Did you know Judy Garland's Father was run out of a town for propositioning a young male usher working for him at the theater.? Saw a photo of Judy's Father, devastatingly handsome with Judy's big dark eyes.
At 2:08, when Michael says there was no Shubert Theatre in Hot Coffee, Mississippi, I always have to smile. I grew up in Mississippi, about ten miles from that very place. The writer of the play, Mart Crowley, is from Mississippi. I truly love this movie. It's the best gay movie of all-time, at least to me.
The fat woman at 4:12 was the legendary Elaine Kaufman (1929-2010), owner of Elaine's Restaurant in an uncredited cameo. The restaurant will close 5-26-11, six months after her death at 81.
I've seen this movie many times but watching Donald come a embrace Michael (4:03) it feels like I'm seeing it for the first time. I wonder what that was like for audiences in 1970 to see this on the big screen in a legitimate movie theater? It's a very beautifully acted scene.
@Ikireson yeah you got to miss that wonderful thing called the AIDS epidemic. trust me if your gay THIS is the best era, If young people choose to be vapid bores with no culture that is their problem. Watching this Movie is a great way out of that vapidity.
that goes to show you how two faced Hollywood is - not one nomination after all these brilliant performances, and this film stopped all their careers...if you are gay in Hollywood you really have to stay in the closet, even marry a woman
It's indeed a shame. Crowley wrote a sequel a few years ago, and it would have been so cool, if the actors were all still alive, to have seen them reprise their roles thirty years later.
Bob Fosse picked Dustin Hoffman over Cliff Gorman for the film version of "Lenny" despite Cliff originating the role on Broadway and getting great reviews.
That's not all that uncommon. Most famously, Angela Lansbury, who'd played Mame on Broadway was overlooked for the film version in favor of Lucille Ball.
Has anyone noticed the picture at 2:19 is of Donald's? I guess it doesn't show here very well, but on the DVD, which is of much much better quality than the VHS, it's clearer...
That wasn't some comparison at all. I just said these archetypal characters are quite the same. And furthermore, I stated the stasis because it seems that the rules for any 'diversity of thought" are more stagnant than before.
These guys are just too much when it comes to talking. These guys could give the fellas on Queer As Folk (US) a thing or two about "chatting". Oh, if you guys want to see an amazing Documentary watch "Paris Is Burning"
You're right but to be Gay during the late 1960's early 1970's must have been a brave thing to do and be. As for the Guys on QAF, I get a kick out of them too. Yet they live life alot fuller and although Brian isn't as bad as Michael was, Michael can't hold a Candle to Brian.
Thanks for your agreed. Yeah, in late 60's to early 70's were about to be First to break "get out of closet" . As QAF were about be more accecpt in social thing. Thaks again for your reply, Iaminage.
I think the time (early 70's) factor made this interesting. I would like to have to seen it made today. I think it would be different and the same in some aspects.
Alan is so stupid and annoying. You never call a person at the last minute on Saturday Night, and you never try to "Invite" yourself to the party of someone that you don't even know.
Michael, for all his airs, pronounces "Vicuña" wrong. He says "vi-kyoo-na". It's pronounced "vi-koo-nya".

@PeterFormaini No! It is the phone # of an organization that can help you get out of homosexuality!

@Bestmanme08 I routinely cruise such groups. Get more sex partners than in the busiest gay bar!!
Actually, I have probably converted more 'straight' men in my life than all such groups have failed to convert. :D :D

Man, looking at this movie that is near 40 years old is severe evidence that the gay man has not evolved. Only the laws have changed.

Not sure what your point is. What great evolutionary strides have straight men made in the last 40 years?
