  • Punishing the poor is what i am using for my course. So far while reading it i always in need of a dictionary immediately on hand because on how his sentence structure and words are much more complex than an ordinary book. i am not even sure what i am reading, it is definitely a difficult book to grasp.

  • Congrats Professor Gottschalk on your shout out.

  • Bernard Harcourt has some fascinating contributions as well if haven't read his stuff.

  • Wacquant states that its necessary to step out of the crime and punishment criminological box to explain hyperincarceration. Not true. Garland, who exists squarly within criminology, has demolished Wacquants theories. Would it be correct to accuse Wacquant of a Marxist determinism? Or maybe of a niave functionalism? Maybe. He certainly is adept both at sefl promotion and attacking others work without a leg of his own to stand on.

  • Wacquants mega-theory sounds great and is certainly exciting to experience him in person. However his theory has many gaps, and lacks an empirical base. Even if one accepts his narrative for the USA it clearly cannot be accepted for Europe. Garland made the same mistake of trying to impose transatlantic theory that explains incarceration rates. That didnt work either. Nevertheless Garlands work is far better than Wacquants, much more detailed, and actually considers crime as a phenomena.

  • I wish I could be present in his class room or during one of his lectures. However, I have really enjoyed reading his works. Very informative.

  • does anyone have the slides which he screened during his lecture? Or does anyone know where I can get them?

  • Wacquant argument seems to be absolutely plausible. There is no thing like the residual state, a minimal neoliberal reduction of the political sphere. It is although not possible to have a non-intervensive state - each decision against an intervention is an decision for an intervention for those, who are already in power.

  • Loïc Wacquant a man ahead of his time

  • Amazing group of thinkers.
