One small note: You shouldn't mention that this is just a "beginner or practice amp." Sure, it can be used as such. HOWEVER... amps such as this one are literally phenomenal for recording very serious old-school Blues albums! :)
@yolchie You are So right! I actually used it at a jam session last night with some friends and didn't even mic it. And I fixed the hum issue by a simple replacement of the volume pot. It ROCKS!
I wish i had all these low watt tube amps available for such good prices when i started playing. Kids nowerdays dont have any reason to get shitty little marshall mg amps anymore like we all did. Now they have Marshall MA's, orange tiny terrors, various fender and vox amps etc. Lucky bastards :-)
Very good video. It's especially interesting because you use a Tele and give us an idea of the clean sounds, not like many other guys who just play "any" guitar with as much overdrive as possible so you can't tell anything ;-)
@Theonlymoog, What your seeing is a phenomenon called beating. It is due to the LED being driven by a timing circuit at high frequency(so high it looks like its on and not pulsing normally) and the video recording at another. It is similar to constructive and destructive interference of waves.
@1971SuperLead The video doesn't make justice to the amp. Long time ago i was for a Champ like this but all i did was see and hear the videos from here. Finally decided i went to a shop and i tested it with a bucnh of different guitars. The amp surprised me a lot!!! But being sincere you must to find a guitar that match the amp and your styel. There is no other way people should tested inperson! The only video here that makes it justice is the Menatone "The Snapper" demo. Hope it helps! Enjoy!
@alvaritooooooooo I think that for the price you can't beat this amp for low volume tone. I have 3 Fender Champs now. A 68, 73 and a 76 and they sound incredible when used as clean amps or with distortion pedals, but I don't run them wide open. The 68 sounds pretty good full blast but I still prefer a dirt box instead.
I think this amp sounds at least as good as my Champs, and I bet you can get them used for under $100.
@1971SuperLead Thanks for the comment. I've never tried an old Champ but i'd like to in the future. IMHO This is has a nice look that the blackfaces and silverfaces. Please, could you explain me what do you refer as "run them wide open"? I can speak english but sometimes there are things that i don't catch very well... Thanks!
@alvaritooooooooo "run them wide open" means the same as to set the volume to the maximum. I don't really care for the natural distortion or overdrive of the amplifiers and so I never place the volume to the point where the Champs begin to clip, break up, distort or overdrive. I usually set the volumes to 4 or 5 and rely on distortion pedals for any distortion.
I use two Champs at a time for stereo sound. It's the best!
@1971SuperLead Nice! I mainly play clean or semiclean crunch tones and gaming with the guitar's volume knob seeking for that sweet dynamics. When i played the Champ at a shop i loved how the amp works at any level but since you said that i'll try with a nice pedal to cranked it up! I used to play with a JTM45 (not tested some boutique amps yet and i loved to but this is one of my favs until now!) and now i'm looking for a less volume amp so i decided to acquire a 5E3 i must try the stereo thing!
@alvaritooooooooo Check out the Boss RE-20 for a great stereo reverb and delay unit for under $200. A stereo chorus is nice too. Once you try stereo....there is no going back.
@1971SuperLead I've got it too. Different tubes like I got (jj's) change a whole lot. And I thought it was just a "small" amp too. Actually it's a beast! Really, this thing is loud! Believe me!
@poichai I don't know. I have not played through the vox ac4tv. Besides, I bought this amp so I could practice at lower volumes when I am in my apartment. I wasn't looking for loud. I was looking for quiet.
I've been playing electric. guitar for about half a year, and my primary instrument is electric bass. I've always wanted a Telecaster, and I think I'm going with the Baja Telecaster unless you would recommend something else with that vintage look and tone. I'm gonna get that amp, too, along with a tweed strap, case, and guitar cable. That s**t rocks, man! Thanks for the review! Great sound!
@xLot225musicXx Trust your ears and eyes. Go to a music store and try the Baja Telecaster, and try some others, too. See what sounds good, looks good, and feels good to YOU!
