Like they have to go through snow and work like everyday.

They are high up so can go through flood too.

@Gutsyndicate You would spend more money that way because you'd have to run more routes because of the decrease in capacity. Most school buses get anywhere from 5 -7 mpg - this can be good and bad because, yes, it is a lot of gas, but think of all the gas the parents of the 60 kids that are on that bus are saving.

Do these School Buses have more safety features than other types of Buses like Public buses, Tour Coaches etc? Is it more economical to build all US School Buses from 1 facility?

@nautLittle Yes on safety. And ALL US buses are made from 3 factories, Blue Bird, IC and Thomas. Those are the last 3 big names in the industry.

@nautLittle school buses have many extra safety features that you wouldnt find on a regular bus such as lights and reflectors. School buses are also built much stronger than normal vehicles and buses. Most buses such as greyhound and city transit buses bodies are made mainly out of fiberglass, school buses are made mainly of steel.

@TonyFirelli They break and wear out, just like every other vehicle. New buses are also safer and cleaner.

@TonyFirelli some school districts lease their buses. like the district next to us, last year they had Thomas built buses (really odd looking) and now this year they have new IC CE300's... our district however buys them and runs them to the ground :)

@TonyFirelli The reason we need new ones is because the government passed a law saying that we could only operate one till it is 15 years old. I had a 1994 blue bird last year with 58k miles on it and had to get rid of it and buy a brand new one because of that ignorant law. we have airplanes in the sky that are over 40 years old and yet we have to ground a 15 year old school bus. what a crock at 100k every 15 years!

haha I used to work a the Tulsa Bus Plant. My best friends father, Grant Pick, is the Plant Manager. I only made it a few days before I quit, it was hard work...Too hard for me man.

Well it's not easy. You have to wear ear plugs and ear muffs because it's so loud. You work 10 hour shifts. And it depends on which area you work in. They had me making the walls for the busses, which we had to have a wall built every 7 minutes, and it sucked. I had blisters from drilling constantly and got burnt from welders working directly above me. It's not easy work.
