I love this scene. It may be a "blonde" line, but it does have its own loopy logic. Marilyn was no dummy. Watch her between her lines ... she doesn't just sit there waiting for her next line, she listens and reacts exactly as her character, Claudia Casswell, would, which is the essence of acting. She knew exactly what she was doing (and so did Claudia Casswell). And I love her looks in this scene ... she looks both adorable and truly elegant.
Marilyn Monroe is and will always be The Greatest Star. In her short career
1952-1962 she became more than a super star, she became a myth. All About Eve, , Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How To Marry A Millionaire, , Some Like It Hot, Misfts and her last Somethings Got To Give reflect a great actress. Billy Wilder who directed MM in Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot said she was second only to Garbo in ability. In her great career MM worked with Huston, Stanwyck, Colbert, Davis, Lemmon,Gable
@MsMonroe03 Absolutely! And someone has to be a very good actor to pull it off so well. THAT is a really great scene. I laugh everytime I see it. (And that was obviously the intention.)
@mohamed555 "that man" as you called him was the great George Sanders, an amazing actor in his own right, do a search on his movies, you won't be disappointed.
She's still beautiful nowadays (for her age), but, of course, her repeating ... how shal i put it... bumps with the law, culminating with the recent debacle, rather taint her public image. :(
I Believe Marilyn Learned A Great Deal From Bette Although This Was Indeed Bette's Picture You Must Be Dumb Def And Blind Not To Notice Marilyn But Then Not All Have Such Refined Tastes As We Splendid Folk
@lordalessan Ironic in this film ("All About Eve") about younger actresses superseding prior older ones . . . that it should introduce Marilyn Monroe and thus further brighten the dawn of her fast faming film career . . . as Bette's career (as a romantic lead) peaks, thence to decline.
I agree. As much as I love Marilyn, this was definitely Bette's picture. Even if Marilyn wasn't in the film, I'd still enjoy it based on Bette's performance and the story line.
i think that is a disgusting thing to say. this film is remembered for the amazing performance of bette davis and anne baxter.
now i love marilyn as much as the next gay, but really, any pretty young actress could have played that small role (possibly even some who could have played it better)
i love the scene where bette greets addison, and miss caswell at the stairs,,,watch how marilyn studies bette as they playthis scene out...the newbie learning from the master. i always wonder what was going thru Marilyns head while they played this scene.
it's surprising, MM did not get the main part;
flaminia5 8 months ago
@flaminia5 This film was about an actress who was getting old thus MM could not do it but it was one of Bette Davis' best movies!

@shealways: why do people always confuse art with real life? She's playing a role. It's called acting, my dear.

honestly
in my opinion marilyn is just not a very good actress
im sure she did an exceptional job in some movies but shes nowhere near, bette davis, joan crawford, elizabeth taylor etc.

Marilyn made news again today - some video footage of her smoking made headlines.... that's a real star.

btw Marilyn Monroe's birth year brought several stars into the world, like for instance also the year 1899
