The last week of the 9th grade was the only time I ever got expelled from school. It was in Jacksonville, Florida, where a friend and I were booted for playing "It Don't Pay" and Buddy Holly's "Rave On" in school. Loud. Over and over. I've always considered "It Don't Pay" to be one of the very best of its time, and a top 5 all-time Rockabilly release. "All You Gotta Do" followed quickly. Despite its rough edges, it was a great record, too. Tracy should have sold zillions. What a great talent.
First heard Tracey and the boys from Cross City,Fla. on WDVH in G-ville on the Bob Norris show. Back in those days, each station had their own "Top 40" ratings that were distributed to record shops and such. "It Don't Pay" stayed at number one for several weeks. Even though half a century has passed since "Eternally", it sure is gratifying to see that others, mostly thru YouTube, have discovered what we knew back then; that the boy from Dixie County had it. May he rest in peace.
He's one of the greatest early Rockabilly singers of all time. He should have sold a zillion records.
