen recorder...

  • @CoryClaxon it does, but it's kinda sad. 10-15fps or so, no audio, etc. I might have to use it, but we'll see.

  • Nasal steroids... IF you use it more than 2 weeks, it is not cool. I am telling you, when you stop, it gets worse for me. Just for your knowledge. I wasn't gonna tell since, I think it would effect you psychologically, but...

  • I actually enjoy listening to you talk behind the scenes and about whats going on with your life. It helps explain whats going on with you and what us, viewers are going to expect the next few days. I appreciate you making your videos and sharing information with us, it helps to keep me up-to-date with Linux.

  • Hello Jordan,

Are you going to continue the ssh-tutorial series? If you do, it will be a great help for me...setting up ssh server and all those stuff.

  • I've always seen the copies of WoW behind you on your bookshelf, Do you still play? did you used to run it on Linux?

  • @shaun2312 nope, haven't played in 4+ years now (quit right after Burning Crusade came out). I did run it on Linux briefly though, but I hadn't made my full conversion at home yet, so when I played usually, I was on Win XP. Right after I quit, I switched to Linux full-time (had an ATI graphics card, which had horrible drivers at the time)

  • @TWILTalks

At the time? That's always the case.

Although WoW works amazingly well under wine.

  • @StoneShipman ATI Drivers did improve a lot though! If you install the latest ones (11.3 I believe) I really saw a lot of improvements in graphics performance over the one that comes with Ubuntu 10.04. :P

  • Are you going to do some more stuff on your music channel too? Doesn't matter if you are too busy for that or something, but I am just wondering.. :P

  • @bartjoboy planning to. but I've found out that if I want to continue doing covers, I have to pay licensing fees, so I am going to just have to write my own stuff or possibly do parodies. It's in the long-term plans, but not yet. :)

  • @TWILTalks Alright, sounds nice! :D But really? Licence fees to do a cover on YouTube? What about all those other guys than? There are a lot of them out there that are doing only covers on their channel.. O.o

  • @bartjoboy I don't know, but I talked to partner support, and they said that to cover all bases, I'd have to contact the publisher/writer of the original piece and request a licence. It might be free, but everything I've read says it's not, and I can't get anyone to reply to me... i'd love to be doing music, tbh...

  • @WorldOfANerd sadly, that's probably exactly what they did. :/

of course I've noticed lots of electronics companies charge a ton more for their products in non-US countries.

  • @WorldOfANerd yeah, I know. I was saying it's odd that it's so much more over there.

  • @WorldOfANerd just looked at the German apple store, appears it's 49 euros there too. Very odd.

  • Yes I really loved the Droid X video! The energy drink added to the awesomeness.

Tell you one thing regarding trips: If you visit India, even a year is too short to see all landmarks!

  • @swapniltech ah yes, energy drink, I forgot about that one. :P

I've heard that said about a lot of places, like China. Sadly, if I ever get the chance to come, it would only be for a short time.

  • @TWILTalks talk about that keyboard it may be a apple product but it looks slick :)

  • @saffron99 sounds like a plan. :)

  • @WorldOfANerd ah yes. it was really odd to me that the Apple keyboard was so inexpensive here. Most of the keyboards were at least $50, and it was as well.

  • @WorldOfANerd aw, that's a bummer. :/

Yeah, I bought an Apple wired keyboard. I liked the feel of typing on it, and it was the same price as most of the cheapest ones available at Best Buy. Not moving to Apple/Mac, just a fan of decently-made hardware (notice the Microsoft webcam in the background, hehe)

  • @WorldOfANerd yeah, depending on how things go, I might actually have to fly through Munich to get there/home. :)

Planning to talk about Gnome 3 definitely.

  • Hi, thanks for your help I was able to get my DSC-H10 working. I'm really excited for the unboxing. The best unboxing video was about the Motorola Droid X. And hey this is not a neglected zone! I watch each and every video here. Hey.. psst.. does other side of the planet mean India? or any other Asian country?

  • @swapniltech you liked the Droid X video? Nice! I know a lot of people don't care for unboxings, but I think they're fun and they can be really informative.

