  • unfortunately this movie is about real research into sensory deprivation which they have applied to prisoners in guantanamo, as a form of torture. Deprive the mind of it's senses, and this is what happens. Pain brings him back from the void of de-evolution of the mind.

  • @SnowLeopardMike I really like your last sentence.

  • Reminds me of when I quit smoking when he's deformed and banging on the wall

  • "Cheesy 80's video effects"? I think modern CGI looks cheap and cheesy...

  • Take on me.......TAKE ON ME!

  • A-HA inspired them selves from this for their video TAKE ON ME : )

  • Mind Fuck

  • Anyone ever notice how much armpit hair she has?

  • @Jacobean666 And a nice ass.

  • i have been trying to find this memory for twenty years.

i was a little kid when i watched this movie. and as an adult all i could remember was a werewolf then this scene of a man beating himself between two walls shifting back and forth with each wall slam. i was channel changing so my memory was of two movies howling and Altered States .

one more thing off the list that haunt me and bother me. thank you to whoever posted this

  • @angelwolf333 it was closer to thirty years then twenty years when i first saw this.

i knew half of the memory was from howling when the guy starts to shift and pulls out a piece of his brain and puts it in the girls hand and says i want to give you a peice of my mind.

then i s guess i switched channels by hand back then when you had a cable box. to Altered States.

  • i love the music at the end

  • man this movie disturbed me so much when is first saw it

  • @skatingG0d

lol Na I thought it was cool tho. It was all in his head, affecting the real world kinda like Akira, pretty cool visuals for this time in movie hisory but because of that its cool.... First time I saw that scene I was like, "how'd they do that"

  • One of the worst movies of all time, in my opinion.

  • @jordanstrango Um, seriously? This is an interesting, unusual film, nowhere near one of the worst movies of all time. I mean, geez, there are literally thousands of very bad movies out there...are you saying this is worse than Marmaduke? Tango and Cash? Van Helsing?? Just throwing some random ones out there...

  • @DavidTRichard Lol, good points, but compared to the other movies William Hurt is in, I don't know how this didn't ruin him. I have an old Van Helsing parody on my channel, coincidentally.

  • this is what happens when people take drugs on a regular basis

  • Cheesy nothing - these effects will always be better than any CGI.

  • i'll have some of whatever he's smoking lol

  • Take on meeee.

  • This movie is so weird it's like a huge acid trip after eating spoiled food.

  • EU ADOREI ISSO

  • I love nipples.

  • What in the name of sweet living fuck?

  • I saw this on TV when I was a little kid and it scared the fucking shit out of me!

  • OMFG, this fuckin video and this fuckin movie the creators of it are fuckin crazy or what?

THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE WITHOUT DROGS & SHIT, TELL DAH TO ALL THE CREATORS AND PPL DAH HAVE THE IDEA OF THIS SHIT THAT NAMES ITSELF AS A "MOVIE"

  • @CALAMAR244 You know, for someone who hates this movie as much as you do, you seem to spend a inordinate amount of time going from clip to clip telling others exactly how much you hate it. Fine, you don't like it. We get it. Now go do something useful with your life.

  • @CALAMAR244 drugs are awesome. shut up.

  • This video sucks!!!

  • What an amusing movie. Reminds me of High School.

  • O video clipe de "Take on Me" do A-ha foi inspirado nesse filme.

  • Ooohhh... That's why we should just say NO to drugs.

  • Just say NO to drugs and isolation tanks. :P

  • i like the south park version with cartman

  • @cronus2196 yeah, thats awesome :)

  • Bill Hurt was kinda cute when he was younger...in a WASPy sort of way.

  • Blair Brown is hot! literally!

  • I just watched it,.... i payed to watch this? oh man im glad thats over.

  • @lunchmeat400 This movie gets a little too wrapped up in it's own bologna doesn't it?

  • The last four words of the movie were the entire point of the movie.

  • i love you emily?

  • @40andaJProd: Precisely.

  • what does that have to do with the movie? i never seen the full thing!

  • After you've seen the movie from start to finish I'll be happy to discuss it with you.

  • Don't forget that MTV did a promo from this movie as well. If y'all wanna see it,type mtv id busting the walls.

  • 0:29- freaky.

  • yeah Aha parodied the ending sequence for the video

  • TAKE ON ME, TAKE ME ON

    I´LL BE GONE

IN A DAY OR TWO !! ( the music is absent !! ) Falta la musica !

  • "Take on me" A-ha Of course

  • Exactly! I've thought the same thing for years...I am so glad someone else thought of it too.

  • 愛だろ 愛・・・

  • nov29

    Very similar to Morgellons... But

There isn't any majic walls, camera's and I damn sure didn't make it.

    Great Illisions

    Take Care,

    Love

    Louie

  • I like that moon at the end, very kissable.

  • This movie will completely deconstruct your mind and put it back together again and will enlighten your spirit. One glimpse of this film is like lsd to your brain. full of intelligence, wonder, a curiosity of life itself and the beginning of man with out of this world imagination. It shall make you rethink your position here on this tiny rock of an earth. it will want to make you go further.

    beautiful... this movie is.

  • @sydswirl What are you talking about? This is a terrible movie. Its an overblown homeopathy commercial, "Ingest shrooms, travel through time." Typical of the period when any quack championing psychedelics was praised as a guru. Listen folks, ingesting certain chemicals messes with your brain chemistry which makes you *think* you are seeing things. It doesnt make them real. I am all for enlightenment and experimentation but if this is enlightenment then so is erotic asphyxiation. What a joke.

