  • Where did you find this subbed version?

  • Maybe the US Military fighter jets will reference this in real-life when the US Will Go Into Battle against Iran!

  • I grew up watching Robotech, and I still enjoy it. I've never seen this movie until today, and I love it :). Cool plot twist/new uniforms

  • could you enjoy your favorite music if sung by someone who didn't understand what that song was suppose to convey to you??

  • unfotunatly i havent seen the original macross series, iv only seen macross zero and macross frontier so im a little confused..

why are there civilians, cars and city scapes on board a military warship???

  • @StevoE26 The crew of the SDF-1 executed a space fold roughly 1/2 mile above an island on which was a city. The space fold carried the SDF-1 and a major portion of the city and it's populace out to Pluto(?). So to save the citizens and preserve as much resources as possible the city was rebuilt within the ship. Actually a brilliant idea for deep space voyages, help relieve stress and keep morale high.

  • @octanehammer thats a better explanation than i was hoping for!

n yeh that does make sence i suppose, soldiers would fight harder if its theyre familys and homes theyre protecting and not just a warship

do you know anywhere i could get the original macross, i cant find it on amazon or ebay :(

  • @StevoE26 I know I am gonna catch grief for this, but try Robotech dot com. They offer Macross. Also try your local video shops. Amazon and E-bay are horrid for finding niche programs. I also know a certain bit torrent site where a 90 gig collection of Macross is offered. Including a remastered DYRL, which has yet to see a North American release. Something I drooled over. As I watch DYRL almost weekly. If you contact me at octanehammer on yahoo, I can get you the link for the torrent.

  • @StevoE26 That is if you are that morally corrupt, as I am. Hey, you do what you can to legally obtain a remastered movie that hasn't been released in the States yet. Stupid marketers. Why would you say, no I don't wanna open my product to millions of potential buyers, I don't wanna make money. ??? WTF? Also do a Google search for alternative retailers for Macross. Imagine my hell trying to buy Yamato toys that aren't offered in U.S. stores. Like the 1/2000th scale SDF-1 for instance.

  • @StevoE26 do a favour to youself and see super dimensional fortress macross, with JAPANESE voice. the feeling is much different, trust me.

  • whats the song playing at 3:25? its so epic!

  • macross? robotech? wikipedia is your friend stupid people...if you don't have a good memory, read and read!!!!

  • This was too cool for words. I'll admit I grew up with Robotech and it will always have a nostalgic place in my heart, but ANYONE can see that Macross is FAR, FAR SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE!! This is my first time seeing this!!

  • This was made 27 years ago, people. WOW.

  • DYRL is the definition of what 80s anime meant to people, for many of us its what anime means, the character designs you used to see everywhere, Megazone, Orguss, Salamander, are now "dated" and no where to be found in favor creepy moe girls. The Characters were so realistic its like we knew them personally, the story still holds up higher then modern anime, and the showstopping number in the end of the movie has yet to be topped. Macross is more than anime, its the holey grail.

  • Modern anime sure has lost this kind of superior animation quality...such a waste, everything is CG these days.

  • I loved DYRL and the original Macross. Though I need to ask if anyone knows the name of the song that starts playing after the scene in 6:41 . it's been driving me up the wall

  • 2:57 To action

  • 6:50 The music is just evil and by evil I mean WONDERFUL!!!

  • Shut up about the robotech vs. macross thing!

  • Hayao has a Z on his glowin' orb, thing...

  • See people, jasonmathias is your typical example of the perfect robocrap moron saying nonsenses like "robocrap has a better stoty". If that theory is true, why roboturd has so many plot holes and nonsenses (ship being destroyed off screen when the animaton does not support that fact, flowers powering mechas,) ? Macross is free of these problems proving how Macross is indeed superior to roboass. jasonmathias did not bring a SINGLE argument to back up his shitty opinion. That fucker is in limbo.

  • this anime is superior and has a fenomenal soundtrack from another galaxy.

  • I don't know why we all argue I think that they're both really good shows and honestly there isn't much of a difference.

  • 6:23 - I'm not gonna take orders from a woman! Make me a sammich', I'm coming in!

  • they don't draw them like they used to

  • If men and women in the same place is so horrifying lets see them find out the things they do together....

