  • That is evil.

  • awesome

  • heh this is just greaaaat, i wonder how you do that...or what equipment it is

  • MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • how did you do that? ;P do you have a tutorial posted somewhere? ;P

  • Or mayby a guitar still being a BASS :O !!

  • Sick fuzz dude...what pedal is it?

  • hey marloweDK i got a question how meny bass playing techniques are there????

  • @Floferbut247 Well, I'm no MarloweDK, but as far as I know there's 3: Finger, Pick, Slap.

  • @asdfghjkl4099 tapping, double thump =]

  • is that a marcus miller bass?

  • I'd love to be the drummer in a band with a heavy bass guitarist, and a keyboardist with tons of effects.

    My brain would explode.

  • Why did I buy an electric guitar :p I already have a bass

  • Do you know where i can get a free drumbeat? I've been searching a bit but couldnt find any drum beats that were free :s

    Very nice performance btw ;)

  • @IronMaidenGuitarRs94 google "free backing tracks" loads of them online

  • Hey Marlowe can you do more videos like these????

    THX!!

  • very.....sexy....

  • this is a bit off topic from your video, but when i was jamming with my brother my bass started shocking me. what do you think i wrong?

  • that sucked turn down your gain

  • dirt

  • thats the way i slap my bitch!

  • Shut the hell up Ridge, Im voicing my opinion, is all .... I did say hes a great musician, didnt I..... but if you think this is great musicianship, then youre an amateur.... this is teenage metal ......

Ive been a professional musician for 30 years, graduate of Berkley Class of 78.....

  • Blwchef....

I DO have an idea who this man is, a great musician.... but hes not God!!!

I found this very poor quality , not hard to do at all .....is all I was saying!

  • @mugwaii2008 show us better then m8..put your money where your mouth is...if you dont find this interesting show us what you can do and let us decide

  • @mugwaii2008 dude, just cuz its not complexed or hard to play doesnt mean its poor quality.music doesnt need to be all overly intricate in order to sound good.what, are u mad that this simple riff might sound better than whatever u can come with?

    *sniff sniff

i think i smell jealousy lol

  • with that amount a distortion, even a monkey can make it sound like that...... !!

  • @mugwaii2008

you must not have any idea who this man is. Either that or you are joking. Yes is is an easy riff, but that isn't the point. Not everything has to be break neck speed, double thumb, raking harmonics and machine gun triplets.

  • sounds "big muff-ish"

  • is it distortion or fuzz?

  • what do you use for the distortion effect? Reminds me of my old MXR distortion +

  • =) cool

  • i meant EVIL ....lol

  • OMG awsome man please do another vid like this with ya nasty hand slap....hehe ....

  • That fucking awesome, love the first riff!

  • mate! wtf! that is just too too cool.

  • I think my balls just dropped again

  • cool

  • yeah

  • what Xnocturnus said!

  • That...was...fuckin'...AWESOME.

  • he's using a fuzz effect. Not distortion.

  • @Raindarsus i cant tell the difference sometimes...

  • @iop223 Yeah it can be slightly confusing at time, the trick is to listen to what shape the sound has. It's hard to explain in text, but a distortion has more of a grrr sound and is often cleaner in the phase and harmonics, compared to a fuzz that.. well the name says it, it muffs the sound, blurring it.

  • ok i have a bass and i havent been playing it long how can i make my bass sound like this? i have a reasonably good amp and a semi good guitar but this sounds rough and harsh is he using a pedal?

  • Its probably a pedal, but his bass could be plugged into an amp which has a distortion knob

  • thanks man im pretty new to playin so this hads helped me a lot ;-p

  • overdrive pedal.

though i recommend saving up and buying a tube amp (nothing beats tube overdrive IMO) im sure you wont be able to get that kind of money any time soon.

try out some bass overdrive pedals, BOSS, Sansamp VT Bass, etc.

  • i understand why thats called evil hand slap..... your not supposed to bitch slap your bass

  • undeadlazen how bout we bitch slap you instead el-creepo

  • That's like saying a violin can only play single notes.

The bass is a very versatile instrument. Check out Zander Zon's Spanish Rain, written for and played by a solo bass.

  • An instrument is meant to play whatever it CAN play. Just base has always been in the background in pop culture. Check out michael manring Selene... it's one of the coolest things I've ever seen and probably you'll see too.

  • No, you're not ONLY supposed to play single notes. You just play whatever you want as long as it sounds good to you.

  • LIES! LIES AND SLANDER!!!

  • why not? it has the same notes as every instrument. =P

  • You're an idiot Inferno... If you know what playing a "chord" is, and to know what one looks like being played, then you should be musically intelligent enough to know that bass is an instrument with which you can play almost as much (some would say more) things as a guitar.

  • people have a hard time grasping that concept though. whenever i play bass and start playing chords, people look at me like i just discovered fire or something.

a lot of people believe think that bass is just some background instrument that only plays single notes.

