After all that he faced (the death of Qui-Gon, his mothers' death, Ashokas' death and finnaly the nightmares about the death of Padme) made him hopeless. He lost hope to the light side and wanted to sacrifice himself to save the ones he loved. The lesson from Anakin Skywalkers' tale, is to never give up hope
