Why do you think we live in a democracy? We live in a democratic republic where there are certain rights to the people (as in the Bill of Rights). When was the last time there was a major third party candidate who was able to activley participate in our election cycle? When was the last time you had more than two candidates up on stage debating? You never see the two debate Nader or the Libertarian Party or the Socialist Party candidates.
