  • I would have liked to have seen how the 147gr HST compared to the other two rounds. Is the HST and better than the tried and true Hydra Shok? Does the 147gr HST stack up against it's sibling in 124gr? I guess we will never know........

  • this is a good defense round no mistake,i saw one comment on old bullet style, there is really no such thing,HST round is a great round however i love the hydrashock ive carried it for twenty years or more and ive been known to carry the old silver tips in my 380, my point is if it works it works, im sure the HST will be around for a long time to come, very impressive performance..

  • You've read the terminal ballistics page on wikipedia.

  • Why is it 147 gr instead of 148 gr. I could never figure that out.

  • @556suppressor Maybe if it was 148, people would asking why not 149? I like the weight and velocity of 147 myself.

  • Wow this is the only video on YT demonstrating the 147gr. That's sad.

  • I have some Federal "Hi-Shock" 9mm that I carry. Is that a good SD round? Whats the differense in the 115 Grn VS the 147 Grn.? Which would be better for Self Defense? Thanks

  • Thanks tnoutdoors9. Seeing is believing. I'm switching my carry loads from Speer Gold Dot 124g +P to Federal HST 147g+P

I look forward to seeing if there is considerable more recoil out of my G26. Hope not. Hope it won't wind up feeling like the G27! lol

This seems like the perfect SD round for 9mm.

  • @rogermcgee1

HST 147 9mm does fine. No need for +P, just putting more recoil on yourself.

  • I had always heard that for stopping power you want the bullet to stop in your target.

You want the energy to be displaced in the target rather than pass right through - more damage and as we can see from this video, that 147gr. bullet can do the job perfectly.

thank you for such a thorough example.

  • I will be testing this exact load through my new EMP. I hope it feeds as I really like what I am seeing and reading about the HST in 147gr.

  • That's impressive, it expanded wider than the 40 S&W 180 grain... Although the 180 grain is also traveling about 1000 fps and weighs much more so more penetration and stopping power

  • that expansion is scary..

you double tap someone with that and its gonna mess em up!

  • very informative......thanks

  • whoa momma

  • what do you think is best 9mm jhp ammo for taurus pt 809?

  • hjgyu

  • Awesome vid. I'm picking up a Ruger LC9 as soon as they come out. I think the HST will be my round of choice.

  • Your advice would be appreciated.

I am stocking up because of potential CA ammo regulations for pistols (currently blocked as ruled unconstitutional). I want to get the best.

    Thank you.

  • Is your top tester for 9mm still 147 HST Federal? I just bought 50. And a box of 50 124 HST +P.

Also that Win NATO practice round, FMJ 124. All after watching your work. A commission % should be yours!!!

Ammuntion to go sold me 9BP as BPLE. I was quite bummed. Is the lower velocity of any concern? I've read police use both kinds (and +P+ too).

  • Ammunition To Go

  • Have you done a Kinetic test with the JHP bullet? that would be interesting an FMJ vs a HP test

  • Having a hard time finding these availible on the internet, does anyone know a site that even has them?

  • you have a nice deck, why're you firing at it?

  • @titbits17

Must be the camera angle, I worked on this for too many weeks to be shooting it!

  • You seem very knowledgable on self defense ammunition, perhaps you can educate me. What's the purpose of the post in the Hydrashok round?

  • @LupisLupine

The post in the Hydra Shock is to provide equal expansion of the bullet at LOW velocities. I't interesting to note that they fail miserably in denim or clothing tests.

  • @kenyata

Actually, in many tests it is the desired minimum.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Excellent work on all of your videos. I know why you use newspaper and water. Mixing up 10% geletin is very hard to do and is a genuine pain in the ***. That being said, I'll take your tests in water/newspaper jugs over most other people gel tests. Your findings mirror my own tests in 5 gallon water jugs with 4 layers of denim. Keep up the good work!!!

  • @tnoutdoors9 12 inches is not too much. "12.5-14 inches is ideal." -Dr. Martin Fackler and IWBA. FBI's penetration requirement stands at 12-18 inches.

  • @kenyata thats not what she said

  • @kenyata

The FBI doesn't think so...But you're probably more credible since you're the type who doesn't even take a minute to proof-read, and then correct the multiple errors of your six-word post (or fragment).

