The "Siegessäule (= victory coloumn) " was build in 1873 remberring the prussian victories over denmark in 1864, over Austria in 1866 and France 1870/1871. Primary it has nothing to do with Hitler or the second world war. Indeed, the "Siegessäule", was MOVED from the Reichstag-Building in 1930/31 by Hitlers architect Albert Speer because of "Germania", the capital that was planned by them after "nazi victory". They planned a huge victory hall. So, the "Siegessäule" had to be removed

The german authority did not allow obama to have a speech at the brandenburg gate, because in 2008 he was a candidate for presidency but not yet the president. They choosed the victory coloumn. The column was supposed to remind the Germans of gaining unity in 1871, for the first time in the history of Germans, there was then a one nation, one state for all Germans (okay, except Austrians ^^). Although the guy is right that it is a column of war (remembering the three wars leading to German unity against Denmark, Austria and France), it is more a sign for Germany's unification, a sign of glory one should not be embarrassed of ;)
