oh so even though they called it news at ten, it wasn;t always on at ten. how odd. down here they just call the bulletins 'late news' so they can be shown whenever.
We have Ten News at 5 but if it's not on at 5 for some odd reason they just call it Ten News.
There was less news to report then, or at least there were less news channels (and probably no 24-hours news channels), and news wasn't generally reported as quickly then as it is now, so it didn't become stale so quickly.
remember the united kingdom only had three channels in 1981. channel four didn't start until 1982. no pay televison and certainly no 24 hour news channels like today.
"This is Thames. From London!" Sends chills down the spine that does - in remembrance of things past (Probably my Dad coming back from the pub at that time, opening the front door and letting a blast of cold air it!) No central heating in those days! - We were lucky to have a fire! ;)
Nostalgic isn't it? Similar for me as well, except for I grew up in Carlton, Nottingham. I remember my Dad pull up in his old 70s car, with the news on in the background, he'd come in, hang his coat up and sit down with his paper. I'll never forget his face when he looked down the end of his nose over his glasses at the television with the Nottingham Evening Post open in his hands.
Well, I say fire, but it were only when we could steal a piece of coal from when t'lorry called at t'big 'ouse over t' road! - We used to take turns in holding it. Dad used to warm it up for us at Christmas - if we were lucky.
You had a house? Lucky beggar! We had to make do with cardboard when we could find some. Then we had to get up half an hour before we went to bed to sweep chimnies for the rich folk.
omg 2 tv idents in one thames tv and itn news at ten what a reminder of years gone by and how simple the news was presented without all the graphics fantasic thank you
In this case, it wasn't so much that the programme had overrun, it was that it had been preceded by a Labour Party Political Broadcast, and then another ad break had come between that and the news.
Good old days

The news is important. hollyoaks, big broher and love ilande aren't.
Without the news, do you even think we'd have heard of the 9/11 attacks?

Good old British newscasters, just how chaved up is the news these days? Totally image orientated, it's the news for christ sake. News is not pretty.

Yeah, they did that quite a lot when the previous programme had overrun - showed the actual time, but still had the bongs.
