What an irresponsible video - given the dangerous ingredients used - why bother with all that when you could go out and buy your own soap instead of dabbling in something more suited to a qualified person which could prove catastrophic especially in the wrong hands - you do not give out proper instructions/contraindications unlike other more responsible tutorials eg "ourharps" . One needs to know about alkalines/ph properties generally before experimenting with such dangerous ingredients.
@ella7903 First of all I am NOT experimenting. Secondly I am well qualified. I have been making soap since I was a kid, learning from my grandmother. I know the dangers involved, and if handled safely and properly it's relatively safe. I DO warn people of the dangers and if you want to buy your soap at the store that has an ingredient list longer than your comment, go right ahead. I just prefer to control the ingredients and quality of the soaps i wash my body with!
Do you test your soap for alkalinity before they cure or after they cure? and if so, how do you test your soap to make sure no lye is present. I am afraid to give away my soaps because of this. I am sure of mymeasurements, but I still want to be safe before I give them away
@ella7903 Those "more organic and what not soaps" would still involve lye though. No lye, no soap, so I'm not sure what kind of soap you're talking about..?
Also, soap in stores is rarely traditional, in factory's they take out all the good stuff..
And Melissa is telling you plenty, if you're dumb enough to try this without reading up on it first then that's not really her fault, she warned you (not you, but people in general)..
Hi, I've a couple of questions, as I hope to be soap making soon! Can you use an enamel pot? Do you have any 'rules of thumb' for additives, like herbs, etc.? What about adding salt? Also, what are acceptable substitutes for the silicone molds? Thank you sooo much!
Hi, Very simple instructions! Yay! I do have a couple of questions as I will be attempting my 1st soap soon. Do you have 'rule of thumb' porportions for additives, like herbs and such? Also, could I use an enamel pot? Lastly, is there an adequate substitute for the silicone molds? I'm wanting add sea salt as well. Any suggestions on how much salt and when to add? Thank you!
This is one of the best videos on home soapmaking I've seen. Correct procedure, no over-reactive fear of lye (super caution, but it's not so scary you can't use it) and measuring, instead of weighing. If you want a consistent product measuring will ensure it every time. Keep the lye scoop with the lye! I feel stupid. It's such an easy and obvious idea. I never thought about it. Slapping forehead. This video rocks and if you don't know what lye is, please don't make soap till you do.
@luweehsah When soap is made properly, then there is no actual lye in soap. Lye and oils get converted into a sort of salt which is soap. Most soapmakers these days but extra oils in soap to make it exta moisturizing.
Maybe my memory is foggy, but my chemistry proff told me that it's a bad idea to use glass and NaOH together, because it can actually degrade the glass.
@twobitmage it can but not unless ur making huge batches and your using lots of lye. even in that case u can use glass to mix lye water in if the glass is thick
All measurements are done by weight, it's far more accurate. An ounce measure on a measuring cup and an ounce on a scale are different depending on the liquid. oils weigh more than water, so its crucial to weigh them out!
love that you made soap in your tidy kitchen instead of outside in a barn like it's some kind of nuclear reaction! you gave us the measurements on you lye and water, would you do the same for the oils? I'm ready to do my first batch and would like to know it's going to turn out!
BTW...go to a second hand store, I've purchased several stick blenders for smoothie making for $5.00 each and they were top brand name!
Sodium Hydroxide, it's the chemical (naturally derived by the way) that reacts to the oils and saponifies them. Basically it is what makes it bath soap and not bath oil.
Before the chemical process called saponification is finished, Sodium hydroxide in it's raw form can cause severe chemical burns to the skin and mucus membranes. That is why you wear gloves and a mask on your face. I dont use a mask, but gloves are a must! The oils and water mi with the S.Hydroxide and the chemical properties change making them safe for skin.
What oil/oils did you use in this demonstration? Since as far as I know, each type of oil have different fatty acid content, so what oil did you use to have that kind of Lye-oil ratio?
heyy melissa..! I really really love your soaps..! my cousin got like 7 of them last year and when i visited her she gave them to me as my birthday present..! they are totally gr8 ppl you should really try them out and they are in a really good price. is too bad that you dont ship to Guatemala because I NEED MOREE..! anyways gr8 joob..! and can you please make another video like this.. a more recent one? please please!!
Everywhere I look online, sodium hydroxide is really expensive with the shipping - and nowhere around here carries 100% lye. Where the hell do you get it for a reasonable price?!
LOL...you said it was a spaghetti jar is that a canning jar?? Also you might want to curb the swearing or you may lose a portion of your audience. (@ 3:25-27)
One thing I'd like to point out is that glass is not the best container to mix lye water in. Because of the high temperature, there is always a chance the glass will shatter. Metal (except for stainless steel) is not optimal as it will probably cause the lye to react and ruin the batch. Interestingly, plastic is sturdy enough to handle the heat. I use a regular plastic pitcher for mixing with no problems. Never had a melting problem or anything.
Yeah glass can be tricky, but I use canning jars...and they are heat safe. I haven't used plastic because I was afraid of the melting...so perhaps I will try that!
Hey girl.....looks great but have you ever tried a stickblender? You can pick them up at Walmart for like $12 or so....I have one dedicated to soap only and one to Lotion only! IT's so much easier and quicker.....I still don't do it for too long though because I like to pour at pretty light trace especially if I am using a FO that I haven't used before and I don't know if it's gonna be a super heater! HTH! :-)
I want to get a stick blender! I think that's the next thing on my list to get. I pour at light trace too, I want to make sure that it sets with a smooth top!!
