I hear tell the Navy used 8V71 in some of the swift boats, they ran them without governors. When they went they weren't worth rebuilding they'd pull 'em out, drop the old motor in the river and a new on in the hull
@TheBlazen001 I'm sure anything from Scania or Mercedes-Benz wouldn't last half as long in a runaway scenario. Both produce very good engines, but these old Detroits were nearly indestructible.
nothing to worry about that detroit was no good to begin with my 6-71 went run away for 10 min befor it could be stoped and no damage was done by the way no governor cat stop a detroit it will just run on its own sump oil
Ive seen a detroit in an old grove machine runaway, my dad shut it down by covering the intake then did some more work to it and it fired up and ran lke nothing ever happened. Detroit is the best diesel motor around!
Two things wrong with this picture. Why the hell do that to a perfectly good engine? #2, Are those people suicidal just begging to have the engine fly apart and have something knock their fucking heads right off their shoulders as they're watching it "Melt down"??
Yea its stupid to be standing that close for what they're doing but detroits never really die. i work with them everyday. there tough diesel engines. as long as nothing serious like a rod coming through the side of the block there still good.
the smart person wouldve either cut the fuel off, or blocked the intake and actually fixed it and used it for something. but instead lets just stand back and watch this piece of history run until it kills itself. what a shame
as much as this video makes me sick, one thing is very likley- let it cool down, fill it back up with coolant and oil- bet it fires right up and could be put right back into a rig for 50k more miles!
This isn't nearly as funny when you just bought one and fire it up for the first time, luckily with a quick adjustment she was off to the races again after sitting in storage for 6 years
@darksquirrel122 i se canadians and europeans doing it too. now why they are doign this i dont know. id rather it not happen. somebody somewhere could make use of that engine
Tough old motors! They dont make em like that anymore... Tho it only ran for 50 secs before it blew up these old things would last a lifetime.. I have a 64 chevy with a 3-53 in it that had 350,000 miles when i bought it, it now has 864,000.... Thats gotta tell u something...
Detroits are going towards vanishing heirlooms of nation, but sometimes sacrifices for science are good for us. I keep searching engine blowing videos, because those teach me something that theory can't match... ...and of course because I have built so good engines that none have ever catastropically failed. Have twisted a valve 2 times...
i bet it was just the valves that got smashed, that was a little but to quick of a kill for one of those motors. iv seen them go 5 times longer without oil. just probably messed somthing stupid up
i'm not sure what more retarded, destroying a decent motor for fun, or standing 2meters from it waiting for a bang.
good job is didn't throw a rod, surgeons might have been able to remove the bits of cast iron coated in diesel oil out of people, but the infections would probably kill them.
I've got a short piece of rope and a tall tree for anyone who voluntarily destroys a Detroit Diesel, and a bunch of extra ropes for those standing by and cheering it on.
@AuH2O By the looks of it....it was actually part of a training thing for diesel engine students. You know, test their rebuild skills. That is the ONLY reason anybody should burn up such an engine.
They were cheering before they realized they had to rebuild it.
all those people were absolutely stupid to keep standing there. These motors have one problem: The possibility of runaway. If an injector sticks open....that engine's not stopping until it's flying apart. i take back my last comment if the governor is not set properly they will run away like that only a little more impressive than that but a lot like that
PROTIP: When pointing out somebody's flaws in spelling or grammar, it's generally a wise idea to proofread your own comment so you don't make yourself look like a fucking idiot in front of a potential audience of over 50,000,000 people. ;D
Haha this video is awesome! I've always wanted to do that to a Detroit 2 stroker..they are awesome engines! The camera guy is the only smart guy though standing at a distance to the grenade. The safest place to be in this situation is actually standing on TOP of the engine. It has been proven time and time again that engine parts will NEVER travel upwards when grenading...only down and out. There is a study on this with slow motion cameras done by OSHA.
@akretowicz Exactly. Why destroy a perfectly good engine? It's like those idiots with the motorcycles doing burn outs till their tires pop. Makes no sense at all. Since they can't play with their toys right, someone should take them away till they grow up.
@TheMrBlinx What is this, China? If someone wants to waste something they spent their hard earned money on who are you to tell them not to? Who died and gave you the right to tell others what they can do with their stuff?
@TestECull I have just as much right to post my opinion as you do, asshole. Figure it out, moron. Duhhh. If you can't deal with it, commit suicide, pig (the world would obviously be a better place without you anyway).
@TheMrBlinx Wow, a keyboard warrier, I'm shaking in my boots! Haha. What a piece of work you are. I'm not even going to waste my time proving you to be an idiot, you've done my job for me. I'm just going to sit here and laugh my ass off while you fruitlessly try to insult me.

