I don't understand what everyone are talking about . I just watched this movie and I really liked it , the tension between the characters . the humor . the endless hints to the past . the look and overall feel of this movie . it looks old . but it's so well edited that it has charm . and the story had a great pace and I liked the whole idea . only near the end I understood the meaning of the title .
And this short? it's redone 1 by 1 in the movie (bedsides the fleet). so give me a break .
If there was anything that disappointed me about this movie it was the absence of the "Flying Legion" that you see at the end of this short. My grandfather in the south of England used to tell stories of watching the B17 bomber fleets flying off to Europe in WWII. He said it was the most awe-inspiring sight and sound to watch cloud after cloud of these huge planes fly overhead.
The picture started as an epic struggle and then turned into a one-horse superhero romp, but it wasn't believable.
I just saw the 1940's Superman cartoon called Mechanical Monsters - I'm sure thats were Kerry got the idea for the robots - very cool! FYI- for a movie made after 2000 its one of the few that my 75 yr father and 9 yr old daughter like and can watch - can't say that too often. PS- the Superman is a Podcast in iTunes
Okay, seriously?? How many ideas do you people think are out there? Chances are that some of them are going to be alike.
That said, this movie could have been great. All the pieces were in place: vision, artistic direction, amazing music... if they only had a good script :( Such a crying shame.
@BleakDisc True, everyone has their own taste. The thing is, it promised to be artistically different from anything we've ever seen. The only thing that was different about it was the first five minuets... or, what we see here in the original short. After that, it became a typical summer flick, which was very disappointing. But, I understand that everyone has different taste, so, to each his own, right ;) ?
I see they brazenly use the title of the Fleischer Superman cartoon"The Mechanical Monsters",which is were the giant robots of the Sky Captain movie come from. The Sky Captain and his flyers are a rip on the Blackhawk comic series.
If you want to talk about ripoff artists, look at George Lucas. Star Wars is a rip of "Galactic Patrol" and the harder you look at each and every one of his movies the more you'll see what a hack he is. He'll steal from anything from a Bruce Lee movie to the Wacky Racers cartoons.
I wasn`t slamming .I enjoyed it .Then I looked for the inspiritation .I believe Lucas has said were he got his from,if he hasn`t then hack is too good for him.he`d be just another Stephen King.
@1acroyear1 Lucas inspiration was Flash Gordon serials. Even the intro, with the text scrolling into the distance is lifted from FG second series. Not to speak the enviroments (Naboo= Alex Raymond´s Mingo City, Hoth=Frigia, Kashyyyk/Endor=Arboria, etc.)
He changed the P-40 type to a Spitfire. That deserves a like.

On second viewing, I get it. The original movie was so retro and misunderstood, how could anyone do it one better. Here we have proof.

This short and the short 9 are my favorite shorts.
Captain Sky reminds me of The Day the Earth Stood Still, being that it stars a robot alien type thing.
I love the way this is shot.

it reminds me of the old 1930's film serials like Flash Gordon

Also, pretty good CGI for 1998. Looks better than the CGI in the 2004 feature film.

I gonna get myself a time machine one of these days and go back to see real sci-fi serials just like this film.