    Great video anyways!

  • @MrYourmom911

...fight each other and get divorc--oh, wait...you probably meant sex

  • @personM4N lol yeah. They'd go outta there minds if they saw that

  • This is why anime backed then like these are drawly great, gotta appreciate the art from the past!!!

  • the best part of the opening is when the Macross appears from the shadows

  • Does anyone know the name of the song or theme at 2:59 - I love those horns... uber battle music

  • @Zen0Ph0bus There is no mention of this song in the Macross: The Complete soundtrack. Only the following track (where the Zentradi soldier says "This is horrifying") called "All Out Attack" is present...

  • @drkshad0 thanks for taking the time to reply, yeah I checked the soundtrack and couldn't seem to find it either, I'll have to check out the track you just mentioned... thanks again.

  • Back in 1984 this movie was light years ahead of it's time.

    Nuff said!!

  • 1:00 Amazing intro. Now I want this for 3D. Hell with Avatar.

  • That's the best anime movie I've ever seen.

  • You mis-spelled "Kakizaki" in your tags.

Also, the Macross has "ARMD" carriers attached to it, not "RMD."

  • GREAT GREAT MOVIE :)

  • What's with all the English intertwined with the Japanese? Seems like it would be hard to understand for a Japanese person who doesn't speak English.

  • @Sin526

It's purely for aesthetics. Besides the U.N. Spacy is multinational, so it's expected.

  • @Sin526 Because in Japan, they think English sounds cool.

  • @Sin526 I think it's a nice touch. As the others said, UN Spacy is a multinational organization so I guess they use English as a standard language.

  • Owned.

  • rest in peace Kazuhiko Kato

  • How can this be a DBZ ripoff if it came out before that series even started. I guess they had a time machine.

  • F Yeah! Max to the rescue!

  • 4:32 - 4:42 fucking goosebumps lol.

  • What is the name of the first battle song? I tried so-o hard to look for it around the net.

  • try search "Macross Fate's Arrow"

  • I really like the heavy cannon "Monster", so powerful.

  • Roy Focker is a bad#%& ace pilot, don't mess with him in a dogfight or he'll shoot you down too! lol Hikaru is funny when he panics or goes nervous.

  • what is the name of the enemy?

  • Zentradi in MACROSS. Do not confuse Zentradi with ZentraEdi because ZentraEdi is the enemy name in that crappy ripoff called robotech (aka robocrap or roboshit) because MACROSS and roboturd have nothing do with each ohter.

  • On a separate note, I need to learn Zentran. All I need is the grammar down, and I can use the online dictionary.

  • is it me or are the combat sounds the same as mobile Suit Gundam?

  • Same sound bank!

  • Man, The secondary defense force took a whipping, They were getting blown to pieces...max has mad skills he pulled a guy out of his battle suit in the middle of taking down 3 dudes..that is Skill

  • Well Max was the best Macross pilot pretty much ever. He's the only one who had ever changed into a Zentradi uniform over his Valkyrie. It was an extension of himself.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, that Max Sterling is a pretty cool guy. He changes his VT into Zentraedi uniform and doesn't afraid of anything.

  • Awesome! This is my favorite movie ever!

  • Oh man....I think this is my favorite movie. THIS is what turned me away from Robotech onto Macross.

The opening, the MUSIC, the combat, the characterizations...

And this translation is better than the one on my DVD!

  • Couldn't agree more. Macross music has a dramatic feeling. While robotech is just a robot show for kids. (or retarded adults)

  • You know, there's something to be said for mature discourse.

You don't need to resort to such nasty names over such a frivilous difference.

  • @CaptainJoystick

You have to be living in your parents basement to be watching robotech. And you know its true.

  • well actually robotech music has the same feel of macross just different tone plus robotech and macross are both equaly amazing i dont see the need to hate on robotech.

  • @009FGH Though this is the Macross Movie, not the regular series. First part of robotech is macross, and the other two series are just good on their own, but Macross is on another level as we all know.

  • @009FGH NNaaawwww Robotech had a much better story line. The Sentinels Ruled.

  • @009FGH But plot wise they are basically the same. The same characters die in both. The same characters fall in love in both. Aliens invade and attack in both shows. The core events are the same. Robotech is good if you don't really feel like 'reading' a show.

