But they are not the most "giving respect to other ppl in the world." They do not recognize their own failings (see Armenia, ca. 1915), and their pride sometimes gets in the way of seeing the value in other cultures.
@ioan01 dude, that was an early-modern tradition in whole of the europe. for example when the austrians took budapest back from the ottomans they did the same. when the latin empire conqured the constantinople in the 13th century same stuff happened. read some history first than make comments.

I strongly suggest mazower and adanİr, you can find their books on gigapedia.

There wasn't a norm that was dictating "you should plunder every city after you conquer it", but martial laws of the 15th-early 18th centuries was allowing armies to do so. May be it was a dark time for the balkan villagers because of heavy tax burdens, but since the ottomans created nice trading networks, the merchants and tradesman were pretty happy.

@1fightforright23 The founders of the Ottaman empire were Turkish tribes from modern Mongolia, they were steppe nomads that were culturally and philosophically like the Mongols, that is one explanation of their open minded approach to other ethnic and cultural groups. But as they settle in the Middle East they got assimilated into the areas they conquered and suffered the same faith the Mongols did centuries before.

Now that is meritocracy. And many families bribed the officials to include their children. On the second note, Janissaries were not the only part of the army. It takes time to grasp the reality even if you try it because we are conditioned to be proud of us exclude the outsiders.

But they are not the most "giving respect to other ppl in the world." They do not recognize their own failings (see Armenia, ca. 1915), and their pride sometimes gets in the way of seeing the value in other cultures.

@ioan01 norms and laws are pretty different things. a law should come from a norm but sometimes laws are not pretty coherent with the norms. There wasn't a norm that was dictating "you should plunder every city after you conquer it", but martial laws of the 15th-early 18th centuries was allowing armies to do so. May be it was a dark time for the balkan villagers because of heavy tax burdens, but since the ottomans created nice trading networks, the merchants and tradesman were pretty happy.

The so called "Osman" name was not even Turkic, the real name of the founder of that empire was ATAMAN, the westerners called him Ottoman, but the stupid Arabs didn't have any civilization that's why they decided to steal and name it as "Osmanli" an arab name, IT IS IN REALITY ATAMAN form TURKOMAN.

@sercone01 nassi 3 sene ya? biz ilkokuldan universiteye kadar gorduk osmanliyi, ne 3 senesi? her sene ayni terane farkli basimevi farkli ihale, kim iktidardaysa onun yandasina giden paralar...Ogrencilere de osmanlidan masallar..Kusturuncaya kadar da, ustelik son derece heyecansiz, detaysiz ve tekduze -surada su savas oldu, su tarihte oldu,sunlar arasinda oldu-seklinde tarih ogretilmez ki! Icine savas detaylari ekle,ogrenci kafasinda canlandirabilsin, yoksa kim sever mercidabik savasini!..

Ottomns saw themselves as a source of unification of all cultures!!! So why are turkish now so narrow minded? I think that what happens in the past should not matter right now I think it is time that man must take action. 1) master your own traditions 2) take all the best parts of all cultures and make your own perfect way of life. I myself am turkish cypriot and luv all cultures.

@1fightforright23 The founders of the Ottaman empire were Turkish tribes from modern Mongolia, they were steppe nomads that were culturally and philosophically like the Mongols, that is one explanation of their open minded approach to other ethnic and cultural groups. But as they settle in the Middle East they got assimilated into the areas they conquered and suffered the same faith the Mongols did centuries before.

@munguntulga Turks never asimilated by another culture in history. We have same religion with arabs but thats all. no another thing. You should come and see in Turkey to understand this.

@oweaick First of all original Turks are not from Turkey, they never lived there before Chinggis Khan. Turks were nomads who were shamanists and a few muslims, but now they worship islam and some chirstianity. Many Turks are either greek or arab oriented now. Look it up, the Turk history is more diverse than you have been led to believe.
