We have been warned by wise men since the 1970's about this calamity we are now it. We still have precious little time to stop the fiscal destruction of the USA!
mormonanswerman I love this video and have shared it with my family, very interesting and timely. Where can I find the transcript from this specific talk by Ezra Taft Benson? Can it be found on the lds website? I have had some trouble locating it. Thanks for the great contribution to YouTube.
@parkifer Hey there! Pres. Benson was an awesome prophet and participant in the government sector as well. I don't know exactly where you can find this talk, but it was in the 70's, and you could google some of the key phrases in it, and it will pop up somewhere.
I live in Australia and we have a "socialized health care" system, as does every other rich country. And guess what? We aren't a communist country. We haven't turned into a Stalinist pariah state. I think you guys are overreacting and, quite frankly, bringing religion into the debate is quite unsavoury. Might I remind you that there are liberal Mormons, like them or not.
@canterdogs a liberal mormon is what? One that is OK with socialism/communism?
The USA is not a communist country, and we just passed it to. Its what it leads to. If you are not communist now, you will be after some time and after the system implodes from the burden of debt. That's when drastic forms of changes will come and liberties would be lost.
We have had a government healthcare option for over 3 decades. Even the conservatives dare not dismantle it. And private options are subsidised by the fed govt. Australia has a good mix of govt and market economy, that withstood the excesses resulting from the GFC that was started on Wall Street under the watch of libertarian Greenspan, and the anti-regulation Bush admin. In Oz our banks were well regulated and so they were solvent during the worst times. No bail outs needed here.
@canterdogs You never know when things are going to fail or not, but that to me is not the measure of its success. The main thing for me is FREEDOM. When we are compelled to do something and it is enforced by the rule of government, that's when our freedoms are lost. Some people are OK with that, but I am not.
I understand where ur coming from. But Obama's health plans were out there during the election. the American people had the freedom to either elect him or McCain. They chose overwhelmingly to support Obama. If the majority have voted for such reforms then it is incumbent on the administration to deliver on their promises. Might I also add that the Health care bill passed in the US is almost exactly the same as the one Mitt Romney proposed.
Well Christ was socialist. "If you see a man without his cloak, give him yours." it does not surprise me that this comes from the Mormon when a HALF black man becomes leader of the free world AND socialism did not exist as an IDEA until 1849. However I am glad that he did mention medicare and social security. TWO more programs that I am against. But why nothing was said when GWB IRRESPONSIBLY expanded medicare?
Sure Jesus Christ was a benevolent person, but socialist is the wrong term, because socialism by definition needs an ALL POWERFUL STATE to enforce it. That's what is wrong with it. It required compulsion, it requires force and punishment for those that don't pay up their taxes.
Jesus Christ required no tax, but a tithe, and if you didn't pay a tithe there is no punishment NOW, but at judgment day. Its way different!
This is where Pres. Benson speaks of a National Health Insurance Program (and he identifies it for what it IS, "socialized medicine").
He expresses his concern for the transfer of responsibility of local governments to the federal government, which led to the collapse of Great Britain, and New York City. It will bring insolvency to keep this up. Maybe Obama and others in power know that? Question is, WHY are they driving the country into deeper debt and teetering on bankruptcy
My father spoke of this many times! My grandfather also believed this and I've heard these things for years by my parents. I still fight against the evils of Socialism and Communism. I was born and I will die a "Free Man."
Outstanding video. The only thing that would make it more effective would be to hear this after reading an official statement on communism\socialism from the first presidency. "Warning to Church Members" aug 1936 - The Improvement Era by Pres Heber J Grant
and then "Statement concerning the position of the church on communism" by Pres David O McKay Priesthood session of conf april 9 1966.
I enjoyed this vid, & I understand where you're coming from, and I'm not about to get into a debate; this is just a thought. If you want to get your point across in opposition to the this health care, you would get much further (by "further" I mean persuade more people) if you used reasoning that could be accepted by anyone, & not only the religious portion of the population. I know it depends on who you're trying to persuade, but most people of faith (that I know of) don't need to be persuaded.
I tend to think that this vid is primarily for members of the Church who believe in prophets already, because in my experience, there are several members of the Church who believe in government assistance, welfare, socialism, etc., and they don't seem to grasp that charity is to be a voluntary act to be charity. And if someone is forced to do good, then it is evil. I know that's strong, but the Book of Mormon says this:
Moro. 7: 8 For behold, if a man being evil giveth a gift, he doeth it grudgingly; wherefore it is counted unto him the same as if he had retained the gift; wherefore he is counted evil before God. 9 And likewise also is it counted evil unto a man, if he shall pray and not with real intent of heart; yea, and it profiteth him nothing, for God receiveth none such. 10 Wherefore, a man being evil cannot do that which is good; neither will he give a good gift.
I don't agree with Mr. Bensons worldview. But, he is right for many reasons, some right others wrong. He does make one important point that should never be forgotten. The farther towards socialism we go the more powerful central government becomes. If you don't like the idea of a religious power controlling every aspect of your life, a massive central gov't is no kind of substitute.
Awesome!!! Thanks for posting.

I for one do NOT want the economy to collapse. This second depression is bad enough for me.

I love Ezra Taft Benson. Surely a prophet of God and a visionary on personal liberties.
