  • "EF 500MM F4 L IS USM"?

Looks like an RPG7 from up an AH-64 gunship I say.

  • You will never be able to afford a EF 500MM F/4 L IS USM.

  • im liking the music

  • These are the top-end professional lenses they make in low quantities and retail for thousands of pounds and so hand building make seconimic sense. I'd like to see how they make the"professional" lenses I use which retail for a few hundred

  • "As the lenses are directly incorporated deep into the front barrel, i high degree of technical skill is required"

...And you're describing screwing something in here?

  • It's impressive as to how these are built... Wow!

  • only in japan

  • whow, now I appreciate my lenses even even more, the high price is justified. Thanks for the video

  • Watch at 3:23, its a spec of dust floating around!

  • @halo3guyy It's glare from the lamp

  • @Calvinkoolz it doesn't look like it to me

  • Watch at 3:23, its a spec of dust floating around!

  • He's touching those lenses and he's got chocolate all over his fingers.

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How far we've come since Galileo. Man would he ever be impressed if he could see this stuff.

  • Thank you for providing this information. I love cameras. But, I never knew how the lens were made. Thank you!!!

  • O M G!!!!! that surely is a fucking great photo machine!!! I am braging about having a pentax 12.1 Megapixel camera and i think i should stop now I' ve seen that.. yiiiii!!!!!

  • Now i know why i can`t afford one...Hmmmf..!

  • Imagine what goes into making the Canon EF 1200mm L F5.6 Lens!!!

  • Exactly the same but only larger in scale!!

And then the cost of money too,.......

The 1200mm L F5,6 is on my to buy list and the the F2,8 and then the.........

Yeh Yeh, but the 17-40mm L F4 and the 70-200mm F2.8 IS can do the SAME job on a shorter distance of 15meters though.........

  • @HDCAMAN "and now we are going to show you the making of the flourite elements. please wait 4 years and keep on watching this video as crystals slowly groooww...."

  • Just don,t drop it !

  • i have 50D :) i love it :)

  • I love canon...

  • That sure is a big (and expensive) L telephoto.

  • The canon lenses are good prices. If you really think these lenses are expensive, maybe you should look at prices for the lowest level leica lenses new, or maybe some Professional video lenses for Arri cameras... A little CANON or Zeiss Glass will put you back tens of thousands if you're finding excellent deals. Carl Zeiss has some primes for 30KL a piece. And both Canon and Carl Zeiss have zooming lenses around 100K. L lenses for a few thousand isn't as bad as people make it sound.

  • Exactly what canon lenses are inferior to the nikkor lenses? The 85mm f1.2? Or was it the 135mm f/2? I don't remember nikon ever making lenses as perfect as either... at least not in their SLRs. Sure they make extremely high resolution lenses for commercial use, but even then, they don't include that technology into their SLR lenses. If you want to talk about SLR lens quality, it's pretty much Contax/Carl Zeiss or Canon. They've put many millions more into research then Nikon ever will.

  • I do like canon lenses, but nikon is right on target as well! I do like 135 f/2 and the amazing 85mm f1.2 but nikon has put the amazing 200-400 f4 lens and all the tilt and shift line! Both companies deliver best =D

  • People who diss the L-series range usually never compared them to other lenses. I went from Tamron to Canon 24-105mm L and was in awe of the difference in quality and craftsmanship.

  • @Hellpoker

Canon has horrible quality control. Just look at their 50mm 1.2 that has all of it's back focusing issues.

  • @Hellpoker

Oh, and aside from the poor quality control... the innards of the lenses is WAY too delicate.

I've taken L-series lenses into sub-zero temperatures... FAILED. Nikkor lenses didn't even have a problem.

I've taken L-series lenses inside of an L-39 fighter jet and it shattered the floruite elements. Took Nikkor lenses with me and they had no problems.

Oh, and there aren't any Canon lenses in the ISS either. Wonder why.

  • i think d4n131M3j14 is not completely wrong.

obviously i don't agree with the fact of the "asian slaves", but i think that, considering hand crafting costs, optical glass and other stuff, i think that photographic gear is overpriced. i don't question the goodness of the conceptual and constructive process, but i find a little ridicolous that a supertele lens (for good as it is, don't questioning this i repeat) costs as a car!!

  • You are right that these lenses are extremely expensive (as if you buy a small car)...but they are not overpriced! Overpriced means that an object costs more than it's actual value....a small research in optical industry (telescopes, binoculars, birding monoculars ect) will show you that premium glass costs a lot.

  • remember my friend that canon lenses are always overpriced because their quality is not so good as could be a nikkor one. :D

  • Nikkor equivalent super telephotos cost even more than Canon's! But to tell you the truth the grand majority of sports and wildlife photographers (I'm a semi-pro wildlife photographer) prefer Canon super lenses due to faster and more accurate focusing system. Both companies are anyway the elite in photography industry.