@akretowicz My thoughts exactly. I can not tell you how many idiots I have seen blowing up good, rebuildable or even rare engines here on Youtube. It's horrible.
Guys, relax, its just an engine and you are all scolding him like he killed a man. Yes it was a very nice engine but its not alive or anything. Just meticulously made and put together pieces of steel and iron; from dirt it came and to dirt it will one day return. Don't get me wrong, I Love engines! especially diesels. But you must admit, it is pretty interesting to see what happens when you over rev them. So lets just all be cool.
@master7chief So you don´t mind taking down worlds last oldest tree cause it´s just a tree? or killing all whales cause their just whales? they came to eart and Y dont mind if they disapear?
Those engines are dying on distinction (or how ever it is written)
@felixchaus Killing all whales, or any animal for that matter, is a bit extreme. Furthermore, a tree cant be replaced or put in a museum but theoretically, this engine could be reproduced. Its not good to be ssoo attached to a physical thing that you take its destruction so personally. *THIS IS TO EVERYONE* Honestly, I appreciate the fact that its an antique, however it can be reproduced. YES, they should have used a different, less important engine, but in the end, what Really matters?
do you fucking realise how rare detroits are nowadays?! fucking idiots i swear to god we need manditory iq tests and anyone thats this stupid needs to be shot in the head
@PukkPukk all the parts are interchangable as long as the piston is the same size not to mention all the engines they made for different applications. most oil rigs use these engines due to the versatility
It shows how dehumanised Americans have become when they pitch a fit about an old engine being tortured, but are quite happy for their government to torture people, even children etc..
They prolly HAD to destroy it. It is (ya i know im gonna get shit for it) an out of date engine. Some trade school was prolly getting rid of it, and they cant sell it, part it out, or any of the sort. They must completely destroy all engine and componants that go with it so they cant be reused. They are donated and can't ever be used for anything except by the school it was donated to unless it was given back to the donor.
the trade school i went to had to (or has already) destroy any donated engines once they are no longer needed. that includes 2 8V71T's a 2-71 gen set and at least one 4-71. i hope they still have a few around to show what diesel was back in the day.
as for these knucklechildren couldn't they have at the very least just drilled a hole through the block and recycled it with some dignity?
@E800FLYER I agree, but to each their own I guess. If it were me teaching, I'd put it on the back 40 of the school and keep it to show future generations.
Why the fuck would you do that? any Idea how long it takes to rebuild an engine? and how intricate the rotating parts are? and the amount of work that goes into their manufacture? Next time if you want to do something "fun", go bash your head up against a wall, then we will all be better off.
it is obvious that non of the people commenting ever worked on gm2 cycle engine. all that was needed was to trip the blower emergency shutdown flap, all the gms 2 cycle engines have one. it shuts off the air to the engine and it stops.
@jjmqwerty well you're mostly correct about the shutdown flaps, but not all of them have them, but you can stuff a board over the intake, or bust open a fuel filter if she's not runnin on her own oil lol :)
Looks to me like a trade school for diesel mechanics. What a better way to learn than to trash a motor (so you know what it takes to do so) and then rebuild it. Someone always has something to cry about these days.
You ppl are junking engines like no tmorro, and im sitting here wishing i had a motor to learn on...very sad. Who the hell thought up this competition and what is the overal point?
@shackwrrr - What do you mean by "running of it's own oil"? Do Detroits have an external oil tank, or cooler or something? Otherwise I thought that whatever is in the block is enough. There ARE liquid cooled though, right? I wonder if they're running any coolant in there at all.
its an engine blow up contest for Skills USA state competition. I was there to listen to that thing scream. Im helping a kid get a 350 cummins ready for it next year. I go to college in Helena MT for Diesel and we are rebuilding N14's. cored the old big cam 400s that they used for years, had a couple 3406 kitties and a Silver 92 detroit. all bye bye
:( can't believe you stood around and watched! Breaks my heart. Kept hoping the video would just end or the motor just keep going to show nothing here to see!:(

