  • awesome video nice view

  • I drove the Wagon for 17 years and there isn't anyone in this vieo that would have caught my piece. I would have left them all in the house.

  • If they need life flight the green light is easy to see at night....at least that is what ive been told

  • The Green Light and red light were instituted because the First Fire Commishner was a Ship Captain, and he wanted them Engines and Trucks, along with the Fire Stations.

  • the red and green are for christmas

  • Colt I strongly disagree, the black & red has awesome contrast, NYFD I don't mind, Miami, ouch, but to say chicagos scheme is bad, You sire can kiss my ass!!!

  • Chicago Fire Department fire trucks are ugly, i'll stick to FDNY and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue

  • I like the green light on to p and near the headlights =)

  • nice couch

  • its the wind up on that q that just sounds wierd the rest is fine

  • somebody needs to clean that station

  • i'm begining to gt used to those E q's

  • Who's quartered with Engine 18?

  • Engine 18 shares quarters with Battalion 4 and BLS ambulance 84. When they moved to their new station during August of 2008 (about 2 blocks south of there old quarters) the fire investigators moved into their much larger fire station with them. The fire investigators use the number 46 to identify that they are from the Bureau of Fire Investigation. The new station houses at least 5 or more fire investigation units.Units 463 through 467 and probably a few more as well.

  • Cool, thanks!

  • what's that mess in the station

looks like a warehouse , not a fire station

  • shutup

  • @gali4436

    kiss my ass

  • I have a question..

To be a fireman and take part and help a firedepartment in America, is needed to be an American, or can be a European, a example?

  • First...you will need to become American Citizen, or Dual Citizen

  • Ah okey ;)

    Thans schutdawg

  • Im pretty sure it doesnt matter.

As long as when you join you have to be a resident of that town; meaning you have to live there. And after 4 years, you can move to a different town. Well from what I know; but it could be different depending on the city/town. By that time you probably would already have a dual citizenship for America anyways...

  • Yes, thanks for help and for yout answer too Jabackazoid41! ;)

  • cool ! are there any similarities to the movie ? why couldn't the CFD reverse that ? than it would be the CFD's most popular engine co. / house !

is 46 house close to 65 house ?

if I remember correctly E65 T52 house was where the 17 house was in the movie !

LOL I love your you tube name ! I also like to play with boobs ! LOL ! ;-)

  • in the Chicago Fire Department is there an actual Engine Co. 17 ?

I know in the movie 17 is actually Engine Co. 18 ! and truck 46 was actually truck 5

  • No there is not however there is an engine 46 and ladder 17 that a quartered together

  • Where i live, during a training exorcise a tanker rolled over, the passenger was ejected from the truck and was crushed. Rollovers do happen, be sure to wear your seatbelt.

  • Comment removed

  • buddy it happens all the time

  • Hmm . . . . I did not know that !

  • it happens

  • Strength and Honor

    God Bless

  • Nice video!

  • ya that was a good clip

  • that fire house is abandoned now engine 18 and the ambo moved to a diffrent firehouse

  • we had a fire in our station but got it out wit the extinguisher

  • wat happens if theres a fire in the fire station wat wud u do? ;)

  • Put it out.

  • hilltown township had a fire in one of they fire houses and they had they other station help.

  • You call for help then, and once its out you stare at the ground in shame while the other companies laugh their asses off.

  • My fire co.(Silverdale Vol. Fire Co. of Silverdale, Pa.) is now making us wear seatbelts when we go out on fire calls. It's a very good idea, even though it's a little uncomfortable.

  • same in ireland

  • I would love to work there!

  • wow chicago wering bunker pants

  • i hate the new thing chicago did allowing the 3/4 boots and the long turnout coat insted of the pants

  • 3/4 BOOTS?

  • thats the old school boots that dont have the pants connected to them there just the boots

  • I agree it looks very old school and archaic. I would hate to wear them to a fire makes me love my pants even more Good Vid tho

  • The green light is supposted to be the command sight on a scene

  • only a single rotating light one green on the left side one red on the right of the rig is for safe harbor

  • wow slow much

  • Oh Really? Thats so cool! (and smart!!)

    Thanks for that info!

  • for what does the green light on the fire trucks stand for?

i´ve seen it only at the chicago fd units

  • Thats what I always wanted to know!

  • i never heard about them being for fog, i do know back in the day and old commissioner had a nautical background and he started the red/green deal on all apparatus and fire houses.

