  • Joy Division?

  • @SplinterFTW Interpol

  • Bass is out of tune it sounds like to me. The notes on the lower string are flat

  • @kingsfan1991 I hear some similarities in the lead singers voice but your right about the bands sounding nothing alike.

  • They don't sound too good here.

  • How can Paul sing out of tune? His singing voice is the kind people do as a joke impression. When singing like a robot it's near impossible to go out of tune.

  • @LoveStallion You don't really know what "in tune" means, do you?

  • the antics era was a lot darker

  • just enjoy the music you sad wankers

  • i fuckin love them

  • woot AWESOME recording...... not, this version ruins the song for me! (not really, me gusta's 'Interpol'

  • A lot of flat notes in this one. Shame, since it's a fantastic song. Off night I guess.

  • @EbolaZidane - Paul does occassionally hit a flat note, I noticed. :(

  • I like Interpol but I think that they will never be a great band because they aren't original in the slightest, like the vast majority of post punk revival bands

  • @UpTheBracket420 I agree, post punk is for the wind, along with Obsticle 1!

  • incomparable

  • interpol incomperable

  • @prozacpeople I agree. I really like Daniel's the most.

  • Hooo before HD xD

  • Carlos d is a muvaliking g

  • It's really unnecessary for people to bag on Joy Division. Like many have said already, both Joy Division and Interpol are different bands. They're both INCREDIBLY awesome bands and that's all that matters.

  • they have been on letterman a lot haha

  • They played like shit here...

  • look their hair, the coolest i ever seen.

  • Ian Curtis was amazing...

  • This is BY FAR their weakest performance of this song. Ugh.

  • @CristoffandFriends Agree. It was not good at all. But the quality is kinda bad too.. lets not forget that.

  • OMG JUST STFU UP ALREADY! You guys sound like pussies with this shit. Enough with the JD comparisons. Just because Paul sings baritone(useless fact: I sing baritone also) like Ian Curtis doesn't mean him and Interpol are influenced by Joy Division. Even IF I mean IF they WERE influenced by JD they would never attempt to sound like them. Like this one time Paul said in an interview "I would never try sing like Kurt Cobain or Frank Black cause you just can't do it".

  • @greyreview I mean, JD influenced Interpol hehehehe

  • Hooray for studios!

  • god they sound booty ass hell ....but i love interpol

  • JD and interpol...hmmmmm.i don't know if one of the band influence the other.as far as i know, they are both great bands that penetrated the mainstream even Justin Gaybeir is dominating the mainstream in this genaration,.

  • JD and interpol...hmmmmm.i don't know if one of the band influence the other.as far as i know, they are both great bands that penetrated the mainstream even Justin Gaybeir is dominating the mainstream in this geanration,.

  • @MultiDimwit How can Interpol influence Joy division, Joy division finished in 1980

  • How is comparing Interpol to Joy Division a bad thing? Joy Division is one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time. It's a compliment really.

  • Sound a bit too much like joy division and editors to me...

  • @richbdd01

    Maybe Editors sound like Interpol...

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOO CARLOS D

  • You could chose many bands worse than Joy Division to emulate. Besides, this band is much more than a simple JD cover band. Interpol is cool. The reality is that critics parrot each other; one says Joy Division and the rest say, "oh, yeah!" and the mud rolls down their streets. This is a guitar based band with a cool drummer. Can't really say that about Joy Division.

  • Pauls Idol is Kurt Cobain not Ian Curtis

  • who the fukk cares if they sound a little like joy division, i hear the same stuff said about the editors too, so fukn what is it a bad thing, both bands are way better than joy division away

  • Dude, even if Interpol is influenced by Joy Division, so fucking what?! Everyone is influenced by someone else, & it's not like Interpol is making shitty music; It's brilliant. I love Ian Curtis & Joy Division, but Interpol is my most favorite band of the last fifteen years. Ian Curtis has been dead for 30.

  • that dummy does resemble paul

  • So Fucking Great!! Fuck joy division Interpol is the shit now..

