It helps to use a super thick pick when trying to play this style. It's more about the picking hand then the actual fret hand. The fret hand bascially just hammers on the bass note while the right hand does the rest.

Takes some finger strength, but the barred hammer-ons are just flippin awesome once you get the hang of it. Also, he has a tony rice kind of thing where he does the same thing as an arpeggio, if you listen to his earlier stuff.