  • @009FGH

Macross is undoubly superior but theres no reason to go insulting the fans of Robotech just to make yourself feal superior.

  • @TeamTowers1 but Robotech fans are so dumb, they deserve to be insulted.

  • @RebelAdmiral

So acording to you there dumb because they like robotech. Never mind that being dumb isnt a good reason to insult someone.

Your insulting them just to make your insulting them to make yourself feel superior.

Sorry to burst your bubble but someones taste in anime is the last thing to judge someone by.

  • @009FGH No doubt, man. Macross (especially DYRL) is totally amazing. Robotech is a mutated, bastardizied p.o.s.

  • robotech was good, but macross was far superior.

  • @tmoore2010 Robotech came from Macross. they just edited it with two different shows and changed the names. Macross was called the "Macross saga" Hikaro became "Rick Hunter" Nysa Hyasi was "Lisa Sterling" etc. Then the next generation was actually "Superdimmensional Souhtern Cross" a different show altogther along with Mossepeidia aka "The Robotech masters Invid"

  • @tmoore2010 Thank you! at least this guy knows whats up, robotech was cool but like tmoore said macross was the shit

  • @tmoore2010 I CONCUR!

  • do you remember love?

  • It must have been amazing to have seen this in the theater. Especially the very first scene with the dramatic opening.

  • I like the English dub. It's so bad, it's good.

  • As awesome as DYRL is, I have a hard time believing Warera, Loli, and Konda looked like ogres or golems. How could they have possibly blended in if they did?

And Earth was not a threat or a very important target in 2009, so it makes no sense that the Zentradi would attack it. But big motion picture companies like to change stories to make them more extreme and exciting.

  • You see that guy get stoved in? That was sick!

  • Favorite anime movie ever made! Kicks so much ass.

If anyone could help me? At 4:16, I totally need that song.

  • Track 11 of Disc 1 of "Macross: The Complete Soundtrack OST"

  • I notice the opening theme is a variation of the original Macross' opening theme. Do you know the name of that track as well? I must find it!!!

  • Nope, sorry. I only know track 11 because it's my favorite from the original Macross ost.

  • You can try "Macross The Complete" Disc 2 track 1, title is "Everlasting Love - Prologue"

  • The best anime ever! continue culturing!

  • hey guess what this movie has a beautiful message for human kind. I guess it's the best anime movie ever.

  • Don't they have frikkin alarms installed incase those aliens decide waltz around inside macross?

  • by that time they already ordered the civilians to take shelter for the transformation of the ship

  • Well, at least we know one of the shelters ain't nuclear-proof as we've seen with one of those big fat asses.

Forget what I said about the alarms. They're too large to ignore anyway.

  • EPIC. Love this movie. Thanks for posting this clip.

  • I always get a smile when the music at 4:16 plays

  • 6:52 is just as awesome

  • The music at 1:34 always puts a smile on my face.

But then again Macross music has ALWAYS been superb.

  • 1:34 is the best part of this movie. They need a High Def version of it. I could play it 100 times loud, and still get a kick out of it every time.

    Genius on the Japanese's part.

  • Yeah true. I need to buy the DVD. I don't find it :(

  • (´・ω・`) i 've heard that a fictitious language

  • Zentra/Meltrandi! O_o

  • deculcha

  • Isnt it weird that the SDF-1's emergancy information voice is in english? Maybe since it was an alien ship they thought to have a foreign language? IDK, <3 dyrl.

  • (´・ω・`)

7:14 lines"Men & women!" by Kent Gilbert ;American

  • Heh even though Zentadi is a fake language, it sounds more "natural" when the Japanese speak it, he sounds like a foreigner speaking it.

  • i want to have the soundtrack of macros dyrl but i dont know how to get it.. somobody can tell me please where do i have to search?

  • All bickering aside, where the hell can I pick up DYRL on dvd? I don't care about region codes. I'm just sick of watching my dated ass copy of "Clash of the Bionoids".

  • Yeah, I can understand that. Unfortunately, aside from the Internet, I'm not sure.

