i fuckin hate haters, yes I cant play a lick but watching masters is my outlet and to have fuckin haters who can barely play something like this diss it and diss GG, go Fuck yo self
The lick from 0:50-0:55 with these unreal downbends at the beginning sounds so fantastic. Can´t hardly believe that he is improvising such awesome licks like this, but i know it´s true. He is simply the best.
@todomusika No he isn't 40 yet. 27th December of this year. Hopefully he'll have a killer, guitar-infested party the likes of which the world has not yet witnessed!
@liquidmetal1 yeah you're right, I was probably stoned!? I must have confused some information somewhere on the web.. Thanks for the correction, that means he will be alive for some extra months ; ) Cheers!
Guthrie has some awesome Legato and well everything else to.A also love his phrasing and all the cool bend's he uses in everything.Specially like the Jeff Beck vid where he pulls the B down right off the neck and brings it back while making it sound like one smooth bend even though it jumps an octave when it comes off the neck.Thats tough and Guth makes it look so easy.lol
Yeah,Richie is great.I only heard of him about amonth ago and have to say he is an awesome musician.Great song's,great playing and awesome voice he has it all.
I'm a great fan of Slash's music and he was my inspiration in playin' guitar. But there's no way to compare him with Guthrie. Besides tecnique, Guthrie is more versatile, peculiar and so on.
Slash has got a wonderful musicality and style, I love his songs and solos, but he lacks tecnique and music knowledge and this makes him boring especially in improvisation.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If slash practiced as rigorously and repetitively as Guthrie did then im sure Slash would be near Guthries level or beyond it. See, slash actually went out and got laid and partied and had a fucken awesome time living the rock and roll lifestyle you know? No, cuz you're a closet guitarist aren't you. "Hype and marketing"?, You're a fucken dumbass douchebag.
"See, Slash actually went out and got laid and partied and had a fuckin awsome time LIVING THE ROCK AND ROLL LIFESTYLE...."
THAT'S why I hate the music industry, all the popular shitty music and all celebrities... It's all about STYLE: Dressing, Performance, Marketing etc... And Slash is one of it's products....
Don't get me wrong.. I liked Slash when I was a kid.. But he is NOTHING compared to Guthrie....
It's all about the music.... I could sit 24h and listen to guthries playing while he sits on a chair and I would enjoy it more than a "Rockband"-Concert with all the hype and stage performance....
It's all about the music!!!
And the ones who care about style and image, when they talk about music are just victims of our whole stupid society...
P.S: I don't think Slash would be beyond Guthries Level if he practiced as long as him.... There are a lot of Guitarists who practiced as long as Guthrie but they only got faster xD... It depends on musicality and musical knowledge (theory, genres you are home in) and Guthrie has it all....
It's not like I am a Guthrie "Fanboy"... I like a lot of Guitarists.. but comparing Slash to Guthrie is ridiculous..
"It's not like I am a Guthrie "Fanboy"... I like a lot of Guitarists.. but comparing Slash to Guthrie is ridiculous.."
So then why the fuck are you comparing them? All im sayin is, slash did more with his life than sit in a room all day practicing scales and reading msuic theory books. We all know Guthrie is technically better and alot more knowledgable, big fucken deal! He'll never be a big mainstream name like Slash, and if you wanna hate on slash for that then go fuck yourself.
Because I don't understand the point of your comment....
"All im sayin is, slash did more with his life than sit in a room all day practicing scales and reading msuic theory books..."
What are you trying to say?? Maybe that Slash "enjoyed" his life more?? Or that Slash had more "fun" in his life than Guthrie who (in your words) "sat in a room all day practicing scales and reading music theory books". I bet Guthrie wouldn't even want to have the life that slash has...
At least it's worth to "waste" your life with practicing.... If someday I could play on Guthries level, that would be better than all the bitches, cars and parties.....
Slash would give what's left of his hair to play one tenth as good as Guthrie. I don't think slash has turned off his wah wah since 1989..and that was just for a few minutes while he was blowing Axl. Axl didn't like the hiss..it was impeding his ability to concentrate and effectively cum in Slash's mouth. I,d rather live in a fucking barn full of spiders and play like Guthrie than live in a mansion and be stuck in Slash's pentatonic prison!
