@studioscratches yup watched u explained it in another video.... second hand decks FTW! been using my secondhand technics for 8 years now!!!!.... GREAT tutorials by the way :)
thanks for putting all these vids online im finding it alot easier now (i didnt have a clue till i found these very informative vids) cheers.... also would u recommend purchasing a technics turntable just for scratching as ive a pair of cdj800mk2s at the moment not sure if they r as good with not having the drag of the vinyl (im very new to this btw)
@santaclause163 vinyl is so much better for scratching. You get a feel not possible with cdjs or midi controllers. So i recommend a turntable for sure. Technics are my favourite!
i had two sets of technics.. 1 pair when about 18 and another set in my mid/late 20/s now moved to cdj but will definitely invest in another technics 4 scratching
@studioscratches Hey Short e. I have been searching youtube for some "Ohh Yeaah" and "ahh" "fresh" samples but can't seem to find a quality one. Do you know a good place to download them from?? Thanks
nice skillz there studioscratches, i always had trouble with the transformer scratch myself...love the battle ready turntable position.i'm a dinosaur dj from the mid 80's and stopped spinning in the mid 90's...i dont have any equipment anymore and would like to get back to spinning. what would you suggest on a limited budget pioneer ddj etc? loved the tutorial liked n scribed 1 gon check more of your videos...
@xxdjcharlierockxx hey, honestly i recommend saving a bit longer and getting a technics table or vestax. and a decent mixer. Its just that otherwise as you improve your gear won't last with you.
@studioscratches absolutely...i think it's a awesome thing to teach upcoming dj's how to obtain these skillz ...your videos are easy to follow and understand.
@DjHardonic i make digital scratch records with all the sounds on. You can find them in the Studio Scratches beat store on the main site. let me know if you can't find them.
@ricanjoker24 hello no they are digital for use with serato. If you search for vinyl scratch record on google you can find vinyl records like superseal
2. all my life im searching for a good scratch sound.. when try to scratch with my timecodes the sound issn very nice.(it's not a typical scratch sound) .. do i maybe scratch the wrong places? or a wrong song ?
@DjHardonic thanks! i make digital scratch records for use with time codes. See the Studio Scratches site for more details or the beat store. Also you might need to EQ your samples - easy on the bass. What sounds are you using at the moment?
First let me echo what's been said: I truly appreciate your tutorials. They've been really helpful for me. I had two questions, though.
1) Did you post your vids in the order that one should learn? I've been having trouble with the advanced part of the Chirp and was wondering if I could move on to something else before I master it.
2) Does the height of your table seriously affect how you scratch? I feel like mine may be a little low. Is there a generally accepted way to measure that? Thanks
1 - yes i tried to make them in the order you could learn them. You can learn in whatever order you want but i aimed to make it make the most sense.
2 - yes it does. too low makes it hard, same with too high. the correct height is if you have your elbows bent with your arms out flat and parallel to the table. drop your hands at the wrist then where your fingers are is how high the table should be.
For all those who dont know, The "ahhh" noise and the infamous "fresh" comes from the B-side of Fab Five Freddy's "Change the Beat". The song is called "Change le Beat" because the lyrics are all sung in french
I think the most important thing in the chirp is the coordination between the fader and the vinyl. That's what i found hardest, in fact i'm still working on it. Good tutorial Short-e, thank you!
@youngcrestie beats you can use any instrumental, but I use beats that I make available in the studio scratches store along with digital scratch records. Either that or real records. this one is super seal.
is it possible to do this on Mp3 controler "good"? i tryed , got the start but nothing else just wanna know is it my fail or my Mp3 controler fail ... because its looks like it is possble to do this on numark mixtrack pro numark.co /mixtrackpro
when starting, that will say when having the crossfader opened and move the record forward at the same time as i close the crossfader, i never get any sound ): i think i close it too fast, even if I'm doing it at the exact same time, really hard to get the timing, does it have something to do with the turntables? is it easier with vinyl? cuz am on a midi controller
@olabadola21 it is about timing- you need just to hear a bit of the sound before you close the fader. also you need a fader that has a really sharp cut in and not fade cut in. Should be the same principles with midi as vinyl although vinyl is so precise.
Thanks alot for these great video turorials. I find them realy helpful as i just got my first set of turntables. And also the beats on your site is great for practice, i would download if i had serato or anything but as for now im keeping it analog so i just plug the pc in to the mixer and stream the beats until i can get som beats on viny. Happy xmas and all...
I improved 10 fold after watching and following along. I have that same Superseal vinyl... got it at Waterloo Records here in Austin, TX. I'm an instant fan, thanks again!!!
@Supreme71000 it is called super seal, google all good record stores. Alternatively if you have serato or traktor scratch, you can download one of my digital scratch records available on the main studio scratches website / store.
@studioscratches What do you mean by inverted? I'm right handed, so do all scratch dj's scratch with there left hand? Im soryy, im quite new to all of this. And Short-E you are the best dj I have ever seen! Keep up the good Work!
@LauraAdato hey. don't be sorry! inverted means that the fader cuts in reverse to the way most people scratch - so instead of pushing the fader to the right to cut the left record in, i push it to the right. you can scratch either side with either hand on the record - look at d-styles, he scratches that way and is one of the best and one of my favourite djs ever! thanks for the support!
@bikeflowers123 turntablelab or any record store that stocks super seal. Or I make digital break records you can download from the main Studio Scratches beats store.
i have just start my adventure with scratch, and i don't known what's the better crossfader style? can i use it as i want or one of styles is easier / harder?
@KeepItFresh02 take it super slowly! listen to funky music that inspires you - also listen to other scratch DJs - DJ Premier is the KING of the funky chirp scratch!
one of my favorite local bars may close down in a week or two, so I was gonna dj there for free 1 nite a week (lotta mash ups) & do all the flyers in photoshop to try to get some heads in there & help keep it open- I have a little following on myspace
excellent videos!!- what model vestax mixer are you using and would u recommend it to a beginner? I've been doing mash ups for years on my DAW- but just getting into live scratching-but I need to get a cheap but good mixer-any recommendations?
@DJControllerC thats an 06 pro a. very good beginner mixer! the thing with cheap mixers is the faders cant hack the pace. better to save a bit longer and get something decent. if you decide you dont like it, it will hold its value for places like ebay usually. vestax or rane gets my vote!
hey dj short -E- :P its me makis from greece who was asking u questions in other videos asking u about crossfader teqniques about gear etc .but anyway ! where CAN I FIND THAT RECORD? the record that u are using for scratching in this video.
@studioscratches Wow, you are replying me >< That's really cool! I like your videos , it's so informational and it really helps me compared to other videos on youtube, thank you ;) Btw, don't worry, amazing girl like you, sure will end up in a happy family ;)
hello there DJ SHORT - E i am makis from greece. i just bought a stanton t - 92 usb pick up , a stanton mixer and some behringer powered speakers. i hadnt ever scratched in my life before. i am a bass player so i had the idea of using a METRONOME to practice on scratches to do them faster etc . do u think it is a good idea? do u have any PRACTICE tips?
@makilkail most people use instrumental music instead of a metronome, but whatever works for you! I guess as a training method but music might be more fun! I have created a whole load of instrumentals for scratch practice just visit the studio scratches website and look for beats / store. cheers! - Short-E
sometimes when i scratch I the record jumps to another part of the record. would like some perspective on what is causing this cause i am sooooo frustrated!!
@studioscratches i seen you on the studioscratches site ..and was wondering if your vestax mixer was as good as your rane mixer for scratching. my mate has a technics dmc mixer for sale can you tell if they are any good as i was geting scerto scratch... thank,s for replying so quick ..short-E
@asrex101 Hey The rane is better but the vestax is a great mixer to start off with - I had mine for 10 years with a couple of different crossfaders in over the years. The DMC mixer is ok, i prefer vestax or rane. Cheers! - Short-E
can we do same scratching in cd decks rather than vinyl?
vinyls are like cds rite? like we can get vinyls wit diff songs? sorry but i know its a lame question but everyone are not born intello :D so help me out
@SuperRoomie its not the same with CD decks to be honest. You can burn your own cds of scratch tools to scratch with it just will sound different and is kinda hard to cut with CDs. Vinyl is definitely best for serious scratching! You can do babies ok with cds.
@PSChrisDC hey its Beat # 8528 available from the Studio Scratches Store. Please check the full video description for the link! There are 100s of beats available in the store designed specifically for scratch practice! - Short-E
@djsinnay hey - there are pros and cons to each. Personally I am right handed and have that on the fader, but people like qbert and d-styles do the opposite. that gives you really strong record control. its a personal choice! I just did what felt natural...
do you reckon using the fader reverse switch would be just as efficient? cos if i was to try a chirp on deck B i'd be screwed.. just wondering cos i don't have a vestax mixer
the chirp must be the best freakin' scratch of all (in my opinion and liking) Absolutely wicked tutorials!