why do many of the reviews of this amp have it facing backwards-of all the reviews I've watched for different amps I haven't seen thIs other than with the 600. I own one and do not play it this way-am I missing something?
I bought this amp yesterday because of your review. The tone is so so nice but I can't play it loud enough to reach the distortion because of the neighbors. It is pretty loud...wow. Which pedal would you use: simple Boss overdrive, blues driver, tube screamer. What would you use?
@paulgaudinjrBCN I would take my guitar and the amp to a music store, and ask to try a few pedals out with your guitar through tyour amp> That way you can hear how it sounds with your gear.
I use the Digitech Eric Clapton Crossroads pedal for distortion when I have to play really quietly. I also use an MXR Dynacomp between my guitar and the Crossroads pedal to increase sustain at low volume.
@paulgaudinjrBCN it really depends on what you like the blues driver is good i really dont care for boss's other overdrive pedals too much but you really cant go wrong with a tubescreamer (especially the new reissue)
@Athinter Mine is stock off the shelf, and sounds fine. Try the one you are gonna buy, at the store. They probably don't all roll off the assembly line exactly the same.
@Athinter Only so much a 6" speaker can do. The amp gives you a great old school vintage quality and amazingly doesn't sound too boxy. Great for recording. I would upgrade the tudes to JJ's or even a vintage set of RCA's. Great little amp overall for the money though.
My champion 600 is loud as hell, even through the low gain jack, with a humbucker equipped guitar... and since it has no headphone jack, I never get to really crank the thing.
@TimVBM Honestly, I prefer the Champion 600. Even though the SCXD is much louder and has fx, nothing beats that tube sound. In terms of the tube tone, the scxd does not make the cut. However, it is useful to have both since you can have a very versatile amp in the scxd and also a late-night jam amp, the 600.
Of course you can save the Champion 600 cash for another better tube amp.
Im thinking of buying this amp to bring with me when traveling to asia, Im kinda wondering about that cable, is it built in? or can you change the cable if you wanted? the reason Im wondering this is because the plugs are different in asia vs europe, europe has 2 pins and asia 3 pins, thanks
@satjathamma The cable is attached, and the amp is designed for 120 volt 60 HZ. You might consider buying a voltage converter or adater to change the voltage in whatever country you travel to. Google "international voltage convertor".
@samguitarmurphy My Champion is straight out of the box. Even has the original speaker. I tried it out at the store, and bought the one off the floor.
@Guitarvirtuoso666 Are you sure it is the speaker? The tube amp starts distorting as you turn it up. You can use the tube distortion to your advantage with practice.
Try plugging an external spaeker cab into the speaker output and see how it sounds.
I've already done that and I got Rid of the problem but it makes a lot hiss/hum which is problematic since I do not have a noise filter or anything like that
@Guitarvirtuoso666 Does the buzz stay the same no matter what pickup you select on your start? Usually positions 2 and 4 on the start reduce hum a little as the middle pickup is wired opposit of the other two, acting as a humbucker. If the hum and hiss are still bad, maybe you got a lemon. Fender will repair or replace defective amps. They replaced my Vibrolux when my first one had a defect.
Yeah it definitly isn't wat they call '60 cycle hum' or something like that.
It could be that I have received a crappy one, or it just can't handel my tremendous playing skills *cough cough*
Anyway I received it for free so I don't know if Fender is willing tot repair it for me, but I am saving up for a decent amp anyway so within a few months I should be able to rock out to infinity:)
@Zangoose69 The low jack is for instruments that already have a pre-amp and therefore a hotter signal. Back in the day, that would have been an accordian. These days, it is electric keyboards or guitars with an onboard pre-amp (Ovations come to mind) ..
Hey do you think if I bought an Ibanez Tubescreamer pedal I could plug that before the amp to get some SRV style distortion? Cause i'm seriously thinking of buying the 2 together for my stratocaster.
@crazycuntryboy2 The Champion 600 overdives pretty well without any pedals, but the tube screamer is a good pedal. I would get the amp first (whichever amp you choose) and then get the pedal. Try them out together at the store before you buy. Take your OWN guitar to the shop when you try out an amp.