  • ah, the good ol'e interpol vs joy division shtick. you guys know that paul banks is laughing at you and ian curtis is laughing at you from heaven?

  • Isn't this the same crap when Oasis hated on the Beattles as they proceeded to dress/act/etc. like the Beattles?? Gotta respect joy division & give credit where it's due.Nobody's saying Interpol is "copying" anybody. We just love what we love and that includes both of these great bands as well as other new-wave-ish bands like Pixies & the Smiths. If Interpol actuallly "hates" joy division & these bands that is pretty tacky & i just lost a little respect for them as people. Say it ain't so!

  • the only particular similarity between joy divison and interpol are the vocals, paul banks sounds identical to ian curtis. Joy divison were very unusual instrumentally using very distorted guitar and very high bass and cold synth sounds, interpol differs enormously instrumentally they use a lot reverb and delay and a very dominant rhythm section. They are both post punk bands, and i really like both of them, and wouldnt acuse interpol of ripping off JD.

  • paul is one of the few people who can sound just as good live as he can in studio versions. give some respect

  • Joy Division and Interpol definitely sound alike, I mean Paul's voice sounds alot like Ian's and they come close in genre but they're only influenced by them and there's no problem with that. I mean they're not trying to sound like them. Interpol has they're own sound and so did Joy Division. They're both great bands, different and unique in they're own ways. Love the video.

  • @kingsfan1991 I agree with you, but they are both definitely in the same genre

  • Damn Paul must have been pissed when he missed the first note (the only one he missed), cos they messed up a little first time on Letterman too.

  • I'm named after Ian Curtis (:

  • lol goofy dancing blasco

  • If you were not alive or bought an original vinyl record Lp when Joy division was around than please stop with the stupid fucking comparisons you morons. I wonder how many fans were opened to the fact that joy Division even existed because of Interpol?? Interpol has its own unique sound. Great band!!!

  • Espanol, por favor.

  • Why do people get mad when these guys are compared to JD.......That was one ACE of a Band...Very Under rated!! I wish this guy would cover Disorder from Joy Division!!

  • this songs its pretty awesome

  • This song is their opus

  • Comment removed

  • Quit with those comparisons you motherfuckers!

  • seriously they have there own style

  • & how can you even say that Joy Division is "sucky"....srsly?

  • way to beat the dead horse you unoriginal bastard, just enjoy the music or not..

  • interpol is better than joy division...at least for me...this guys are awesome...joy division it's a great band...but interpol is waaaay better...(please don't get mad)

  • I don't think he sounds exactly like him. Why? Because I hear a hint of Jim Morrison's voice in Ian's voice. Paul sounds more clear and robotic in a way.

  • Joy Division isn't "sucky."

  • You guys give me head aches

  • It's not a big no-no to compare interpol to other post-punk bands. I think what really gets on fans' nerves is lazy comparisons that have not been well thought out. On very few occasions Paul's baritone, which incidentally, is the choice tone for thousands of singers, sounds a little like Ian Curtis. Turn on the bright lights is a world away from Uknown pleasures and Closer. People can't seem to face up to the problem of catagorising Interpol. It's difficult because they're unique.

  • well i think its how the instruments interact that get them compared

  • @frenchkids I always felt The Doors mostly

  • @frenchkids Dude... Gimme a frickin' break. I saw Interpol open for U2 last night in St. Louis. I was 50 ft. from the stage, dead center. Unlike those around me, or so it seemed, I thought they was great.

I don't own any of their music, but have heard them many times in bars, from friends, in Virgin Records listening stations, etc, and I have to tell ya, to say they don't sound like Joy Division is absurd. Carlos D has claimed a direct line from Peter Hook's basslines to his own.

  • @rootbeerpies I respectfully disagree with absolutely everything you have said. I'm quite sure that you are not familiar with every singer in Western recorded music.

