If everyone here would behave naturally we would be also smelling bushes an looking for food, so as many tribes in the rainforest! lol todays Society is totally against nature
@budte Judging by the extreme wagging tail that Uggie usually has, and the fact that he is getting treat rewards, I'd say he very much enjoys doing tricks anyway. Most dogs trained with rewards LOVE doing tricks. If the dog was being forced unwillingly then I'd agree with you though (but I'm sure he still runs around doing natural things as well)
@budte I understand your concerns, Budte, but there are certain dog breeds (border collie etc), and certain dogs, that are very intelligent... and they need some intellectual stimulation every day or they get bored and depressed. If a smart dog enjoys learning projects with its owner, that's great. Training doesn't go all day long anyway. A typical cycle is exercise/running around, then some training, then freetime for hours, and cuddling at the end of the day.
@LoreleiMission I used to earn my living from animal entertainment and I used to try and justify it too. An intelligent dog that is bored or depressed is not being exercised and walked off the lead enough, He/she is not bored because they can't go skateboarding.
@budte "Trick" or not, what's not natural? Most dogs enjoy playing with stuffed toys, old socks, tennis balls, etc - apparently Uggie likes playing with a skateboard. It's pretty obvious he's enjoying himself - he's not jumping off, and he's learned to steer it where he wants to go.
@victim3000 You do not have to reward a dog to play with stuffed toys. old socks or tennis balls. Uggie is performing a task in order to get a treat at the end. You really think Uggie enjoys standing on his hind legs walking backwards? It is for our amusement. I am not saying it is the worst crime, simply that as someone who likes dogs I would prefer to see him running around a park investigating the bushes and smells - ie. behaving naturally.
I LOVE UGGIE!! He was amazing in The Artist! He's amazing here! I want my two pups to learn as much as Uggie has. They're smart guys and VERY cute. Uggie was my favorite part of The Artist.

I like Uggie, but I'd prefer to see him having fun doing natural running around for himself, rather than being manipulated for our amusement.