  • hm ok thats a realy clever idea i think and it looks great i love the cfd units

  • @CSILCPD A supposed study was done by Chicago Fire which found that Color Blind individuals can recognize the green filtered light better than any color or white. It was supposed to help with visual acuity for the Color Blind while driving.

  • @fighting17chicago That may be why they kept it, but it originated with the first Fire Commisioner.

  • @CSILCPD the green light means that there is an emt or a medic on board the truck.

  • @LordWormx420x are you sure on that for the chicago trucks? I thought it was more of a traditional thing with the green lights. Do you work for the cfd?

  • NVA003: It really depends on what fire department you go to. Some fire departments run 24 shifts, with 38 hour down time, others run three shifts a day. WHen the crew is having dinner and a call comes through, the expectation is an immediate response, whether from the house or at a resturaunt. Aside from paying the check, we drop our forks and head for the truck.

  • I like the way the station is set up...it looks and feels very comfortable for a fire station. My fire station feels like a hospital waiting room...everything looks and feels sterile. No personal touch to it

  • how long does it usually take a firefighter to get ready when a call comes in and the crew are having dinner?just curious, and also the time it takes on a normal shift

  • a minute aint that bad dude

  • Why the heck dont they respond faster. UK firefightrs are up and out straight away. That bloke seems to take 5 minutes to put trousers on. lol

  • Isnt in the UK the "trousers" one piece? In the us there are 2pieces, so it may take a little bit longer, it only took these guys 1 min to get out... how fast do these guys need to go?

  • @shfrfghtr what do you mean 2 piece?????

  • @shfrfghtr I can get my bunker pants and coat on in 30 second add an SCBA all together is about 1 minute.

  • the truck hadnt even started yet. no need to hurry up cuz pumper trucks like these need to be run about 30 seconds to a minute before heavy running. and it didnt take 5 minutes. so keep ur brit firefighting politics to urself

  • @loopylawrence LOL ya well the video is only 1:40 long so he was a little quicker than 5 minutes. Besides he looks like he has been on the job for 20 to 30 years. You don't get as excited as you used too or move as fast in the old days. I have been on the job going on 30 years volunteer and paid I don't get in as much of a hurry as I used too either.

  • @loopylawrence If you listen a Hazmat was not dispatched, its not a Physical visable gas leek, its only readable on a Meter, the Fire Department just responds incase the gas is ignited and to evacuate people and give medical treatment. The ladder was dispatched because its in a Tall building. And the engine put water on the fire.

  • Do some ff's in the CFD still wear trench coats and pullup boots?

  • they changed it in 2006, now chicago ffs wear the newer/traditional gear, similar to the fdny

  • I see, thanks!

  • good video, were a volunteer company too. Sorry to hear about your FF, we lost a chief a couple of months back.

  • my dad works for chicago engine 125

  • with what truck responding with engine 18

  • to be honest with ya man, i do no remember. sorry about that, if i knew i'd tell ya but i took this video a while ago so i dont remember.

  • thats the first fire truck ive ever seen with a green light...

  • all chicago fire trucks have green lights on the right side

  • i know that chief,i used to work with him at CFD until switched fire depts

  • until i switched to mpfd

  • My Department is 100% Vol. We run outta 4 firehouses in town and we get 3 min after 1st tones go off. Pretty good considering there are no sleeping quarters, so everyone has to respong to the station first.

  • i agree, it took a while.

  • how long do you think it should have taken? they got out in a minute... this is nothing to say it took a while compared to volunteer depts that responde to the same type of calls that take longer due to the FF's having to come from home which takes at LEAST aprox 5mins. this was all within the rules of the textbook of response times.

  • You've made a good point. However, most volunteer departments are not entirely VOLUNTEER. The department I am with is a Paid/Volunter department. We work 24/48s like every full time department. Even full volunteer departments have what they call DAY MEN. 8-5 shifts so there is a lot of truth to what you said , but response time is based on departmen, not department type.

  • took them a little while to pull out.

  • how long do you think it should have taken? they got out in a minute... this is nothing to say it took a while compared to volunteer depts that responde to the same type of calls that take longer due to the FF's having to come from home which takes at LEAST aprox 5mins. this was all within the rules of the textbook of response times.

  • Hell of a push out, what did it take, 5 minutes!?! The run must have been at nap time after lunchipoo!!!

  • It took 60seconds for them to pull out.... what more do you want?

  • This video of Engine 18 was great but much too short. I loved it!!!!!