Nope, not India, not Asia. It's in Europe.

  • @TWILTalks unboxings are always exciting and nice!

You seem to breathe alot at the beginning of the video, are you feeling okay?

  • @vimmy2492 yeah, I'm fine. Just need to work on my cardio. Generally I find myself running downstairs, setting the lights/camera/mic up quickly, and hitting record. I really need to take 3-4 minutes after that just sitting down to catch my breath before speaking.

  • @swapniltech Hm, perhaps it IS considered a part of Asia. Meh, might as well just say it. I'd be going to Georgia.

  • You should try hardware video capturing. You would need 2 computers though. However it is more reliable. Googling provides more info. Of course if all else fails, point a camera at the screen, the quality won't be even nearly as good as hardware capturing but if it gets the job done it's good enough in my opinion.

  • @woodenotaku I've actually thought about that. The Hauppauge HD-PVR would offer a hardware-based solution, but I don't believe it plays well with Linux. The BlackMagic Intensity would offer a PCI-e option that's natively supported on Linux and would work with the new Kdenlive and HDMI, so that's an option too...

  • i'd enjoy you talking for the whole 15 minutes or more (iirc this channel is also a partner one). it's nice to listen to kind of like a podcast.

  • @bamdadkhan hm, good to know. :) Of course the longer the video, the more editing required, the longer the render, the longer the upload time.

  • @TWILTalks have you thought of not editing the video at all? maybe use one of your neat little portable devices to throw some random stuff up here. e.g. you have a quick idea about something while taking a stroll in the park, you record it and upload it directly. that way you could have more content, and i don't think the subscribers of this channel would mind the occasional loss in quality, mild swearing or some noise.. this is just twil*talks* after all.. i certainly wouldn't. :)

  • @bamdadkhan lol. I actually used to do exactly that, then things got a bit more structured, and moreso, and moreso, hehe.

I'm so confused about the future at this point. I will say, though, this video (at almost 7 minutes long) only took about 5-10 minutes to actually edit, so perhaps I'm moving back in that direction.

  • @TWILTalks yeah, i remember. anyway, it's nice to hear that you're back on track. i like to hear pretty much anything from you, for i consider you sort of a distant friend or relative, but take as much time as you need.

  • @bamdadkhan thanks a lot, man! You and I have been talking for such a long time (comments, IRC/live shows) that I feel the same way. :)

  • @TWILTalks Recycling old Parts...For the WIN!!

  • Hey, don't worry about not doing a video that often here. you do a hell of a lot of hard work on your other channel as well as managing a busy life full of kids and wives and relatives. Don't beat yourself up, you ain't superman.

  • @Iamthemaster2 that's a very good point, I just had a good rhythm going here for a while, and so many things going on got me thrown off entirely. :)

  • @Iamthemaster2 I'm pretty sure its just kid. No "so He only has a mysterious son who he is hiding from us. He is secretly training him in the ways of GNU/Linux and Google foo. His son will come to us in our time of need and free us from a futuristic artificial intelligence that's going to try to take over the world.

  • @soulknifehunter oh no, you've accidentally stumbled upon my super-secret evil plan! Get him, baby Tux!

  • @TWILTalks I knew it! By chance for Halloween do you plan to make him wear a tux costume?

  • Is that an Apple Keyboard in the Background?

  • @crissescore yup.

  • @TWILTalks ....Aint these things more expensive than 10 new normal Keyboards?

I mean they look good and have som nice features but are they worth it?

  • @crissescore not in the slightest. If I wanted a cheapo keyboard from walmart, I could have gotten one cheaper, but I would have done just as well to stick with my loud, cheapo dell USB keyboard that came with my desktop. :P

The Apple keyboard, for me, was very thin, light, and quiet, and typing on it is extremely comfortable, and it was $50, same price as some of the cheapest boards at Best Buy (where I bought it)

  • @TWILTalks Yeah it all comes down to what you want and need from a keyboard

In my case I am pretty much forced to use my laptop keyboard (since my PC broke...) Oh man I only get the stuff that people throw away....but at least I can build my own Rigs.

