The Soviet VL80 is such a majestic locomotive. I wish Armenia will recognize what a gift the USSR has left them. To see that locomotive in that state kills me inside...
@traindude80 The Armenian railroads are now run under a thirty year concession agreement with the Russian railroads. There has been a lot of maintenance performed since this was shot. See youtube.com /watch?v=uuAbCEIBHk0 for a video of this same train taken two years later. The maintenance improvements are obvious.
Interesting video. I have never seen an elektrichka being pulled by locomotives before. Russian elektrichkas are commuter trains that run without locomotives. Armenia's elektrichkas must be so old that they can't run on their own...
dosn't our governnment try to 'clean' the trains if not upgrade?? This vid shows how the Armenian Governmwnt don't look after there trains :( sob! And I was so proud of my country! lol
The first locomotive of this service was produced in 1953 and an update was done in 1961. So indeed, this locomotive is at least 45 years old.
The transport sector does need updates. But electric locomotives do not wear out like diesel-electric ones. Changes in maintenance and operations are needed more then changes in motive power.
@jpkazarian Well said. As you say electrics last longer. I regularly see electric locos 45+ years old still working freights into and out of our local terminal. The diesels are on the most part 10-15 years old at most. And who wants diesels with the price of oil set to go through the roof and in the future, if you can get it.
The freight unit that goes by at video time 00:20 is a VL80T or VL82 Bo-Bo+Bo-Bo, 32.8 m long, 433 kN tractive effort, 110 km/h top speed. The lead passenger unit probably is similar, but with different gearing. Have no idea what the second passenger unit is.

@traindude80 : Agree! I'm also a huge fan of the Soviet locomotives, but got to say that the main loc shot in this video is ВЛ10 and not 80...

It's just too bad that Armenia is like the size of L.A. County.

notice the soviet star on the first locomotive! The train is at least 50 years old if not more.
We need to update the transport sector
except for the subways.
