I must admit I thought all muslims were enemies of America and lumped them all together.Especially after 911.I think only other muslims can identify the bad apples and sort them out.I can't tell one from another.It's tragic the peaceful democratic muslims have to suffer twice.Once from the radical elements using them for cover and again from stupid Americans like me who don't understand. Throw in classes on women's studies, and the struggle for civil rights. Give students the vocabulary and education needed understand the value of liberty, what democracy means, how it protects our rights to practice religion, how it allows people of any background to succeed in the USA.

Specifically speaking of our muslim communities - this would help give people the tools to not be fooled by slogans like Islam and democracy are not compatible.

One thing I have noticed many times it that we have many university students coming from abroad that focus on the hard sciences like medicine or engineering. Why are the universities not requiring all foreign students to take at least 1 or 2 courses in civil society? continue next post

Would it not be sensible for all foreign students - not just muslims but all - (as we assume many will return to their countries) to have a basic understanding of how American government works, comparative political systems and an introduction to international relations?

If these students ultimately stay in the USA, a basic understanding will help them to become informed participants in civil society. Actually - all students foreign or not should have this.