  • @dmhorus oh wow, okay...maybe the movie is not made in your style i guess? can you be glad that i am thinking in an enlightening manner and not watching pop culture shit?? weirdos help the simple minded to reanalyze their thoughts. Someone must be the extreme, so that others can fall in between. to be honest, I want to trip. I get bored of seeing the same shit everyday. you can have your coffee every morning, ill smoke my weed and pop my shrooms and love life cuz i know whats right and wrong.

  • best movie ever!

  • is this the ending?

  • Yes.

  • I can't believe they didn't sue A-Ha for stealing this scene for their "Take on me" video

  • And i thought i was the only one to notice that, but i did enjoy the Aha video as well as this film

  • Hmm.. i just saw the entire movie (5 mins ago, the last scene).. fascinating.. creepy! The best for me, until now! Great ideas for the special effects..!

  • This is one of my favourite scenes from the movie. Eddie's sheer willpower brings himself and Emily out of wherever they've gone. Aces.

  • TAKE ON ME MOTHAFUCKA

  • william hurt vs. the monkey man

  • did'nt south park make fun of this

  • what about altered states 2:the final battle

  • I never seen this movie but I want too.

  • this video is one that has inspired A-HA for the clip TAKE ON ME !!!

very great to see this many thanks :) :)

  • did this just fuck up the movie for me? Ive never seen it

  • What if u decided to to drop acid and watch this movie?

  • ...it's a really bad idea. :P

  • lol

  • Well, mainly what I meant is that watching this movie at home on a DVD player cannot in any way compare to seeing it with a theatre full of people. I did catch it during its initial release in 1981 but not with college-age people, and from what I can vaguely remember of the audience's lack of reaction I think they were more bewildered than anything else.

  • The hallway scene here was referenced at the end of the "Take On Me" music video by A-Ha. Somebody ought to create a fan music video of "Altered States" set A-Ha's "Take On Me" song, ending with this scene. ; )

I love the Oscar-nominated score by John Corigliano in this scene, BTW.

  • The tragedy here is that many of you will never know just what it's like to experience this film in a movie theater - full of college-age people in the early 1980's.

  • I think I know what you're getting at. Nobody makes films like these anymore, as the films put out these days aren't as good as the ones put out those days, that going to movies is not as fun as it used to be, and I can't put my finger on what it was that made these films so good and what it is about the current films that makes them not as good.

  • I can: C...G....I

  • no computer of the world can make animations that look so shocking real nowadays

  • luckily a movie made before the reagan years: blasphemous hallucinations, freaky transformations, great naked asses and a thought provoking theme

gotta get my hands on this flick

  • I reamed her good!LOL,great movie!

  • Man, Blair Brown has an amazing ass. Can you imagine banging that hot tomale from behind!?! Oh yeah, good film too.

  • This was the final scene when William Hurt hit both of these walls in the film!

  • So THAT'S where that scene from South Park comes from...

  • woah south park had a scene like this in it?

    what episode was that?

  • It was the episode called "Tsst" where Cartman destroys all the nannies, forcing his mom the hire the Dog Whisperer.

  • one of my fav actors is william hurt

  • And Isn't that what life's all about anyway?.......THE TORMENT OF EXISTENCE WEIGHED AGAINST THE HORROR OF NON-BEING.

  • Wait, isn't that the title of one of Calvin's "Snow Art" sculptures?

  • dlweiss: Yes indeed. I find it stupefyingly astonishing, or maybe astonishingly stupefying, that anyone would remember that fact from a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon strip from the winter of, I believe, 1995 to 1996. But wait; Maybe you came across it in one of those "best of" compilations. Kudos all the same to you for unearthing my comment from two months ago and recognizing the reference.

  • One of Ken's BEST flix!!!! Mind-bustin' stuff for the 'conservative' 80's!"!

  • That visual cacophony was the biggest mind-f**k I've ever seen. I think I need to watch this movie now. Thank you.

  • This movie was always a classic to watch between my friends and I, back in high school.

Of course, we'd only watch with with some special "enhancement" if you get my drift ;)

  • Take on me. TAKE ON ME!

  • It's clobberin' time

  • i actually watched this when i was a kid, it scared me.

  • the atoms that make up our minds were the same atoms that were present at the big bang, in non-violation of the laws of thermodynamics. So why couldn't we regress to remembering the beginnings?

  • atoms are just lego bricks. your freind has lend you them but hasnt told you what he previously build, can you work out and build what he built?

  • you're suggesting the existence of a "memory sequence of itself"?

  • Cheesy nothing! Do you have any idea how many movies were made all throughout the '90s that looked FAR worse?

  • Blair Brown had a nice ass.

  • yes she sure does lol

  • One of the most underrated '80s movies.

    Thanks for posting. :)

  • South Park did a parody on this scene. It's pretty cool.

  • The book was great, the movies great!

  • taaaake oooon meeeeee

    take

    on me

    taaaake meeeee ooooon

    take

    on me

wow she does have a nice ass.

  • This is a crazy clip! I loved that movie and the little ape dude (without giving away too much). These effects are just as great as they are crappy.. I can certainly appreciate that. Hey, and a booty shot at the end! haha

  • Trivia: This was the inspiration for the ending in the "Take On Me" music video by a-Ha.

  • "Cheesy 80's video effects", my ass - the special effects were groundbreaking. NEW effects were created for this movie; no-one had ever done them before. One example: bright flashes of light were followed subliminal frames that tricked your eye into thinking the light was brighter than it could be from a movie screen. It's unfortunate that this clip is so washed out: you miss out on the beautiful color of the transformations, and Blair Brown has a great ass!

Rent it, buy it, but see it!

  • ....wow!!!

  • Final scene from this amazing movie. Worth watching.

  • do you have the rest of the movie??

  • whoas