  • @kenyata "12 inchess is to much penetration" as 1 foot is to much expansion.

  • @kenyata its only 12 in flesh , some bones will probly help it stop

  • @kenyata thats what she sed

  • why are they soon to be famous jugs????

  • I think HydraShoks are outdated I wouldnt carry them unless I couldnt get some of the more modern rounds. Same with Golden Saber (but they do have a new bonded GS). I just switched from Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P and ordered a few boxes of the HST 147gr +P.

Any chance of a test of the 147gr +P? Its hard to find info on the +P version, while the regular pressure 147gr seems to get all the attention.

Boy this stuff is hard to find though!

  • @StaKind85

I bought these couple of years ago, and no luck on finding the +P. Will test if I do find, as I would consider using it for carry.

  • @tnoutdoors9 I got mine from ammotogo.

  • @tnoutdoors9 gold dots or the federal hsts? what ones to buy please let me know? thanks love you videos i to own 2 g19s. loved my first one so much. i got my other one a week later lol.

  • @tnoutdoors9 I know of a place where you can order the 147+P HST, last I saw they still had 70 boxes of it available according to their inventory.

If you're interested in purchasing some send me a PM and I'll happily give you the link.

  • @tnoutdoors9 I have the +P 147 HST. Got them off gun broker.

  • @tnoutdoors9

Streicher's has/had the 147 gr +P --- I placed my order in February 2010 and it shipped on December 23. And, yes, like an idiot I only ordered one box.

  • @tnoutdoors9

Streicher's has/had the 147gr +P. I placed my order in February 2010 and it shipped on December 23, 2010 !. And, yes, like an idiot I only ordered one box.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Kyle's Gun Shop has the +P and standard pressure 147 grain HSTs in stock, I just bought a couple boxes of the standard 147 grain HSTs based largely on this video and some law enforcement ballistic test reports I read. Thanks for another great video.

  • @tnoutdoors9

Kyle's gunshop online has them :)

  • That media looks so nasty in HD! :)

  • tnoutdoors9, any chance of testing the Federal HST 9mm 147gr +P LE P9HST4 ? I'd like to see what the +P version of this round does.

  • Am wondering if a 147gr. load like this would be a good load for a Taurus Slim 9mm? I'm looking at a shorter barrel, then. Or would Hornady Critical defense work better? Also interested in the fast 100gr. load you had which travelled at over 1400fps and had a piece of plastic in the nose (I forget the maker).

  • @baccusboy Curious myself. I own a Taurus 24/7 Pro Compact Pistol. Very comfortable grip. I also heard that the 147 gr. round isn't that good, because it causes gun jam. My pistol probably needs to be broken in some, I shoot 115 gr. FMJ and the gun tends to jam a little bit (the slide doent rest with the chasis after firing). Maybe a compact needs a littler GR. bullet. However I will experiment with 124, 115, or a lighter gr. if its available just to see for myself.

  • The FBI has cleared more 147 gr BONDED 9mm loads than any other load, because it penetrates more than 12 inches and less than 18 inches, and the 147 gr actually pedals out better because instead of "exploding" on impact it expands on impact, if anybodys interested i can actually provide an entire webpage on different loads and how they perform compared to other loads and how the 9mm, .40, .45, and .357 sig compare to each other anybody whos interested just message me and i will provide the link

  • If the standard pressure 147grn hst's perform this well, i wonder what the 147grn +p hst's will do. Part # for the 147grn+p's are P9HST4

  • @vabch82 I am wanting to know how the 147 +P do as well!!!

  • Holy expansion batman.

  • I like that test medium better than just a jug of water. I think it to be closer to flesh and clothing.

  • Great

  • what is your personal self defense round?

  • @eamonher

    This....the 124+P Gold Dot, and 147 HST....std pressure.

  • how do you feel about the federal hydrashoks 147gr. vs hst 147gr.,i carry hydrashok and i love it but a guy at a gun shop claimd its outdated and needs to siece production but i love it alot and feel hes a tool.

  • @O4jampO4

I have a box of these and will probably test at some point...just out of curiosity and maybe or maybe not confirm some folks opinions of it.