Great video and demo! So I live in a mobile home and the units are about 15 feet apart, do you think this would work at 5-6 on the volume and not disturb the neighbors? I mean, where they can't hear it at all.
I don't have this amp and dont want to speak for the original poster, but I've had an old Champ before and despite being only 5 watts they are surprisingly loud. I would almost guarantee that with the volume on 6 the neighbors would hear it. You almost can't buy an amp with low enough power to get natural overdrive at sub-conversation level volumes. Unfortunately your best bet is probably a good distortion pedal with the level turned down. Zvex makes a 1W micro amp that you might check out.
@1Doz Yeah, I ended up getting one off of ebay, and man, they are freaking surprisingly loud. In order to get that good tube sound, you have to turn it up to like 8. Which is entirely to loud for close housing apartments or any neighbor friendly sitiuation. Im thinkin of getting a VOXAC4TV8
Is the VOX AC4 four watts by chance? If so it's going to be too loud too. In fact it might be louder than the Champ since its tone is brighter/more midrangey.
Keep in mind that volume is logarithmic. To double or halve the volume you have to increase or decrease power by a factor of 10. In other words, you'd have to get under 1 watt to have half the volume of your 5 watt Champ.
You might look at power attenuators like the Marshall PowerBrake.
@1Doz The VOXAC4TV has a built in attenuator which allows you to select your output level between 4watts, 1watt and 1/10 or 1/4 watt. Or I could just buy a HOT PLATE attenuator. I got this Champion 600 because my Fender Pro Jr 15 watts is way way too loud. But the Hot plate would allow me to play either the champ or the pro jr. But my money tree got destroyed by woodpeckers, so i'll have to wait for now.
You could always get an inexpensive resistive attenuator. They use a simple power resistor rather than a fancy reactive load to bleed off the power. I'll bet the difference wouldn't be that big (could be wrong).
Here's one on eBay, item number 160391472976. Will also come up if you search metal guitar attenuator.
Wow, I didn't notice that it goes in your effects loop. That means it's not really a power attenuator. It's more like a master-master volume. It only handles the line level signal going into the power amp, not the actual power amp output. What a crock.
Here's a true resistive power attenuator -- eBay item #300388445507. You might also search under PowerSoak, which was a popular unit back in the 1980s.
I think it is perfect for an apartment. Your neighbors might hear you depending on the insulation in the walls, but the only thing better for apartments or quiet playing is a headphone amp.
Best way to judge that is to play through it yourself. I love the way it overdrives, and my neighbors haven't complained about my playing, but then I try to play when they are out. And it sounds great with or without effects.
@MFJord1 I don't have a tube screamer, but I tried it with my digitech, and it was more distortion than I needed. Still sounded good, and sustained forever.
@MFJord1 What doesn't sound good with a Tube Screamer? It's a Tube Overdrive, so it makes the amp kick out the high gain crunch at lower volumes. Probably honestly a necessity here if you want to rock harder than blues rock.
Great demo i got one changing the speaker but like you said a great room amp and recording

will it be suitable for my apartment ??
plz answer!!

I think it is perfect for an apartment. Your neighbors might hear you depending on the insulation in the walls, but the only thing better for apartments or quiet playing is a headphone amp.

will i be able to get the cranked up crunchy sound also?
and does it sound good with effects pedals?
jsycorp 2 years ago
Best way to judge that is to play through it yourself. I love the way it overdrives, and my neighbors haven't complained about my playing, but then I try to play when they are out. And it sounds great with or without effects.

nice demo!!
would it sound good with a tube screamer?

@MFJord1 I don't have a tube screamer, but I tried it with my digitech, and it was more distortion than I needed. Still sounded good, and sustained forever.

@MFJord1 What doesn't sound good with a Tube Screamer? It's a Tube Overdrive, so it makes the amp kick out the high gain crunch at lower volumes. Probably honestly a necessity here if you want to rock harder than blues rock.

@MFJord1 Yes, it would kick a solo, this amp is pedal friendly
