Druyan says at 8:12 that "saving the appearances" means to save the religious story, but that is not correct.

Saving the appearances or phenomena, means to give a theory/hypothesis/formula that correctly predicts and calculates the observations without actually making any claims about reality.

eg; back in the day, postulating the sun-centred model of the solar system was said not be be how the solar system really was, but just a way to correctly calculate the observed planetary motions.