  • i know that costs more. but the fairy tale of the AF system is obsolete (even more with the d3..).

i'm a semi pro sport photographer, and i used both nikon and canon pro gear including long telephoto. i can assure you that pro uses canon because of the cost and of the service canon gives on track that is far better than nikon nps.

but nikon lenses are infinitely better, sharper, better colors (canon's reds are too punchy), faster focusing, LIGHTER, MUCH LIGHTER! and better contrast

  • Well I'm a "Canon guy" and never had the opportunity to use Nikon lenses in order to have an opinion on their performance! To tell you the truth I also love this Canon's white paint...it attracts people's attention immediately :-)!!!

  • it's different.. you know why canon make white lenses? (well even nikon does, but they're rare..). it's because of the heat. on track under the sun a black lens become HOT! a wite lens lot less.. but being white cost a price in terms of weight. white lenses weight a lot more than black ones made out of carbon and other light materials

  • Yes I've also heard that story and makes a lot of sense to me. Have you got any personal website? Do you work for a cetrain agency? What shorts of sports events do you shoot?

  • no i've got no site. i live in italy and i worked for a local agency called fotosport.bike racing is what i do most.

last event was sbk in misano, june 2008

  • It costs a lot cause optical companies (in order to achieve top performance in their products) use exotic glass materials such as Calcium Fluoride or FPL-53 Ohara, which cost several hundred dollars per inch!!!

So when you try to construct a huge 500mm f/4 or a 400mm f/2.8 super tele you need a lot of this exotic glass... not to mention the difficult and high scientific work to transform this raw material to a fine optical instrument

  • Viagra is part of the drug industry, which i recall is one of the wealthiest in the world. but we're not talking drugs, we're talking about something that takes manual labor that must be precise, not like shoes. Companies like Rolls Royce make one phantom in over 500 hours by hand for the most part. It's not just a scam, it's cost for materials and labor. If aspherical elements can cost as much as silver, I'd say the materials were not cheap. Nikon has the edge in wides, canon in telephotos

  • Haven't you seen Canon's new TS-E 17&24mm tilt shift lenses as well as the new 24mm f/1.4L II? Sorry mate but Canon has caught up already.

  • @sando1975

Don't care about him. He dosen't seem to have a clue about how the free market works.

An item is worth the money people are willing to pay for them. Not more, not less.

  • You know, it is possible to have a discussion without attacking person ;)

Regarding oligopoly - there is a reason there are quite few companies making good lenses. Go have fun with your Tamron.

I, and a lot of other people think the L-lenses are worth what they cost, and the fact that Canon are able to sell them proves they're not overpriced.

Sure, they are expensive as hell, and Canon probably makes irresponsibly much money making them, but that's what they're worth, as people buy them

  • Is it really possible to have a discussion without attacking person?

"He dosen't seem to have a clue about how the free market works."

That just sounds like patronizing, and that's not very polite or respectful.

It seems I didin't get my point across, this discussion is obviously not getting anywhere.

  • I probably was tired when I wrote that, and I'm sorry I was a little harsh.

No, I don't think the discussion is getting anywhere, either.

We have different opinions. I don't think they're overpriced, you think they are :)

Anyways - When you are starting up a factory selling L-quality lenses to 1/3 of the price, I'll be a regular customer ;)

  • the problems wich involves the costs for a lens such a supertele lens is not in production times, but in optical glass.

optical glass costs LOTTA LOTTA MONEY.

  • also to get such a large piece of glass optically perfect aint cheap eitha.

  • The optics make the cost grow. The fifth lens (made by fluorite) is the perfect example...very difficult to work with it, very expensive. The same stands for telescopes. A 5" apochromatic refractor costs around 5.500$ due to very expensive, hand made optics

  • And again with the hand-made comments.. marketing has really made everyone believe hand-made stuff is actually expensive.. Then why do they use underpayed slaves.. I mean asian workers? The most money is spent on marketing, not glass.

  • You are wrong...these people who make those expensive lenses are not underpaid asian slaves but top optical engineers (with big incomes) who first design, then create and finally personally guarantee optical and mechanical excellency...this "excellency" is what you pay for

  • Haaaaaaaahahahaahhah yeah right and my mother is superman! lololol.

    P-L-E-A-S-E

Don't tell me you actually believe what you just said.. Engineers wouldn't do hand labor. Oh and giorgetto giugiaro builds de D3 by hand hahahahaha

  • Instead of dispalying your total ignorance on this issue...why don't you try some web photography forums (like canon digital forum), ask your questions and you will find out if these people are a bumch of underpaid slaves-like you say- or top optical engineers.