Cheers! - Short-E

@studioscratches hey i have a serious doubt
can we do same scratching in cd decks rather than vinyl?
vinyls are like cds rite? like we can get vinyls wit diff songs? sorry but i know its a lame question but everyone are not born intello :D so help me out
SuperRoomie 9 months ago
@SuperRoomie its not the same with CD decks to be honest. You can burn your own cds of scratch tools to scratch with it just will sound different and is kinda hard to cut with CDs. Vinyl is definitely best for serious scratching! You can do babies ok with cds.

if your right handed
would it be best to use the crossfader wit your right hand or move the record wit your right hand? wat would yu prefer or think is better??
djsinnay 9 months ago
@djsinnay hey - there are pros and cons to each. Personally I am right handed and have that on the fader, but people like qbert and d-styles do the opposite. that gives you really strong record control. its a personal choice! I just did what felt natural...

do you reckon using the fader reverse switch would be just as efficient? cos if i was to try a chirp on deck B i'd be screwed.. just wondering cos i don't have a vestax mixer
chuckno8 11 months ago
@chuckno8 you dont have to have the fader in reverse its just a preference.
studioscratches 11 months ago
do you think it easier to use the fader reverse switch for a chirp scratch or do you use it all the time?
chuckno8 11 months ago
@chuckno8 not easier just different. Like skating regular or goofy! I am reverse all the time
studioscratches 11 months ago
great tutorial! is it possible to get the sound from the record in mp3 format? and if so, where?
berean7 11 months ago
@berean7 it should be. Any digital scratch record would have it.
