If you keep listening, he implies that there are psychopathic/angry/violent people all over the world, including in the US. This is unfortunately no different in the Muslim world. Again, the point is that when people are troubled, we justify ourselves based on what we believe in, even if we are contradicting our own beliefs. Similarly, if you watch American news and the speeches leaders give, Americans are often convinced to agree with a war based on what we value, namely "democracy" and "freedom".
The host, who seemed unprepared, suggested that there aren't many Christians who commit violent acts (she named suicide bombers). However, she's wrong. Historically there have been, but that is a different scenario. Even now, there are people of other religions who are involved in violence. Hamza Yusuf was merely suggesting that because these people might not be devoutly religious, they find other excuses for their actions. As a result, their religion/philosophy gets no bad name.
In the end, people WILL find justifications for their actions. As the Shaykh points out, acts such as these are "human problems". Blaming one religion, religion as a whole, or any ideology for the continued propagation of violence suggests a prejudiced view. Moreover, its an extremely naive view of one of the major problems that human existence presents.

Historically there have been, but that is a different scenario. Even now, there are people of other religions who are involved in violence. Hamza Yusuf was merely suggesting that because these people might not be devoutly religious, they find other excuses for their actions. As a result, their religion/philosophy gets no bad name.

In the end, people WILL find justifications for their actions. As the Shaykh points out, acts such as these are "human problems". Blaming one religion, religion as a whole, or any ideology for the continued propagation of violence suggests a prejudiced view. Moreover, its an extremely naive view of one of the major problems that human existence presents.

Remember, people in the West do not know much about Islam, and when we see pictures of Moslems, they are carrying placards with slogans like 'Behead those who insult Islam'.