Hee hee, you're funny. Im sure anyone would rather be able to play like Guthrie than Slash. But how do you get there? Don't do anything other than play guitar for 12 hours a day, don't ever learn how to drive, ride a bike or swim. Live an entirely isolated existence until you feel you are stupidly good so that you can show off to all the people that ever laughed at you and called you a loser. Gl ever being like Guthrie.
Dude, I don't think it's about showing off. This guy can put on any track and own it. He can literally fly. What an unparallelled feeling it must be to absolutely own your guitar every single time you pick it up. This guy is the final step on the evolutionary ladder of guitar. He has no holes in his game.
Yeah sure, but you dont think that was part of his drive? I can see this guy getting ridiculed alot when he was younger, for being different. Which im not saying is a bad thing. All the greats were indifferent, and isolated from most of the outer world. Guthrie is a great, slash is a great in a different aspect.
Nobody could have played better than Slash on those gnr albums. He conquered the world, became a rock legend and a household name. That, I guess, is greatness.
so did kirk hammet...and he sucks fat donkey nuts...
guthrie is actually a pretty accomplished musician, and the reason he isnt "mainstream" is because mainstream music is technically deficient and no mainstream band could keep up with him.
and i guess i am a "fanboy" because as far as i can tell i have not seen or heard anyone equal or superior to guthrie in any respect....
Haha, like grammar fukn matters on youtube. Im not applying for a fukn job or trying to impress little noobs like you who cant do a fucken proper cover of Joe Satriani.
Guthrie is a truly amazing guitarist, easily one of the best, if not the best on this planet. His versatility and phrasing is fantastic, which is only matched by his amazing tone. I like how he doesn't repeat a single lick throughout all of these videos.
I will say it,In my opinion G.G. is the best guitarist in the world and in my opinion history. He is hands down the most versitile player ever with,Unreal smooth legato, insane phrasing, and the largest lick arsenal of anyone Ive ever seen in my life. The only guy I can think of that maches his fluidity inside of blazing speed patterns was Shawn Lane. Lane is my musical god and maybe? a little faster. But G.G. and his amazing fluidity is easier to listen to,Just my opinion of course.
i think paul gilbert's up there. paul gilbert's not really up there with GG, but he does have insane fluidity...especially in his ridiculous alternate picking. he's so crazy
Yeah,he is about the only one alive thats as close to Govan in that department. His Alternate technique is about as good as it gets,I think it could be a draw between them there,But then Guthrie has about 20 other techniques he can do just as perfect, and thats the thing that meakes him the guy that has set a new bar.All of these guys are insane bannanna's awesome,so we are so lucky to recognize what sets him appart from anything else before.Guthries gonna go to very high places.
Don't overlook Kiko Loureiro.. And I'm not even a fan of him... Great guitarists you've mentioned though and I had the pleasure of meeting Guthrie and having a 2 hour private lesson with him (well there were about 10 other people in the room but it was a tiny room) in Musicians Institute. He's a great teacher.
Thats awesome,And you are the second person That mentioned him to me,I will give a listen for sure.Thanx alot man, nothing better than checking out new amazing players.
Well, these are just opinions, nothing more really.Music to me is not a competition.I pretty much base my opinions on what I find easier to listen to,and rocognize as more than just talent. But truly amazing talent, but again music like all art is subjective. But I can listen to Gilbert and Govan and it never gets old.
@bencol123 seriously. doesn't repeat in hardly anything. thats how you know a master. so insane and still probably has a number of licks we haven't even heard yet....wish he'd come to the states
I Have been trying to figure out why I can't get enough of Guthrie - I keep coming back to his videos time after time. With this post I figured it out - INTENSITY!! There is no dead time in his runs every run leads some where and there are no filler notes. Kinda like Stevie, he has a ton of intensity and great phrasing (of course). I guess what I am trying to say is very note seems to have a purpose and he throws in tons of color - I think the man is Brilliant! My favorite on Youtube!
jizzed in my pants, nah but seriously he's such a cool player. Really cool improvisor. Certain parts of this click so well, great motifs, cells and ideas
Yeah, you're not the only one. I've wondered the same and didn't think it was even possible. Guthrie is literally too good to be true. The important thing is that he's got his own thing. He has a style and sound that he can call his own, which is the hardest thing.
oh god i keep coming back to this vid. this is what bluesrock guitar is all about: scientifically precise phrasing with the soul of a renegade cowboy.

Whatever guitar he picks up, it just looks like an extension of his body. The man was born to play the guitar.

I am never disappointed!
