thanks for this review but could you change the description about the ubuntu bit as that did initially scare me off the laptop. And it seems newer versions work. Thanks again ;)
hey , i got a similar one yesterday for xmas. its an intel core duo lenovo Z61m think pad model thats has vista. Do u know if my mines has a built in bluetooth?
with ubuntu, i could not download/install anything software. i could connect to the net, but it would refuse to get softwares. there is a fix for it. but im not familiar with linux at all.
there is no option for webcam with lenovo's business laptops. if u want webcams built in, lenovo Y or U series have them. i especially like the Lenovo U330!
I am running Linux Mint on this (a variant of Ubuntu). Works beautifully. All the lenovo buttons like sound level and even the little light on top of the screen work straight away. connected on wireless as well as 3 UK mobile broadband. I am extremely happy with the results!
I have a serious heating problem on the right hand side of the palm rest. I read that it's because of the WIFI adapter installed under it. I just bought it last month (August 2008) and I am kind of disappointing with this problem. Do you have any recommendation or do you have any information how to minimize the heat from the WIFI adapter?
Are there any heating problems on this laptop?I can't wait to dump this old 8 pound Toshiba....I am debating between a Macbook or an IBM. So, folks any opinions abt Mac will be appreciated too. Thank you for your review.
It depends what you do. If you do video editing or Audio editing or any media stuff, I'd get the Mac. IF the IBM is cheaper or you need a PC, get the IBM.
Thanks for sharing your comments. I did find a 12 inch IBM x30 for like 300 bucks, used but very well kept. Found out that for Mac's i had to buy their retail version of Office and some other softwares. Was not looking forward to spend that kinda money on just the softwares. So, i went for a PC and with a 50 bucks for an original copy of Office 2007 with student discount from campus, i got meself a decent portable machine under 3.7 pounds..But boy what a project it was deciding b/w these brands?
I thought u were kidding with the price but i see on the Lenovo site that it currently is around $1000 on sale. The reason is because in Europe the price is twice as high and i was getting a GOOD DEAL!
if im in the library, i can barely hear the fan. when im alone in the room at midnight, then occasionally i can hear the fan comes on. its not silent. but it's quieter than other laptops.
as for heating, i guess its not hot enough for me to notice discomfort.
ive had both the macbook and the lenovo. macbook was ok but osx is pretty much useless. when people saw the lenovo they were amazed. i personally don't like vista or osx. the lenovo would be good if vista wasn't so large.
installation was smooth. but additional tweaks are needed to get it working. for some reason, i was not able to install codecs to play mp3s. i wasnt able to install additional softwares. others have this problem also. there are instructions on how to get around this problem, but it was way over my newbie's comprehension.
How is the screen brightness?

i like x300 however my ideal laptop would be 15.4 inch,
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
4GB DDR2 System Memory
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth
160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive + optical drive
and not thicker than think pad x300.
Can Lenovo do that???? hope they can, and let it be a think pad spill resistant + a track point, and let it be a tablet with wacom touch screen!!!!!!
that is my ideal computer
and is not here yet...:(