  • So.. you are one of these over-payed engineers?

What do photographers know about production lines or manufacturing? Nothing!

What would you even know about that?

Insted of showing you incapability of having a conversation, go take read a book!

  • I know a few mechanical engineers that do hand labor. "go take read a book" <--- huh?

  • Reading books is good.

What kind of mechanical engineers? They actually work on production lines? They put their hands on every product their workplace produces?

Have you seen american choppers? ok, imagine they were engineers, they build by hand, so expensive motorcycles. Difference? That's not mass production, lenses are. Not even ferraris are built by their designers, there are some ladies sewing leather seats and 25 yr old kids putting engines toghether.

  • Whether you like it or not, whether you can understand it or not hundrends of pro sports and wildlife photographers around the world make their living using these magnificent lenses and are willing to pay top dollar to purchase them and use them

  • That's not the case here, I actually have thousands of dollars in fine glass, but that doesn't mean that I don't think they are over priced.

  • I would also like to buy this lens for a 1000$ (who wouldn't ?)...but the fact is that nobody forces you to buy them...if you think that they are overpriced...skip them... buy something else (we are living in a free world aren't we?)...and face the consequences of your decision....(go to your editor and sell photos taken with non "overpriced" lenses) it will be a funny moment!

  • Thats not the point, you seem uncapable to understand written language. The fact that you can "supposedly" choose doesn't man they should rip you off. That is the point here. Editors don't really care about what lenses you use, if you get your stuff right you could achieve the same results with a cheap lens, but a good lens like this obviously offers a lot of advantages which make a photographers job easier.

  • I will skip your offensive comment...(after all the easiest thing for me would be to answer the same way) and only finally add one thing. I make money from my wildlife photography....when I signed my first contract with an american photo library agency the very first thing they told me was that they would accept images to be submitted ONLY if they maintain sharpness and clarity after a 200% of digital magnification....try magnify 200 times an image taken with an ordinary "non overpriced" lens!!

  • And again, you don't seem to understand, thank god your job is to take pictures and not to have written conversations (Sorry but I'm annoyed). I am not saying they are bad lenses, or that you should use consumer grade lenses, that was a side comment (altough you could achieve same results with a cheaper lens, just not on the same situation). What I have been saying all along is that they are overpriced and that the fact that they are hand made doesn't justify that price, that's it.

  • OK you made your point...you think that they are overpriced....the truth is that we haven't yet heard from you which are the technical facts that have driven you to this conclusion. Are you an optician in order to judge the type of glass they use and how much does this cost in the optical market? Are you a mechanical expert to judge if the focusing system is genius or not and if worths the money or not?

  • Do you have any short of previous experience in optical industry in order to evaluate the cost of the final product?

You 've got every right to say that these lenses are expensive, cause for the average consumer it is....but only people who know exactly the manufacturing expenses can judge if they are overpriced or not

  • Have you ever thought that although there are several optical companies out there only Canon, Nikon and Sigma dare produce such enormus telephotos in that premium level? Have you ever wondered why? Maybe because it is too damn difficult? Is it possible that this fact rockets to the sky the overall price?

  • So in summary.... I'm very curious to know who the fuck are you to judge if this lens is overpriced or not. What is your technical knowledge on trhis issue. Are you involved in anyway to the highly sophisticated optical-lens industry?

Have you ever hade any "inside" information regarding the manufacturing procedure and which facts define and determine the final cost?....be my guest my friend...I'm waiting to know

  • These are the lenses that combined with pro camera bodies produce image quality which photo libraries are willing to pay for...they are the best out there (both optically and mechanically) and naturally cost a lot of money....

  • So just because people are willing to pay a lot for them justfies their inflated price?

  • They should also include AF test on these lenses using FocusTestChart. LOL!

  • The music in these series of videos is amazing. And I too enjoy how he lamely repeats the full name of the lens every time it is mentioned.

  • It's made in Japan, so there is NO DUST. :)

  • Great stuff I'm glad I found it in english I watched in in japanese several times before I found english. Does anyone have how they make cameras

  • Thx for posting!

    Very interesting.

  • those finger gloves are a recipe for disaster! those poor clean lenses...

  • How can they keep dust out of these lens?

  • Love the way he keeps repeating "EF 500MM F4 L IS USM" lol

  • How come they're not wearing hair bonnets?

  • great video :) i sent this to most my camera-friendly friends. You'd have to be a moron not to find this fascinating. I love canon......

  • Now I know why my Canon 70mm-200mm cost so much theres alot that goes into making a lens the canoon 600mm is aroun $10,000.00

  • Yeah, wow. I didn't know this stuff.

  • thanks for posting!