  • @tnoutdoors9 you've been saying you will test the basic hydra-shoks for some time now good sir!!!....lol j/k but i for one would love to see the demo since i too carry the 147gHS...thx T9

  • @O4jampO4 the guy at the gun store is probably right, not saying the hydra-shok is awful but the HST is a much better round especially in that bullet weight

  • @O4jampO4 hydra shok is just fine ask him if its out dated to let u shoot him with it i bet he dont lol its just fine dont worry about what he says

  • @O4jampO4 every video i have seen of hydrashock round has yielded terrible results u can find them on here andreleger2001 also does good videos on here about performance of rounds

  • tnoutdoors9, in your opinion, how do you feel these 147 grain HST will do out of the shorter barrel of a Glock 26?

  • @assmunch01

When I carried a G26, I had a tendency to shy away from the 147 due to it's velocity. However, this HST is one of the hottest 147's I've seen, other than DoubleTap, and I would not have any issues carrying. Slightly less expansion in this load isn't a bad thing.

  • just wondering if you've ever had any issues with ANY ammo loading in your G19... thanks

  • @laxstar21

Yes, years ago, some CorBon 125 gr JHP......jammed on the feed ramp.

  • Thanks good to know

  • thank you for sharing this

  • expansion to 3/4 of an inch on a 9mm is a big bullet.

  • That's some impressive expansion for a 9mm! WOW

  • It is the best expansion I have ever seen on a 147 gr 9mm. Which might explain why everyone seeks it out, and it's very difficult to locate. I am trying not to shoot what I have remaining.

  • excelent results. Thank you for taking the time to test so many loads for us, helping us make informed choices at the ammo counter. This would be a good replacement for the subpar 147g white box jhps my wife WAS using. :-)

  • the expanded round would make a sick necklace lol

  • @ AHTSvideo

LOL I just said the same thing about the 147 gr in a response on the 124 gr HST video.

  • 1000fps is still faster than most 45acp loads..........

  • Remember, kinetic energy = .5 m v^2

So I think velocity is more important.

  • The problem is the smaller mass transfers less of the KE. You want to be able to dump all the energy and stop the bullet instead of having it carry high KE after it exits

  • Thanks for the reply will be looking forward to it. Your videos are very informative and very well done

  • wow that's pretty

  • this round is so hard to find here! What do you think of the Remington 147 grain jhp golden sabers??

  • @ 24rb12345

I have some and will be testing, likely March 2010.

  • I know what round is going in my 92FS for home defense!

    Great video!

  • hi tnoutdoors.great vid.did this 147gr hst penetrated 12 1/2 inches?

  • Yes, 12 to 12.5.

  • @tnoutdoors9

thanks for the fast reply.pls if you have time pls test also the hst 155gr.great videos.

  • tn great video Im looking at these in .40 any good? I had another question I did this kind of test(tried to) to try to see the expansion of the remington UMC round in 40s&w. Well I used 3 protein powder buckets measuring 8.5 in in diameter 25.5in total with four layer of demin in the front I didn't put any news paper just water, and the round went straight through is this enough to assume that it didn't expand? Or do i need the news paper? That pretty much what i can find here, UMCs

  • Yeah, you probably should try some media. I have posted some .40 tests, not certain if you saw those. The 180 gr HST looks really good.

  • yeah as a matter of fact i've seen all your videos, good job! The HST looks good I just can't find them. Any ideas on a good place to buy ammo on the web? I would be buying a good amount of ammo maybe with free shipping?

  • now this is a good video. informative and well done. I have a box of the JHP HS, but @ 35 bucks a box its just too expensive, shoots well out of my glocks and is my primary self defense ammo.

  • I ordered 2 boxes from Streichers about 2 months ago now for 147gr. +P and they are still on backorder. Just an FYI for anyone what wanted to order a box of these. Great rounds just go ahead and place your order, kick back & wait!

  • the crazy thing is, if you have a .45 Auto with at least a 4" barrel, the .45 caliber HSTs will expand to about an inch around, and maintain that same flower shape in this video. Amazing rounds. I'd love to see how they work out of a .357 sig.

  • hey tennessee outdoors!...big fan of your videos...nice work and very informative...i've been researching top performing 9mm hollow points on the market and have noticed that the Winchester Ranger LE 147gr T-Series are gaining some popularity...just wanted to know, will that be on your list to be tested soon? please let me know.