  • Yeah distorted bass

  • Wewt. Where'd your knobs go???

  • so does your mum

  • HAHAHAHAHA, You're a funny dude!!!!

  • eamonia i think u r jealous of him because he's talented and well u r not

  • hey DK what was your guitar tuned in was it drop D?

  • @mekanikal0existance

    guitar oO ?

  • a bass is still a guitar, bass guitar, electrical guitar, acoustic guitar,...

  • @belgianreaver No it's not... we don't call a viola a violin... or a cello a double bass.

  • @belgianreaver ... Yes and No. The electric bass is an electric guitarist's bastardisation of the upright bass, which is a very different beast indeed to the guitar (it's even the odd one out to the other orchestral string instruments) and if you look at how one plays an upright, you see where a lot of things unique to the bass guitar came from. Thus the bass guitar sort of sits between two worlds, but I think most people will know from experience not to give the bass to a guitarist.

  • That is NASTY good.

  • sounds a little like crawl by kings of leon , top video :D

  • my guitar sounds no where near as awesome as this how do i make mine give off that really raw sound? HELP ME!!!

  • by buying a bass lol

  • a six string doesnt do what a guitar does silly

  • @indehall much to much wis bass already

  • Reminds me of a Snow Patrol track actually, only a lot more distorted :P

  • uhuuuull agressive and amazing! ( what happened with your bass knobs?) and what will you do in Rio ,show ,gigs, some public thing? i live near and if it is possible tell me about.

  • innovative and GOOD!! right on bro!!

  • youve obviously never watched any of his other stuff

  • Spank the bass! Looks funny ;)

  • Just waondering, what happened to the knobs? =P

  • sick shit dude. very nice sound you get out of that. What kind of effect is that? is it straight up distortion? it sounded pretty venomous.

  • how sounds like Death From Above 1979. Those guys are great :D lol.

  • this was like, the coolest sound i have ever lisen to on a bass.

  • Woah hardcore 0_o

  • Hello MarloweDK,

I've seen your name on YouTube quite some times, and I'm going to start play bass soon. I do not feel like taking any lessons at a music school or alike, but I've seen a few of your videos and I thought - maybe you can give me some advice?

    Thanks,

    Sandos

  • hey marlowe as a fellow teacher of sorts what would u suggest i teach to a beginner on bass whos in the 6th grade? Im 15 and my singers dad saw me play bass and asked if i could teach his son how to play(just an extra way for me to get some money). He wants to do slap right away so in his first lesson i taught him about octaves and there use in funky slapping and next lesson its going to be mutes and triplets most likey but im a little bit at a loss at that point.

  • to trav man:

Its hard to teach children, they need to be entertained. For starters its sounds good with octaves, he needs to learn the notenames as well and to make it easy (for you) - find an easy (well technically)song he can play to - ie give it away by RHCP

  • ya i he wants to do RHCP songs as well as RATM which is fairly easy for me to pick out by ear but the note names is a good idea i also gave him a major scale(i forgot what its called) that i did when i first started and i have him playing to that with a metronome

  • to travman:

Don get too ambitious with scales, and find a drumbeat or backing track - to make it fun, it must NOT resemble chore in any way (unless the father's pacing and paying lotsa dineros)

  • i think ill get that drum beat but the scale isnt something to do the whole time while hes learning just to build up his finger speed neways ty for the advice nontheless it will be a majr help for me

  • yooo spanking that bass

    yooo do it well :D

nice sound i love that mm jazz bass :D

  • awesome! what effect/distortion are you using?

  • I have that bass...what aspects of the sound did the new preamp change?

  • its on the amp

  • THANKS FOR THE ADVICE

  • Just had a Sadowsky preamp installed, still some wiring problems, knobs come on and off

  • ah? and does the sadowsy preamp do any good to that bass ? how would you define the difference before & after ? in my experience, there's nothing like the wood, the neck, the bridge, the saddles and the strings that really do change the tone. Electronics can only adjust frequencies and compress but they're not changing the true voice of the instrument - what d'you think ?

  • Its true that the sound is in the wood/metal, but its major improvement over the original crummy preamp, more clarity AND a tone control the original did not have

  • ...oh, and I forgot the pickups of course, they could change some of the tone: what have you tried so far ? Seymour Duncans, Fender vintages, di Marzios, ...?...

  • No, only changed the preamp on this bass, not too technical about my basses in general, so I wouldt know:-)

  • excellent as always(are the knobs gone on your miller bass?) weird question just something i noticed. i just started playing 2 months ago any practice routines you can recommend? thanks

  • Learn your favorite basslines, and get some software or a Korg Pandora to slow tricky things down. Rather practice 1 hour a day then 3 hours every third day.

  • how do you get such a dirty sound but still pretty understandable?

I don't speak much english, hope you understand what I mean. cheers from Argentina, I love how you play

  • Reminds me of John Entwistle.

  • Awsome stuff again Marlowe!