It shows how dehumanised Americans have become when they pitch a fit about an old engine being tortured, but are quite happy for their government to torture people, even children etc..
snapdragon69 1 year ago
@snapdragon69 You're an idiot. No -- wait. STFU. Yes, you are. What. Huh? No...don't even argue with me. YOU'RE AN IDIOT. Oh, and you need to relax.
bws1971 1 year ago
They prolly HAD to destroy it. It is (ya i know im gonna get shit for it) an out of date engine. Some trade school was prolly getting rid of it, and they cant sell it, part it out, or any of the sort. They must completely destroy all engine and componants that go with it so they cant be reused. They are donated and can't ever be used for anything except by the school it was donated to unless it was given back to the donor.
outalinecowboy 1 year ago
@outalinecowboy
the trade school i went to had to (or has already) destroy any donated engines once they are no longer needed. that includes 2 8V71T's a 2-71 gen set and at least one 4-71. i hope they still have a few around to show what diesel was back in the day.
as for these knucklechildren couldn't they have at the very least just drilled a hole through the block and recycled it with some dignity?
E800FLYER 1 year ago
@E800FLYER I agree, but to each their own I guess. If it were me teaching, I'd put it on the back 40 of the school and keep it to show future generations.

I think it's a sign of us being totally spoiled that we can do this for entertainment :(
kiminicooper1 1 year ago
Why the fuck would you do that? any Idea how long it takes to rebuild an engine? and how intricate the rotating parts are? and the amount of work that goes into their manufacture? Next time if you want to do something "fun", go bash your head up against a wall, then we will all be better off.

Very Sad to see.
I have about 10 things I could have used that Detroit for.

it is obvious that non of the people commenting ever worked on gm2 cycle engine. all that was needed was to trip the blower emergency shutdown flap, all the gms 2 cycle engines have one. it shuts off the air to the engine and it stops.
jjmqwerty 1 year ago
@jjmqwerty well you're mostly correct about the shutdown flaps, but not all of them have them, but you can stuff a board over the intake, or bust open a fuel filter if she's not runnin on her own oil lol :)

Looks to me like a trade school for diesel mechanics. What a better way to learn than to trash a motor (so you know what it takes to do so) and then rebuild it. Someone always has something to cry about these days.
jgriebel01 1 year ago
Totally worthless. There are dozens of people that would have LOVED that engine for a conversion.

Havre. I was there for this. i can see me :) V.I.C.A

It sounded like it only seized, rebuild it, these engines don't die that easy.

Why do the RPM's bounce like that if there's no limiter or anything? Is the throttle really stuck wide open, or is someone running it?
justforever96 1 year ago
its running off its own oil un metered
shackwrrr 1 year ago
@shackwrrr - What do you mean by "running of it's own oil"? Do Detroits have an external oil tank, or cooler or something? Otherwise I thought that whatever is in the block is enough. There ARE liquid cooled though, right? I wonder if they're running any coolant in there at all.
justforever96 1 year ago
its an engine blow up contest for Skills USA state competition. I was there to listen to that thing scream. Im helping a kid get a 350 cummins ready for it next year. I go to college in Helena MT for Diesel and we are rebuilding N14's. cored the old big cam 400s that they used for years, had a couple 3406 kitties and a Silver 92 detroit. all bye bye
Dodgeram901 1 year ago
:( can't believe you stood around and watched! Breaks my heart. Kept hoping the video would just end or the motor just keep going to show nothing here to see!:(

This death was justifiable because it was probally for some diesel tech class for the students to tear into and rebuild