  • i kno!!! just watching it makes me watch in awe

  • wats the point of green lights

  • i dont kno but i like,lol

  • dunno about the united states but here in the U.K. green lights are for doctors cars, dunno maybe something to say its a medical responce too. just a guess

  • maby but here in canada off duty fire fighters have green lights in there cars in case of somthing like 911 were they all need to go working or not

  • i guess its one of those things youd have to spend hours on google for lol or not sometimes

  • ok googeld it and its stuped it started out as a thing to mark the left side of the truck and they never took it off just traditon

  • some traditions are strange lol, still we know why now eh nice one on googling that. hey i should put green lights on my cycle lol ive already got blues on there the vids on youtube

  • The Fire Commissioner at the time, Albert Goodrich, had a nautical background and decided that all fire apparatus in Chicago should feature at least one red light on the left side and a green light on the right, a lighting scheme that is still in place today. Sorry it took so long for my reply. If you would like more info, send me a message and i'll give you the address where it has alot of info bout the Chicago Fire Dept.

  • The purpose of the green lights was a Chicago tradition. It start with Commissioner Albert Goodrich of the Chicago Fire Department (1927 - 1931) had a nautical background. He applied the marine scheme (red light on port, green light on starboard) to fire apparatus, and the idea became a tradition of the Chicago Fire Department. It is also used to mark the bay doors at all Chicago fire stations and most suburbs. I know our fire houses have them.

  • It's a Navy thing. Starboard, Port sides of da ship. That's why their General Orders are so screwed up, they're from the Blue Jackets manuals from the Navy days in the days of yore.

  • our station recives our calls through our computer system. its the greatest thing. it shows what time the call was placed, the type of emergency, and what trucks are responding to the call.

  • just another fire!

  • William Grant was the firemen that died.

  • Just curious what the riding positions are on an engine and ladder in Chicago ie nozzleman, etc, what does each truck staff at??

  • physical seats mean nothing but i think you meant this ENGINE pipe 2nd up hydrant enginer (rank) officer (rank Cpt. ot Lt.) TRUCK 5men 2 Roof (driver and FF siting behind him) 2 Search or ladder dependens on1st or 2nd truck 1 Officer
  • The reason why Chicago firehouses and rigs have green lights is that one of their Chiefs long ago had a nautical background. Red light for starboard and green for port. It's been an unbroken tradition ever since. Great video, by the way, too bad they're gonna close this house.

  • thanks

  • Hello pumperman26, I'm not very nautically inclined myself, but I think its the other way around, red for port (left), and green for starboard (right). But your explanation still makes sense, that matches what's on the CFD rigs... For the most part, emergency vehicles all seem to have the red on the driver's side. Here in NZ, we're right-hand-drive, so the red is on the right on all the cop cars. Australia is pretty ambidextrous and the rest of the world mostly seems to stick to one colour...

  • why do chicago fd trucks have green warning lights?

  • Dont seem to be in a very big hurry.

  • how do firehouses in chicago get their runs, computers like NYC or telephone??

  • they get them via computer system at the watch/alarm desk.

  • this is the second oldest house in the city,if you look in the ceiling you can see where they pluged the holes for the horse harness. This house is being replaced by a new one being built around the corner. The new house will be in service sometime this summer [08]. The house will be used for some kind of histroical purpose.

  • its weird how australia and america have total different types of engines ours are more 4 wheel drive and stuff compared to yours which are more 2 wheel drive

  • Not quite mate, the major cities all have two wheel drive for the urban pumpers. 4WD trucks are the main vehicles where the risk is predominantly wildfire. The real difference is in the size! Much bigger trucks over there. Oh, and that the US and Canada (maybe other places?) have 'engines' and 'trucks', while we, like Europe, have multi task vehicles and crews.

  • why is there a green light on the light bar you almost never see that

  • its a tradition that has been kept in the department for years.

  • The fire commissioner in the 1920s had a nautical background, and instituted the practice of a green light opposite a red light, similar to boats' port and starboard lights. It's not extremely practical, but it has stuck as a tradition.

  • Nice video. Wish we could get our department to go with that paint scheme. Always have liked it.

  • is this the oldest fire house in the city?

  • no, not that i know of, the oldest (operating) fire house in chicago if i remember correctly is engine company 98 at 700 west chicago ave. built in 1904. But i may be wrong. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • I think 18's house was build in 1871 but thank you for letting me know about 98's

  • im pretty sure the oldest is engine 96-truck 29 in B13

  • I'm a FF in NY and have never seen emergancy apparatus with the green light, any reason for that? visability, tradition?

