I'm sure that I must've heard of the book and the movie over the years, but I've never investigated either of them. Although this clip certainly makes me want to do so immediately.
Hi, I am curious as to why you think Jenny Agutter ruined the film. I thought she did a decent job. And she did win an Emmy Award for her performance so she couldn't have been THAT bad. Her portrayal of Fritha is a little different than the book but that could be due to the script which limited her role (IMO).
Because Jenny Agutter was Jenny Agutter- it seems difficult for her to be anything but herself with some basic emotion thrown in here and there. I don't think it was anything to do with the script, it was more to do with her take on the role. I simply wasn't very impressed. Fritha is a young, flighty and curious creature with complex emotions and despite her aging, has a very childlike grasp of the world around her. She's a good actress but it didn't do it for me.
I don't know if any teenage actress could have lived up to Fritha from the book. Plus, I figured that any dryness from Agutter was simply the British way. Again, I'm not saying that Agutter was impressive. But I didn't think she did so bad that she ruined the film. I'm not sure who would have been right for that role. A young Christina Ricci perhaps? Or Dakota Fanning? But back in 1971 I don't know who.
Being British, I'm naturally going to disagree. No, for a production like this I would have scouted for some raw talent befitting of the role. I don't see why an A-list of actors need be used constantly now nor why it was needed to be done back then.
The Snow Goose starring Herbert Marshell was my favorite. It always made me cry.

The book is beautiful. Very short but very good. I reccomend both although, I have to say, the film is ruined by Jenny Agutter.
