I beleve you are playing the first riff wrong. If you watch the video when he gets to the open d then 10d 8d 7d then you say to play 8a it should be after 10, 8, 7 it should be a nother open d.. thats the way it looks in the video....

i find it only hurts for me when i do a bar... but for this song when i bar the e,a and d i hold my index finger down with my thumb on the other side of the neck of my guitar. it presses the bar down harder, sounds cleaner, and doesnt hurt.