  • tradition, there should be info up above from a same question like yours. thanks for watching and commenting.

  • The Fire Commissioner at the time, Albert Goodrich, had a nautical background and decided that all fire apparatus in Chicago should feature at least one red light on the left side and a green light on the right, just like the boats/ships and ports, a lighting scheme that is still in place today.

  • I am already a firefighter. Tell your nephew it's a great and exciting job, and he would enjoy it. If you have any questions about being a firefighter, don't hesitate to message me.

  • Just a quick note to say thanks for posting.. My 3 year old Nephew is GOING to be a Firefighter when he grows up and loved to see the inside of the Firehouse. cheers.

  • I visited that station 3 years ago

    and had dinner with them

  • Since when did CFD start wearing bunker pants.

  • right around last summer or fall. thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Last year

  • January 2007 little by little turnouts came in and three quarters went out

  • Can someone please let me know where this Fire House is located?

    Thank you!!

  • 1125 w roosevelt, chicago illinois.

  • Thank you so much. The little boy I watch is in LOVE with fire trucks, houses, anything that has to do with them. So Im just trying to get a list going of all the places we can visit when the weather becomes more appealing. Thank you very much again!!

  • great hussle lol

  • I loved it. I spent lots of time at this fire house as a kid with my dad. Back then,it was Eng.18 ,Truck 5, Battalion 7 . Give us more please

  • thanks, will do next time i'm in the area. glad i can bring back childhood memories.

  • if someone can translate that would be great, i'd like to reply to this persons comment but i dont know how because i dont know what it says, thanks. Merry Christmas!

  • I went to Chicago and met the guys there

  • ahh, nice, u met the guys at engine 18's house?

  • Its about time they went to full bunker gear!

  • o yeah and do u kno were i could find some fire pictures from chicago

  • yeah i dont like that bunker stuff

  • All Chicago FireFighters Are Now Wearing Full Bunker Gear!! It Is Something That Went Into Effect Not TOO Long Ago! There Is No More Long Coat And Pull Up Boots. Sadly!

  • Backdraft definitely rocked the pull ups. Oh yea, and thanks for the seatbelt message in the description. So many fire departments spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on safety, only to forget the first line of defense; seatbelts...RIP Truck 51 Firefighter

  • no problem man, thanks for the comment! Be Good Be Safe

  • So, did they do away with the three-quarter boots? I saw the officer putting on bunker pants...I didn't know Chicago had switched

  • i think there issued to truck companies and the snorkal squads

  • Good video of a quick response watch?v=mg0nZZilTuw Don't forget to add the youtube part in the front of the link

  • which truck is E-18 with

  • its with an ambo, forgot the #.

  • okay, thanks

  • i just looked, ambulance 84 and Batt. ch 4.

  • perfect. thanks, much appreciated!

  • no prob.

  • ewl green lights! hahaha

  • haha, i know, it was started by a battalion chief in the 70's i believe...

  • i live in detroit and we lost a firefighter 2-2007 when a suv slammed in to them throwing out the driver through the winshield and the rig ran him over died at the hospital hours later

  • was the guy in the rig wearing a seatbelt, sorry to hear that man, thanks for watching.

  • I remember when Truck 30 whent crashing through a bar because of a cab.. Some of the members had to retire I believe.. I don't think anyone died.. I was at the station and Lt. Pat Baker was telling me about it

  • good video !!!!!!!!!!! I and fellow hammond firefighters attended bill grants funeral it was sad !!!!!!!!!! seatbelts do save lives

  • why did it take them so long to get out of the door? You gotta get out of that door within 30 seconds!!

  • maybe where u are from, but not here. normal response time. a retired chicago fire chief had said to me before he passed away is, its better to get there, then to not get there at all, and if you do get there, then you are of help, but if u dont get there, u are of no help. so in stead of RUSHING to the trucks and end up being in risk up messing up, they make sure they know what they are doing and know they are doing it CORRECTLY AND SAFLEY!!

  • plus it was just a gas leak. so nothing EXTREMELY MAJOR for these guys, this is a BS call to them.

  • Two minutes. Anybody else do two-minute drills? If the engine's out the door within two minutes, it's still a good response. No rush is exactly right.

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

  • nice vid. wat is an ambulance doing in the hall?

  • they do their own medical, no contract. ITS THE BIG CITY WAY!! thanks for watching.

  • thanks for posting.... plz keep em coming