  • I only just noticed that if you look closely at the armored battloid defending Macross, it has the same paintjob as Hikaru Ichijo's/Rick Hunter's from the original anime!

White paintjob, red stripe (s) under the extra armor.

Also, it's a VF-1J. I think it's the only one in the movie...

  • Battroid, not battloid and Hikaru Ichijo, not Rick Hunter.

  • Point taken.

  • Beautifully rendered Anime without a shred of CG. Those were the days.

    Great memories.

  • The description of DYRL being "historical fiction" was right on the mark, and it's a very clever way to allow you to compact or change the storyline. That way we can interpret stuff like the different uniforms (new pilot jumpsuits and spacesuits compared to the TV series) as being akin to the "modern" filmmakers taking "artistic license" - as well as putting Hikaru into Skull Squadron "early" (as, of course, he was flight leader of Vermillion Squadron for a while in the real course of events.)

  • maybe in your view the tv series is real story line but it actually wasnt, check wikipediea

  • No. DYRL was, within the Macross universe, a

"movie" made about the events of Space War 1 during, I think, an anniversary of the war. The original Super Dimensional Fortress TV show - note, Japanese Macross TV show, NOT Robotech - and its events and artistic depictions (i.e. the way the uniforms looked, Max never becoming blown-up into Zentraedi size) was what "really happened" in the year 2009, while DYRL was an artistic interpretation of those events. I'm sorry for any confusion.

  • No, I'm a fan of the Japanese and the American redub.I know the difference, I was commenting about the mess up in marketing and the piss poor editing.

  • Actually, it was "retconned" (I hate that term, but it's useful) into a fictional film within the Macross universe in the 90's.

  • yes they do, saint seiya ovas 26 and 27 are on the air, and evangelion was quite good also. There are a lot of good animes out there

  • but Macross was all hand-drawn with no help from computer graphic

  • Great scene, great soundtrack. Still gives me goosebumps after 20 years~

  • They do NOT make movies this grand anymore.

  • Will this incredible movie ever be on DVD?

  • Not in USA. The rights to the Macross series are in a convuleted mess. Studio Nue revoked the distribution deal with Harmony Gold/Tatsunoko, thus Harmony Gold will not release any new Macross products. Nor will they allow anyone else to, as they copyrighted the name Macross in the United States.

  • Its not as cut and dry as that, though. AnimeEigo wants to put it out, last I heard (they put out the SDF Macross subtitled boxset back in '01), and Harmony Gold has ties with ADV and would probably let them do it. Its that whole Big West/Studio Nuer vs Tatsunoko (and therefore, Harmony Gold) thing that caused all the problems. Tatsunoko had worldwide rights, which they gave the US rights to HG, who barred merchandise from being sold here without going through them.

  • "Harmony Gold copyrighted the name Macross in the United States" is what I meant to say.

  • So this could mean that this movie, Zero and Frontier will be potentially stuck in Japan? That really sucks. Even so, how did Plus and 2 get past them?

  • Macross Plus got through because HG didnt copyright Macross till 2004. I dont know about Macross II though.

  • Technically this movie did get through as a butchered dub called "Clash of the Bionoids." I don't recommend seeing it.

  • I have it and they butchered it so bad that the story line is incoherent. But the artwork is still nice to look at.

  • Yea I got it too and the accents are deplorable the story is chopped and screwed and what totally didn't make sense what the Max and Miriya stuff. i need to watch the real version. But yeah the animation is like watching a good quality episode of the Macross Saga. Even Minmei lips and body move with the words. lol.

  • the moive is made from orginal story line, the 3 series tv show was mixed up by 3 different cartoons to suit import law at that time need over 100 series.....sadly macross is only the 1st part of that long series tv cartoon

  • That's Robotech you are talking about. I was referring to the original Super Dimensional Fortress Macross television series that led to the DYRL movie.

I would let you know that I am actually NOT fond of Robotech at all - I am more of a Macross purist.

  • I know the differences of Macross, Southern Cross ,Mospeada and Robotech and what they did, I was just sayin I own Clash of the Bionoids and how horribly edited it was but the animation was refreshing to see considering all I had seen to that point was Robotech animation. I could never shun Robotech though cause that's an example of Americans americanizing stuff and I grew up on it.

