Of course it's like that for most professions in the states, I was SHOCKED when I heard what doctors make, don't let anyone tell you a public health system will result in poor service or low pay, junior doctors here in Australia in public hospitals make around 150k and they are all in favor of the public health system and the outcomes for patients it provides. Nobody here has to decide between their fingers or paying the insurance excess on microsurgery...and you don't have to worry that your d
Australian pilots earning six figures went on strike in the 90's complaining about some of the things that are standard in the states being introduced here, they thought they were clever, the airlines advertised in the states and when pilots heard what they could earn here there was an invasion! still plenty of American pilots knocking around from that clever union tactic
@smallclark1 bit many pilots make that anyway and further more the people your talking about havnt spent upwards of $50k on their education and years training or have a huge responsibilities or peoples lives in their hands. People who have invested equivalent amounts of time and money in other proffessions would expect much greater remuneration and have far less responsibility
God i HATE pilots all most of you ever do is complain and whine. There are far more other people in the airports that have way more problems to deal with everyday! And $700.00 WOULDN'T BE THEIR DAILY PAY! That wouldn't even be a paycheck for 2 WEEKS of work. The american pilot does have it pretty good, but they just want more. ALWAYS WANTING MORE!
Well "those guys" are a dieing breed. The airlines have done a great job and beating the shit out of the pilot career, that there are no more kids who want to do this job.
I look at the past, of when this was a well paid and high-standing career. A time when flying was so "hands on," and planes like the DC-10, L1011, Concorde, 727, etc. filled the skies. Now all the planes look the same, and flying is just a matter of button-pushing.
I think about all of that, and then I think "fuck, why wasn't I born 80 years ago?"
I CAN'T do anything else but fly, someday. It's my nature. But who do I have to be treated like dirt to live my dream?
@deweyboy1 he's talking about working at a major airline which will take you 20-30 years experience to reach. 700 was my paycheck at the beginning too. Also, if his airline went out of business, he'd have to start out at (minimum wage when you do the math) all over again.
and my childrens birthday parties I miss etc the job really sucks. Now for me there is hope I could upgrade then I could make possibly around $40 an hour on average. Unfortunately I am an FO not by choice. Bad economy = no movement. So, when the opportunity comes I could make more cash but then I will be on reserve. that is a whole other video on the life of a reserve pilot. I think I will build my seniority of the FO side finish my nursing deg when I can and get the frick outta aviation
I am usually 70 hours more away than if I had a normal job plus how many nights away from home does a normal person have 0. I usually average 12 (and I don't commute I drive to work). Then I take my pay for the month and divide by how ever many "normal person" work hours there are in that month. I usually come up with around $20 an hour. Not a bad job right? but when you factor in the weekends worked holidays contantly changing schedule (so I have a hard time getting my nursing degree...
Okay so the guy in the video is captain and makes probably double the first officer. I look at things each month on my schedule in a couple of different ways: one nights in my own bed, days off, hours of credit, duty time and time away from based (tafb or per diem amount). I always assume that I am a regular 9-5 guy working 30 minutes in one direction from my house (1 hour round trip) with a 30 minute unpaid lunch. I then compair my (what I call time away from home) tafh with the regular guy.
Keep em coming! So true. I am a regional airline captainand make ok money but really, for my skills and experience I am WELL below the rate of pay of most ALL my friends who are in corporate positions who earn well over $110k, and some earn over 160k!
Take it from the satirical stance of "the family guy" Quagmire. Your whole life is made to become the pilot guy. Who lives and breaths flying, only to find out years later after the divorces and missing your children grow up that U have been duped
In a regular job, if I have 10 years experience and I feel I'm being underpaid, treated poorly or not getting good opportunities, I can take that experience and go to another firm across town. If I am really any good, I can negotiate a new job and enter as a veteran. I get credit for my 10 years experience and I'm not lumped in with the college grad just starting in the industry. As a pilot, if I leave my company, I have to start over at the very bottom.
@workslave Thanks for the catch. Blame it on pilot fatigue. Even with two pilots we occasionally land without a landing clearance. ($140 x 5hrs = 700 +$26 lunch money = $726 - $14 for union dues = $712 ) divide by 13 hours at work = $55/hr Lunch money (per diem) is paid for 24 hours if you are on an overnight. Regional FO's and FA's may want to avoid doing these calculations. Wisdom in twinpratts advice as well.
@delauren1228 No worries, consider it a compliment since it means i've watched your videos more than once. Whether or not an FO calculates his pay doesn't really matter i think. There's no way he can ever change it. He's going to be stuck in the aviation nightmare for the rest of his career. First he would have to pay off his training loan, once he has he'll be too old to still start something new. But i guess i'm not telling you anything new here. Hope you're windshield is alright.
this doesn't just apply to pilots, this is also something that applies to flight attendants too. except we are paid far less per hour of "work." hope that people watch this and realize that it is true.
The points made in this video (and his previous video) are exactly why I bailed and got a real job for well over twice the money!
For all you young people out there...GO TO COLLEGE. GET A MASTERS DEGREE. Get a good job, start a Roth-IRA, open a 401k, and buy your own plane. Flying privately is a lot more fun, trust me on this.
