I always loved this version the best, even more than studio. The way he can blend clean improvisation with all that distorted intro AND still play the song perfectly is just awesome. AAAAND he can STILL play that greatly today! Eric Johnson has been a stellar performer since the first time he stepped on the stage and doesn't seem able to drop the quality even after so many years - something so many guitarists and singers alone can't do; yet he can still do both as if it were still the 80's!
Wow lots of this is amazingly beautiful, then he randomly comes out with streams of licks that make me want to puke for their uninventiveness and atonality and also anality...
I feel so blessed to have actually been at this show. It was at the Bottom Line in NYC.The guy who invited me was doing a review of the show for a local music rag. I was not familiar with him at the time but the dude assured me it was a must see. Needless to say ,I was shocked beyond repair by the end of the set. One of the best Guitarists ever obviously. Nice mullet he was sporting too !!! sign o the times !!!
I swear from like 4:35 to 5:30 my ears actually got confused into thinking they were hearing a violinist performing a cadenza from some epic violin concerto. EJ is sick like that.
@snelseb hell yeah!!!!!! eric johnson is the best guitar player i've ever known..and i am at guitar the way i am, because of him..x_x
well, with being said..i dont like cliff of dover xDDDDDDDDDDDDDD the song is just not cool..the only think i like of the song, is the minutes before the actual song..the magic O_O
btw, danny gatton should've won the prize instead of cliffs of dover
@screenpuller yea x_x he thinks that, his guitars..have a time to be with him..so when they complete their 'mission', they complete their cicle..so he just sell them xDDD
but he once said, selling that guitar was a bad idea..
-TheRealBDSlick- it doesnt matter if eric made a mistake. his the original composer of this song. the notes that eric plays in this live show song is unpredictable. all guitar artist change their versions in live sessions.
@leoren05 Jerry Reed (one of Eric's big influences) said during a live show that a lot of people come to hear him make mistakes and that they could rest easy as he made sure to rehearse a few of them into the songs..........
@screechkid116 lol, yeah, what could I say... I mean, the guy sounds absolutellly numb to the hole enviorment and texture built on Eric's playing... I mean... come on.
@MrMegawilliams91 I would if I had the skill, but who needs to know how to play the song to know if Eric is playing the song right when you are skilled at the ear notation theory?
I remember Chet Adkins and talk about self imposed pressure he was discussing the beginning of each gig; " I can always count on the first few rows populated with guitar players. I know they're just waiting & watching for my first mistake"......I'll bet he had butterflies the size of dinner plates!!! But hey, he's Chet and he is the Standard by which all are judged.
@TheRealBDSlick And like a true musician...he keeps playing as if it never happened. One of the key rules for any musician is to not let yourself get "hung up" on a simple mistake. You just keep going.
When I went to the 1st G3 tour I had some misinformed Steve Vai fans around me and before the show the kept wondering why Steve was playing before Eric. I said after you hear Eric rip you might wonder he was playing before Satriani. When these Vai fans were watching Eric the were dead silent with their mouths open. This song is a pure instrumental masterpiece.
i love how he is so beautifully improvising around the structure of such a brilliant composition that he wrote himself.. this intro KILLS ME! he's like a guitar angel... i can play the studio version but not this stuff haha
Intro>Cliffs of Dovers noobs of music.
