You actually don't need to find coal. Just make a furnance and then burn some wood with planks and you'll get charcoal (it's the same as coal).

At the beginning the game was messing with you giving you only 1 sapling. Then the game gets generous and gives you a second sapling to ease your fears. Hope you get partner man, you deserve it dude!
