I'm sure you Aussies think our US trains are overly noisey, but your trains blow their horn only once for a crossing and at a considerable distance away such that someone inside an air conditioned car with the windows up could not possibly hear that horn. The US requires two long, one short and one long blast on the horn that last one sounded when the locomotive is less than 100 feet from/right on top of the crossing.
How 'bout enlightenin' this Yank? What say ya, mate?
@ChamplainDivision In my state the rule is once at the whistle board and once before the crossing with repetition, duration and intensity according to conditions and circumstances. The number of 'hits' you guys get proves that the - - . - is a waste of time and compressed air and is there for legal reasons more than usefulness. The more you use it the more it becomes background noise that people become accustomed to. If it was rare to hear one people might stop and think.