  • Maybe. I was first introduced to it as well, but after I discovered the original Macross I became a Macross purist. However, if you do think of Robotech as something entirely separate, it's certainly not bad at all.

And as for Clash of the Bionoids... wow, I am glad I have never seen it! I am going take your word for it about how bad it is.

  • If it wasn't for Robotech, I personally would have never known about Macross, and in fact would probably not be an anime fan right now. So I have to give it props there. However I am disgusted by the way it was handled in transition. The original Macross was superior.

  • Yeah... you know, you almost took the words right out of my mouth - I'm much the same as you. Robotech helped to introduce me to anime as a whole, but it just wasn't handled too well... but I guess that's what happens when you have to take 3 completely disparate series and make a new mythos out of it.

  • Yeah I know.

  • There was also the really bad Aussie dub of it. Or Singaporean. I forget what the origin was, but it was unedited and released in the Japanese market.

  • The legal fight was, to my knowledge, more about toys and stuff not being properly licensed before being sold in the states. And since Big West lost part of the legal battle, the companies hate each other and there's a roadblock on future Macross DVD releases. HG has made it clear they would put out Macross stuff through ADV if they could.

  • you can buy the dvd online just google it :P

  • I got this movie when i was about 12. Still i hold this movie very sacred and close to my heart. It's a masterpiece.

  • yup! it is! a pure magic of a fine era! the 1980's

  • i still love movie!!

movie director was 24 years old

also art director was 24 years old

    I cant believe yet!

    Its still so bright

  • Hot damn I... I forgot the quality....

Shinichiro Watanabe may have been just an art director for Marcoss but he's a genius... this si so beautifullll

  • Shinichiro Watanabe co-directed Macross Plus, not Macross tv series or Macross: Do you remember love? movie.

  • I need a Super Dimention Fortress... and onnadem VF-25s

  • Great scene

  • this is a great movie

  • I was trying to say that american, in science-fiction, they prefer building a giant ´mech who is a personification of their war and weapons passion. ( A massive walker vehicle with no human appearance, no arms or head, just rocket and missile launcher tied in the chassis, and machine guns and lasers on the armored hull). by the contrary japanese ppl prefer robots who ressemble their "warrior" and martial arts heritage. so they build `mechs who appear like humans as possible.

  • I agree. I am writing a sci-fi based around the principles of japanese mecha anime and many successful ideas such as massive fleet battles, fighters that look like fighters, a battleship that looks like a battleship.

I.E., Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Space Battleship Yamato, Mobile Suit Gundam.

  • Battlestar Galactica?

  • Well, those were like one battleship vs an entire fleet. Although, some of the fighter techniques I am borrowing.

  • Those were the good ol' days, when they were allowed to show people getting shot in the face in anime. You should also show the scene where they escape from the Zentradi ship.

  • I wonder how the original zentradi reacted when they sawe how they were portrayed.

BTW in the macross universe this movie exists and is an adaption of the first space war.

It was only referenced in macross 7 though.

  • "It was only referenced in macross 7 though."

False. Watch the first minutes of the new Macross show, Macross Frontier. DYRL is mentioned.

  • Even though i've seen this a million times I still hold my breath during that first barrage.

  • so do i but i laugh when the little girl gets it

  • BG music is incredibly good! nice!

  • What's up with the english?

  • the way max puts the shit on the zentreadi is awesome.

  • Hah, you tell Hikaru, Misa!

  • My only advice is to check your spelling. Everything else is right on target!

  • Cool

  • excuse me where I do sign up to fly the plane?

  • Macross FTW!!

  • In Science-fiction, Japan borned to make robots, USA borned to make Heavy Mechs with Lasers and cannons instead of arms. USA tryed to make cool robots too but failed, they still cant reach Japanese robots knees, But a good effort on USA robot design was no doubt "Transformers", a really good effort

  • Sorry, but Transformers was still based on original Japanese robot designs, so the criticism still holds that "USA tried to make cool robots but failed; they still can't reach Japanese robots' knees."

If, on the other hand, you're referring to the 2007 Transformers Movie then the criticism STILL holds because the robots in the film were indeed wholly US-designed but met with mixed reviews. (Although, personally, I like them).

  • They did well with Beast Wars though.
