Although, in my play-through I didn't know about the lore(HP Lovecraft-ness) behind it and I ended up running through it with Fawkes.

Yeah, kind of takes away the "scary" aspect when you have your 8ft tall super mutant bodyguard with a mini laser-gatling at your side.

I enjoyed Fallout 3, but I really think it could have been better if everything wasn't referential. I had a blast in this building until I realized it was one big Cthulhu reference. When I felt immersed in this post-nuclear world, I'd get ripped out of by a token nerd reference. I'm sure it gets you lots of geek points, but in 60 years when people are replaying Bioshock for its story telling and historical value, kids will miss all of the trendy pop culture references this game is built on.
