GM is about to become again world leader in sales, almost tripling Toyota in China. Why the largest US auto facilities are not in Michigan but in Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, etc? Why companies like Caterpilar are hiring most new people overseas, even reporting record revenue and profit? Why anti-business populism is so strong in the Great Lakes region (still the industrial heart of America)?
Every buisiness wants independance from government regulation, untill something untowards effects them, eg flood, hurricane, then they bay for assistance or funds to keep their heads above water, they crave cash but will embrace socialist ideals when their world collapses, good to see some social responsibility from the government rather than the self indulgent grabs from the private sector.

GM's problems were several. Product duplication, getting away from it core business, ie hughes, eds, abusing its dealer base, being held hostage by UAW making its cost of labor higher than its competitors, an arrogance within its management, $4.00 gas which made its dependency on pickup's and suv's fatal, the Saturn division and buying Hummer and the biggest contributor GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS requiring it to manufactor vehicles which are not profitable just to meet CAFE standards.
I honestly hate GM, but lets give them a slight break in the fact that they are actually paying back their loan unlike Chrysler who won't be paying back their 7 billion dollar "loan".

all day I take calls from people complaining about GM vehicles and about 80 percent of the it boils down to they have over 100,000 miles, it's way too big of a vehicle for them to afford (gas) and they cant afford to pay for a repair. Just buy a car,, you dont need a pickup truck to drive to your office job and back everyday. I get people all the time saying they want new tires because their old ones were defective. Then they say the tires lasted 50K miles. yeah,, way defective dude.

I had to listen to a woman today explain to me how her 2001 oldsmobile with 260+ was always having problems, and that was why she would buy a Toyota...I asked her when she last changed her transfluid...she didn't know such a thing existed. Also some car companies hide problems by calling them regular maintenance I once say a 500 dollar routine maintenance fee on a 20k civic. What the hell did they fix?
yeah, its a pretty standard call but I still never get over them. I have 135 K on my gm vehicle with a bare minimum of any repairs needed. The thing could die tomorow and I'd still buy gm. GM has problems with steering wheels coming off, steering columns coming apart, steering knuckles coming apart, gas tanks falling off, problems with fires on a HUGE range of models, problems with drive wheels locking up, the list goes on and on. Almost all of the GM brands are below the industry average on the JD Power IQS and VDS lists. GM sucks, they have for decades.

Japanese cars typically get better fuel mileage, have fewer problems and have higher resale values, all of those things add up to make Japanese cars a better investment than the junk from GM or Chrysler. Also, there are 5 Hondas and 2 Nissans that have been in my family for years, NONE of them have ever had a single problem, EVER.

And yes, there are a few American cars from the 70s and earlier on the road, that is when American cars were built to last. Though, I've never seen a high mileage American car from those years, so it seems that they can stand the years but not the miles. There are plenty of Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s on the road, but there are almost no American cars from those years on the road.

Duh, my issue is with the problems that GM and Chrysler have relative to other companies.
On the head gasket issue: I've seen a Civic with a blown head gasket, the thing was 20 years old, had well over 200,000 miles on it, the owner admitted to rarely changing the oil and it had been run out of coolant. Takes a lot of abuse to make that happen as far as I can tell.

I work in a Tier 1 auto supply manufacturer, and we sell to multiple automakers, so I aware of the US auto industry. I don't remember seeing any of your claims. Perhaps your lying?

The Hummers DID have gas tanks that fell off, the Pontiacs DID start homes on fire (17, to be exact), steering wheels DID fall off of Cruzes (watch?v=f2_b4V6C4aM), steering columns DID come apart on Cadillacs, drive wheels DID lock up on the Skys and Solstices. All of these things happened, you just have your head too far up your ass to accept it.

all day I take calls from people complaining about GM vehicles and about 80 percent of the it boils down to they have over 100,000 miles, it's way too big of a vehicle for them to afford (gas) and they cant afford to pay for a repair. Just buy a car,, you dont need a pickup truck to drive to your office job and back everyday. I get people all the time saying they want new tires because their old ones were defective. Then they say the tires lasted 50K miles. yeah,, way defective dude.

I had to listen to a woman today explain to me how her 2001 oldsmobile with 260+ was always having problems, and that was why she would buy a Toyota...I asked her when she last changed her transfluid...she didn't know such a thing existed. Also some car companies hide problems by calling them regular maintenance I once say a 500 dollar routine maintenance fee on a 20k civic. What the hell did they fix?

GM has problems with steering wheels coming off, steering columns coming apart, steering knuckles coming apart, gas tanks falling off, problems with fires on a HUGE range of models, problems with drive wheels locking up, the list goes on and on. Almost all of the GM brands are below the industry average on the JD Power IQS and VDS lists. GM sucks, they have for decades.

And yes, there are a few American cars from the 70s and earlier on the road, that is when American cars were built to last. Though, I've never seen a high mileage American car from those years, so it seems that they can stand the years but not the miles. There are plenty of Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s on the road, but there are almost no American cars from those years on the road.

On the head gasket issue: I've seen a Civic with a blown head gasket, the thing was 20 years old, had well over 200,000 miles on it, the owner admitted to rarely changing the oil and it had been run out of coolant. Takes a lot of abuse to make that happen as far as I can tell.

What Mike proposed, since we own GM, is that we need to order GM to start building green machines; light rail, buses, wind turbines, electric cars, etc..
Since Wall St. produces no products we should take back their HUGE bailout money and use it to provide single payer health care and the build up the infrastructure of it; hospitals and clinics and offer free college to nurses, technicians, and doctors.
