I'm modeling a car, would the dielectric material be good for the glass windows, or would suggest a different type of shader? How about standard glass vs tinted?
Oh, man, thanks a lot! I started to learn dielectric material. Your narration just great! I've do all like you said, do some experimentation and just got what I need. Thanks again and cheers from Ukraine :)
I really need to put this shader on a piece of glass in a scene, but I'm getting "Error: Object 'dielectric_material_qualityMenu' not found, when I create the dielectric_material node. Any idea how to fix this? I'm using Maya 2011. Thanks!
@jfesmire Could be a number of things but much to hard for me to pinpoint without seeing the file. Sometimes you need to delete the prior material and then "delete" history by type and then do a save and then reassign the material...other times it's not that easy. Keep trying to troubleshoot....Maya loves a good troubleshooter...Sorry I can't be more help on that one!
@deepfriedectoplasm Thanks for trying! I tried again this morning after rebooting, and voila! No problem. I don't know why it didn't work in the first place, but that's what worked.
Very nice tutorial .... i always messed up with the mental ray properties , which properties to check on and which to not .. this Tutorial helped me alot . And tell me is there any way i can get to know what properties of MR need to check in for Diff diff materials ...:)
@StudioGoldsmith Anytime you want to get an animated sequence out of Maya you will be using the Batch Render to create final output of the image sequence so that you can bring it into After Effects or some other compositing program. I have some tutorials that explain the process more in-depth if you need, just check my main You-Tube channel page and scroll through the list. Hope that helps. Stu
Very cool tutorial. One question though. Say I'm modeling a building and I want to apply the dielectric material to only the windows. Would I just select the faces that make up the windows and apply the material to that? If so, I would have the material of the building and the material of the windows on one object. I'm not sure if that would confuse maya or cause some sort of problem since I haven't actually tried it yet. Please let me know if you can. Thanks!!
hello creator 3d, my name is "hocine" maya2011 I installed and when I finished my animation Mödling and I did not find the render / image format. "EXR" to which I then combine with nuke or composite. I m really think you found the solution and thank you very much. I await your reply thank you
@shadow444555 Go to the Window Menu - Settings/Preferences - Plug-in Manager. You will see a list of all the Plug-ins available to Maya. Scroll down to the "Mayatomr.bundle" and make sure there is a check in the boxes for Loaded and Auto load. Then choose Close to close the window. Now Mental Ray will show up in your render settings window and auto-load when you start the program and it will always be there for you to use! Hope that helps.
This has to be the best thing i've ssen all week. I've been having trouble finding these menu items and couldn't find out how to get them until i looked on here. THANK YOU!!!
Very informative videos keep up the good work. Do you freelance as well? I am actually developing a game right now I am no where near as good as you but I am learning.
@DreamSparksLLC Thank you, I hope you learn lot's of new stuff for making your game! Believe it or not, I have never played a video game, (I know it's lame!) I usually spend all my time learning new stuff about Maya. I am a multimedia specialist and use Maya to help me create stuff for videos and motion graphics for clients and such. No matter how much I learn about Maya it just makes me more aware of how much I don't know about Maya! Study Hard!
@pim7777 Super observation! The clouds were created with a 3D fluid Container and then just sized and positioned and then keframed to move across the scene from left to right. Essentially all you need to do is Create-3D fluid container, and then in the attributes box just look for the presets button and assign a cloud preset. you can animate and change parameters by animating the texture and various other properties. I plan on the next tutorial to show some of this stuff! Stay tuned! STU
Very nice, thank you!

@WizardReel dielectric would be fine, just mess with the transparency and colors for different styles of glass. Hope that helps.

How did you proceed when rendering video with mental ray in Maya? Can it be without using batch render?
