The biggest shocker as a fan 8 years ago was discovering that James masters was not English, Apparently even members of the crew on set where even fooled by his impressive accent.

If I heard correctly Joss Whedon got the inspiration for Spike from Sid Vicious of the sex pistols, The Drusilla character was originally supposed to be a blond like Nancy but they swapped hair colors.