  • I did a test on the Ranger Bonded. Yes, looking for more Ranger-T's to test, but cannot give a specific timeine right now. 9mm tests will pick-up again early 2010.

  • gosh~ that bullet sends chills down my spine... looks like a star-shaped devil face.

you dont wanna get hit with one of those...

  • Hello tnoutdoors9: I have found a new load from Winchester, is called SXZ9 Personal Protection, it is in 9mm JHP 115grains, could you please test it? I cannot find any other data other than the limited in the internet, it is for security carry ammo, by the way, I'm very satisfied with the objectivity of your videos, I enjoy watching them.

  • If I can find it, it's on the list. That's a new round for me.

  • what specific round would you recommend for every day carry self defense? 9mm (brand, grain, etc)

  • Great videos, keep it up! Subscribed

  • Does anyone know of a place that is selling these?? - It's actually impressive how much different the 147gr round is working out than the lighter loads. The expansion and overall stats of the 147 is much better and lighter weighs are showing a lot of bullet fragmentation or separation from the jacket. I currently use Ranger 127gr +p+ and am so impressed with the 147gr HST's that I want to switch to them but just can not seem to find them.

  • Seems they've completely disappeared from all internet sources I know of nearly a year ago. I made sure to order what I could before Obama got into office and the hoarding craze began. There was also a rumor that Federal would not longer be selling its LE type ammo to civilians and the only way to get a hold of them was an LE dealer that had overstock, how much truth to this, i have no idea.

    Good Luck finding some.

Luckily I at least got a hold of 2 boxes of 147 and 2 of 124

  • I also heard the rumor about Federal restricting sales. Can't find it anywhere, and my local dealers never stocked it. I don't have much left; when it's gone, probably no more HST for me.

  • Dec. 09 - one of my subscribers just found some online at Streichers.

  • too bad these aren't available in Norway.

    I want a sub-sonic bullet that delivers a punch

  • seems to have performed better than the 147 gr gold dot

  • I agree, and I was surprised by the results of both rounds.

  • Finally a decent video! Was getting a little tired of watching what hollow points can do to fruit! I'm still waiting to see a hollow point video that's used on a larger dead or alive animal! We need a comparison between a full heads vs. hollow points on larger animals' flesh and organs! I'm all for self defense!

  • at the end I would say ouch. I wouldn't want that in me

  • Im buying a Glock 19 soon for my CCW, what round would you suggest I carry in it?

  • This cartridge or Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P are my first choices. Other good rounds are Remington Golden Saber Bonded 124 gr +P, Winchester Ranger, Winchester Bonded, CorBon. Any JHP is better than nothing if you cannot find these loads.

  • can someone tell me wat the grain means in a bullet! can you fill the bullet shell up full with gunpowder and whats more powerfull,a 7.62 or a .308?

  • Grain is = to bullet weight not amount of powder. There are 7000 grains per pound. So a 230 gr. .45 ACP is roughly 1/2 of an ounce. 7.62 is a military round and a .308 is a civvy round. 7.62x54 is a higher pressure round thereby being more powerful.

  • thankyou for the info!

  • grain is just a unit of measuring weight, like a 17hmr bullet weighs about 20 grains, a .223 weighs about 60, or you can do a .50 BMG, which weighs areong 650 grains, avoid getting shot with one of those, lol. and as far as your other question your .308 is probably more powerful, its more of a long range bullet and has a higher velocity, the 7.62 i believe is your AK47 round, still very nasty though, hope this helped

  • yes! thanks very much!

  • Does 147 gr. 9mm have a better knock down power than 115 gr. or 124 gr. 9mm?Slower velocity and heavier bullet.Kind of like the ballistic of the .45 caliber.Heavy grain(230)and slow velocity(about 880 fps). Also,a box of 147 gr. 9mm is alittle more than the other two grains.

  • Carry the hydroshock for 9mm at your own risk. You might as well be carrying a full metal jacket round.

  • I'm actually glad you mentioned this, as it gives me some motivation to test this load and compare to the design of the HST. I'll add that to my growing list for testing.

  • The reason I say this is that my dept. used to use the 9mm hydroshock until a shooting that took place. The bad guy took 2 rounds to the shirt pocket area. The 2 hydroshock never expanded - they zipped through him and ended up in a closet. I imagine that the bullets do well in gelatin, maybe even wet newspaper - but they didn't do well in the bad guy. We switched to the .40 cal using Speer gold dot not too long after that.