  • @frenchkids ...and as far as Paul's baritone... the guy is CHANNELING Ian Curtis. Baritone is the choice "for thousands of singers?" I can't argue on tonal positioning or the Eschatology of Lead Singers via their Choice of Oscillatory Modulating Frequencies, but I can tell you, based on my 42 years on the planet, that no one, as far as I know, in the history of Western recorded music, sounds as much like Ian Curtis as does Paul Banks! That doesn't mean they're bad, why deny it???

  • a bad day to play uh?

  • it is a little slower than the original version

  • No; it's not slower than the original version; it maybe seems like that because he is dragging out his voice a little more in between the chorus and verse...

  • the bass sounds a little slower than usual on this, just me?

  • I love Interpol. One of my favorite bands. But you guys are idiots if you don't think they ripped off Joy Division. I mean that's not necessarily a bad thing but to be insane to link JD to Interpol? You're just a dumbshit if you think that.

  • they are heavily influenced by Joy Division. Banks's voice is really similiar to Ians. The new british rock band White Lies are also influenced by Joy Division.

  • Re phrase rip off to inspire.

  • Carlos' Bass should be cranked for this

  • and who the fuck cares what joy division sings about...its nothing of what interpol sings of...i swear you have to be clearly insane to link Interpol any where with joy division...go watch sum joy videos if thats wat u into....`~honestly people (-.-)_I they arent Evil.... :p get it??????

  • god shut the fuck up about joy division....they had no clue who the fuck joy division was till they were working on thier second album....props or watever dues or owed to joy division...but they dead and long gone...sorry Joy fans

  • no joy division was a heavy influence on interpol. it doesnt mean interpol ripped off anyone it just means listening to different bands inspired interpol's sound. saying you pulled your band's sound out of thin air is like saying indie bands these days don't need to pay any respect to the beatles

  • Actually, Interpol has refuted that Joy Division had any influence on their music.

  • i meant indirect influences

  • So?, you don't Ian would be happy that the sound he helped create is still living on in the current post-punk revival... Would be a shame to have the scene die entirely.

  • Joy Division wasn't part of a scene which is why they were so brilliant. Their sound came out of nowhere and sounded like nothing before it. Ian lived what this band pretend to sing about.

  • I agree entirely. However, I would much rather listen to a band influenced by Joy Division; than lets say... Lady Gaga.

I also hear some Chameleons and a touch of Bauhaus on their other work.

  • Yeah I see what you mean, I also hear Kitchens of Distinction.

  • seriously!!!!! wtf!!!!! i dont watch letterman at all, im a conan guy. or even craig ferg. but nearly all my top bands have played letterman.....David...props, you got the best bands playing yur show...yu better know that :)

  • I've always wondered what chords Daniel uses in the verse (0:48-1:03). They're definitley not 5th chords and they sound kind of jazzy. Can anybody help me out?

  • I CAN'T get over how Sam's drum tones are always so tight. i saw the at the 930 club in DC about 6yrs ago and at the house of blues in Cleveland in '07... great live show. their sound is always really freakin good.

  • Daniel is such a badass

  • sirfik you're an idiot they're better live

  • ^ douche

  • sirfik is obviously fucking retarded.

  • mmm...his voice is so bizarre. Sounds like a recording from WWII. But maybe it`s just the sound quality. Still I love this song.

  • yeah its a unique tenor, very attractive to hear

  • He's baritone...

  • lol, yeah i knew that man, lol, i really did, made a mistake, oh well, sorry

  • very true. their debut album is so good though.

  • carlos dengler is awesome...

  • all the right ingredients but for some reason its crappy cliche.

  • Нет слов супер группа

  • I love the bassist

  • Great band, but this performance wasnt that good.

  • I think it's really good, Paul gives it his all (particularly near the end)... I think it's this video quality that isn't good.

  • Check his performance of the same song at Jay Leno it's much better.

  • The bassist is influenced by Joy Division bassist Peter Hook. Thats about it.

  • Does anyone know the guitar that paul is using?