    Greatings Chris

  • @crissescore sorry to hear that. :/

This is actually the first keyboard I've purchased in probably 6 years. maybe longer. The Dell one came with my desktop, and the one I used before that was an MS keyboard a company I worked for was throwing away. :P

  • Hmn, the way I do my screencasting is record in gtk-recordmydesktop, let it encode to lossless OGG (tick the no compression box in the options) and then use ffmpeg to encode that to h.264/vorbis.

  • @kn100kn100 I used gtk-recordmydesktop for a very long time, but the processing time after recording is finished just got ridiculous, so I moved to ffmpeg/kazam.

Sadly, with Gnome Shell, recordmydesktop doesn't quite work correctly yet (at least not the last time I tried). I seem to remember getting blue boxes/bars or something on the screen.

  • @TWILTalks Hmn, that sucks, I tend to record in one take without any editing, I do wish I could record with ffmpeg/x11cap but I find it seems to record at horrible framerates in comparison to gtk-recordmydesktop, do you find this problem? I can't seem to get more than 10fps out of x11cap

  • @kn100kn100 I wish I could do it all in one take, but I cough a decent amount.

ffmpeg gets me very nice fps, generally. all depends on the command you're using, I think. need to add a "-r 25" to get 25fps (that's in the command I use)

  • wish you to get well my friend

  • nose steroids? no way lol :o

must have been bad. hopefully you get better soon. thankyou for your videos :)

  • @passionfearmisery yeah, it's a generic version of Flonase. The doctor is convinced I have horrible allergies, even though my allergy tests (stick tests, scratch tests, the whole thing) says I'm not.

  • no dislikes : )

  • Hey Jordan... What Country?

  • Cool. Look foreward to your Fedora 15 review

  • cant wait for fedora 15 review !

  • Did you ever sell that laptop on ebay ? lmfao

  • @bradsha212 actually, I did, thanks for asking! The first bidder/buyer didn't pay, never responded at all, but I did a second chance offer for $5 less, and it sold within hours.

  • gnome shell screencapture is not bad at all...have used it a few times and it works better (for me at least) than i thought, so you may like it. i dont think it does any audio tho, so maybe separate audio capture. but yeah.

  • @archlinuxrussian it's not terrible, just a bit slow on framerate (10-15, I think)

  • You go on holiday withoud taking all of your fans with you?

I will put my stuff ready to go on holiday. ;)

Do you do samething with the release of Ubuntu 11.04?

I will run it but in classic because I run now Unity but it still has a lot of bugs and I hate the menu and that you can't change the collor and place of the side bar plus that there are some icons that can't be removed.

I installed AWN to have better acces to some programs and maps.

  • @emiel1976ep if I go on holiday, we all go on holiday. :) the camera always goes with me.

I do intend to do an ubuntu 11.04 "final" review (going over all the changes from 10.10), a Unity video, maybe even a comparison between Unity and Gnome Shell.

  • @TWILTalks :D that is ok.

    That would be nice.

1 day to go till it is there.

  • lol there were points in the video that I thought you were going to tell us something devastating.

  • congraduations on the worktrip/3,000 subs! thats awesome

  • I like how you are always apologizing for rambling on your free form channel. LOL.

  • @Capa359 hehe. I didn't apologize quite so much in this video. I just know it can get frustrating to quickly go from one topic to another with nothing that obviously ties them together.

  • @TWILTalks Well I can relate to that. I like the random bits of info and to hear another's insight . At least you know how to get back on topic. I'm a lost cause. :)

  • @lizardX11 ubuntu 11.04 already damn time flies

  • @willlisawsom 11.04 stands for the release date i.e April 2011, like every ubuntu version. But you are right time flies.

  • Talk about what computer you use these days for editing and what not. I've lost track of what computers you have. It seems like you bought 3 since i started watching you

  • @thejoesteiger I'm actually using the same desktop to edit, for the most part. Inspiron 546. I occasionally use my Vostro laptop, but not often.

  • Tomorrow is going to be the release of Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal :). Can't wait for it seriously.

I wanna check if it still has those flaws.

Well I'll wait for you to review it. so Please do it soon.

    Nice Video :).