  • Hydroshok and HST are NOT the same thing.

  • Yeah, he showed us the 3 bullets in the video, I was just referring to the hydroshock.

  • Fantastic video. I was watching MidWay USA and noted on Larry Potterfields knockdown power chart that the 147 grain 9mm outperformed standard 45ACP bullets. Now that is impressive, particularly when you consider easy of shooting, the ammount of ammo you can carry and your ability to conceal the smaller Glock compact guns with ease.

  • Cool video. Those HST rounds are amazing. As a proud employee of Federal Cartridge there is probably a good chance that I made the round that was fired in this video.

  • You done good! Thanks for finding the video and your comment. Really nice to hear from someone at Federal. Spread the word!

  • in modern hollowpoints i actually believe the 147s are more likely to expand most of the top designs in this weight have very large hollowpoint cavity that is harder to "plug up" as some of the lighter bullets, i like 124+p

  • The 147's are definitely better than 20 years ago. I usually get consistent expansion from the 124's and even 115's, but it really depends on the media. You could shoot any JHP into wood and it may not expand at all.

  • Very good video...as the proud owner of a new auto, I am trying to decide on what type of ammo to carry and you have definitely helped me out

    Thanks!

  • WOW....I may look into getting a few boxes for myself!

  • That is a beautiful result! I think I will be purchasing some of these in 45 auto for my Glock 30sf.

  • what a weird brand name , federal o.O

  • Federal Ammunition makes some very good products.

  • Really great video, I've subscribed and am going to check out the rest of them. Thanks for sharing!

  • Which round do you perfer the HST 147gr or the HST 124gr +p? I can't decide.

  • Between these two, the 147. However, I also have a preference for bonded bullets in 124 +P.

  • Great video and explanation!

Like the jugs with wet paper inside, more reliable than just plain water..

    The mushroom is AWESOME!

  • Does subsonic mean the round is faster or weaker than the +p round????????

  • Comment removed

  • Subsonic is below the speed of sound, which is roughly around 1100 feet per second, therefore slower than the 9mm +P. Subsonic doesn't necessarily mean weaker, whether that's a 9mm, .45, etc. There are benefits to subsonic rounds, which is a point of debate. Alot of people swear by the .45 ACP, which is most definitely subsonic...and below 900 fps in many cases. But it's a big freaking bullet with street and military credentials. Pure physics....on so many levels.

  • nice!

  • you can't find any HST ammo out there in any calibers right now with the ammo shortage & hording, if anyone has a web site that has HST ammo available & in stock i would appreciate it

  • I hear you loud and clear. I bought these in late 2007 from Streichers. My local dealers never had them on the shelf.

  • When talking about HST or the Ranger T lines of ammo the 147 grain out preforms the light loads. It penetrates more and stays together better while maintaining similar expansion. When you factor in that it's easier to control during rapid fire and causes less ware on the weapon there is really no reason to use the lighter +P or +P+ rounds unless you need the extra pressure for reliable cycling in your firearm.

  • you should of got paid for this cause you just pretty much got me to buy those bullets

  • Thanks for posting, I also read your post on GT too!!!!!

  • This round is really amazing. From all the data I have seen the only round that can possibly hold a candle to it in 9mm is the 127 +P+ Winchester Ranger Talons, but then it's really all about weight preference. For pure expansion the 147 HST 9mm outperforms most top of the line 40 and 45 defense loads from other manufacturers. Federal really got it right with this one.

  • Thanks for putting this together!

I only carry 147gr and have been using Hydra-Shoks. Wish I can find HSTs!

BTW, I read your thread on GT!

  • Well done - great demonstration, but don't you realize that a bullet like that could HURT somebody?

  • Absolutely! I dropped a box of these on my bare foot this morning and it hurt like crap!

  • Thats the hall point of a GOOD DEFENSE AMMO. To STOP and make enough punch and damage in a burglar. intruder trying to hurt or kill you, or your family!!

  • Very well done!

  • Cool vid Wouldn't want to get hit by that.

  • Excellent job! Very well made. I'm going to have to try that newspaper in jugs thing.