  • Gibson Les Paul Custom

  • The one on Jools Holland is 99 times better

  • Interpol aren't influenced by Joy Division. As far as I'm concerned the singer /lyracist/ guitarist dislikes Joy division.

  • I really tried to come to liking Joy Division but I failed. Only 'Obstacle 1' reminds their stuff but merely.

  • Yeah I read about that somewhere. If you think they sound like Joy Division, maybe you're just not listening to Interpol records enough.

  • or maybe they dont know joy division at all

  • @Popdivision ahahah you drink whatever thing your idols says! if they are influeced by joy division where is the problem? their album are great until now!

  • @franco212 That's retarded, I don't have any idols because I'm Jewish, and I read somewhere that Paul dislikes Joy Division, I'm just saying because I hate it when people have the wrong idea about a band and/or person

  • @Popdivision interviews are the most useless thing....

  • @Popdivision yeah the are... if if wasnt for joy division these guys wouldnt exist

  • @sonnyjimsonnjim Don't forget that there were other post-punk bands around the exact same time as Joy Division, and if Interpol were influenced by Joy Division then why would they get irritated whenever an interviewer makes a comparison between them both?

  • @Popdivision that sucks for them... Joy Division is a great band.

  • @Popdivision - They SO do! Not a bad thing man :) Joy Division never dies so long as the spirit gets carried forward. Missing the obvious is so irritating. Interpol isn't iinfluenced by joy division?? Not true. That's why i liked them in the FIRST place & alos why they caught on among j.d. fans!! Interpol brings it -- good job guys! Keep ON with the comparisons - the Truth will set you free m.f.

  • @Popdivision your fucking deaf mate,

that's a brilliant way to show deafness, most of post-punk and alternative music is influenced by joy division, the smiths and the cure.

perhaps they didn't listen joy division wich leads to the fact they listened a band influenced by joy division

i mean c'mon just listen to any song from both, the structure when they write is the same

  • @Popdivision Give it up people, Interpol sounds nothing like that shitty Joy Division band.

  • @Popdivision Well Carlos is most definitely influenced by Joy Division

  • @LouReedsBooks I can definitely see where you're coming from but I remember when I learned the bass riff from "5 (get the girls)" it sounded more like The Cure's "killing an Arab" plus Carlos wore eyeliner a lot which is more of a "Cure" thing to do.

  • he fucks up the fist line and says "fuck off" or summet lol,

  • oh yea he does.

  • i love the keybordest dance lol

  • LOL same same!

  • i think they got the sound of pretty good, but i do agree they sound much better in concert. i say this is the exuivelent to an amazing local band you'd see playing a venue or something performance wise

  • this is a horrible performance.

  • dude are you another interpol hater? cause if so your on my to kill list.

  • thats not very bright and friendly. and he is right, this performance really aint mind-blowing.

so dont kill anyone, immerge your soul in love man!

  • To be honest, if you watch all three times Interpol have performed on Letterman they always sound not so good...I've seen Interpol in concert 3 times now, and I can safely say that whoever is the sound engineer at Letterman's show, never does Interpol justice.

  • He seems extra nervous when he does Letterman.

Perhaps he's got some sort of Harvey Pekar complex.

  • i think you mean immerse. and yeah this is not a great live performance. the guitars sound muddy, the timing is dodgy and the vocals are a tad weak. but hey, they are a good band

  • dude, i agree, email me the To Kill List(TKL) and we can hunt this dude along with the other to kill-ees together.

    tty real soon new buddy.

  • k man let me find it!

  • lol.

  • i'm down as long as you kill that jesusjerkoff douch bag

  • this is indeed pretty fuking terrible... I like this band a lot though.

  • Yeah, it's very lame, i agree

The one on Jools Holland is much better

They dont get the power out of the song here

  • grande interpol band in continua ascesa troppo forti .....indie rock italia.

  • When did this aire on TV? I'm upset I missed it.

    Thank you for posting this.

  • ahahhah da raisat extra!

    grande!

  • thank.you.for.this.
