@Jigaboo123456 Jesus you sound like a loon chomping on the bit in a lunatic asylum; spluttering and throwing yourself at the soft-walled cell, with you laces removed. Paranoid much..
@BunnySpangle1 You have dived into the usual cover of the PC bigot and libtard devoid of valic argument - -allegations of evil and lunacy, stupidity etc. You forgot to accuse me of having a tiny cock
@BunnySpangle1 What a deceitful fraud you are- you KNOW that if I said what I have said here without the shelter of anonymity I'd be arrested and jailed.
The ruling classes throuout the world are desperate to regulate the internet. Everyone in the West KNOWS you have to look over your shoulder before you make a remark about a client group of PC, and your pathetic attempts to deny it clearly illustrate your mendacity. I'm done, last word to you, life's too short.
@Jigaboo123456 It's a simple fact that you are free to degrade yourself via your comments all you like but if you harass people then you break the law because that's where your right to freedom of expression impacts against others right to be free from harm. So stop playing the politically correct white race victim card Poppet.

In the UK today racism-by white British people-is seen as the biggest crime next to paedophillia!Black people,of course, cannot be racist as they are still very much the minority in the UK! But the UK is fast becoming a mixed-race nation-mainly because many white women are very attracted to black men (or many reasons-none being the colour of his skin,of course!) Gollies will be banned in Britain soon-100% right!
The problem with this [and a more well-known issue: golliwogs] is that not every bodying watching it thought of it as racist. Back then it was just some people dancing and singing, all harmless. But unfortunately some people thought that it wasn't right the men should all depict 'coons' and now it is racist. I can understand completely.
Seeing this today is a strange experience. The whole thing seems completely pointless. I don't understand why, even by the late seventies, it was deemed a good idea to have white men do "black face". Why not just do the numbers without the silly face paint? What must black people have thought watching it in the UK at the time? It's embarrassing to think we produced such casually offensive material so relatively recently on TV!
@Dianaemanuel You have summed it up very well. Why this was continued until 1978 just makes no sense to me. I would have imagined that even most white people in Britain would have said 'Hey, this is a bit bloody racist' long before then. Apologists say that there was no intention to be offensive to blacks, but...as you say, why couldn't they have white folks without makeup or actual black people doing the numbers? Was nostalgia for Al Jolson (what a gangling idiot he was) THAT strong?!!
@ProjectFlashlight612 I think that, even today, we shouldn't forget or dismiss the minstrel heritage - it is a culturally valid as any other art form. However, the fact that it was still staggering on in 1978 in such an utterly pointless way seems extraordinary now. The worst of it is that it's not even classic or timeless. As I said above, the 'black face' make up is laughable and freakish. Had it been done with real black men I think the show would have been amazing.
@ProjectFlashlight612 "I would have imagined that even most white people in Britain would have said 'Hey, this is a bit bloody racist' long before then"
Er, no they didn't, as PC bigots hadn't the power and influence they have now, and we didn't want to be ORDERED how to think. There was no harm intended .My mother and father watched it every Saturday, and they were only interested in the music (and my mum the costumes.) Cue race-hustlers and White libtards kicked up a fuss over nothing.
@Jigaboo123456 lol You just hate the fact that liberal English civilisation rejects your dumb views. Grow up and get used to it Poppet. Booo hooo hooo
@BunnySpangle1 economic, social and military military reality is so obvious that even the glib lies of the elite parroted by their dupes are exposed- even the most stupid, smug, and sanctimonious liberal finally "gets it".
I won’t be crowing when it happens, because I’ve seen enough of humanity tearing itself to pieces. I’ve soldiered or worked in parts of the world where it happened, it was sheer folly to invite it here.
Anyway, anyone who favourites “Chan Chan” can’t be all bad.
@BunnySpangle1 There is little that will remain civilised thanks to "English" (I presume you mean “British") liberalism, and it will be the children and grandchildren of both host and immigrant that will pay the full price of liberal folly.
Libtards, the "Useful Idiots" of cultural Marxism may reject " my dumb views," but the sheeple are waking up. Tyrannies like Communism, Fascism and PC eventually collapse- when the
@Jigaboo123456 LOL, If I'd meant British I would have typed British. Anyway, it's utterly pointless and ridiculous to try caricature Western liberals and liberal civilisation as retarded or analogous to communism and fascism. If you believe Western enlightenment world and culture will collapse then you're an idiot. You need to try harder than a silly caricature.
If you were on the Tit anic after it hit the berg, you'd be handing out deckchairs and telling everyone to enjoy the sunshine.
We'll let history decide. I hope for everyone's sake to Christ your right and I'm wrong, but the history of multi-culti throughout the world is intermittent blood letting and Statist tyranny, and the blood of immigrant and host a like will be on the hands of those who planned it and the fools who passively accepted it.
If people were colorblind as they truly say, then they wouldn't find this stereotypical of blacks; For if they thought that this was stereotypical of blacks, then in their biased mind, there would exist some stereotype of black people. Consider the fact that racism goes bothways and can even be derogatory to one's own race; then in that case, how come Barbie dolls, with their pale skin, blue eyes, thin lips, blond hair, are not racist? Anti-racists are racist hypocrites.
This is hilarious! Blacks are not portrayed in a negative light in this clip, so why are they complaining? If they had used black actors, those actors probably would have stolen things from the other actors and from the set.
According to Wikipedia, they did a few episodes without the blackface, but viewers didn't like it, so they went back to blackface.
@sbtbfanatic you say ..'not portrayed in a negative light' then you say..'black actors..would have stolen things from the other actors..' you are a insignifi-cunt shitty arsehole who is obviously racist to the extreme. Admit that you are and i'll leave you to your delusional grandeur!
@Lovafunk69 Don't be so uptight. I only meant that black actors probably would have tried to steal things from the set. If you have been around many black people, you must know that they have a predisposition toward thievery.
@Lovafunk69 Don't be so uptight. I only meant that black actors probably would have tried to steal things from the set. If you have been around many black people, you must know that they have a predisposition toward thievery.
But WHY? I really want to know why Caucasians performed in "blackface" as they call it... I knw some of the history on it, but still can not understand why this was entertaining or why people did it to begin with, ( or what compelled them to continue it?)?
I remember this programme in the 1970's, it used to be on BBC2 . It was beautifully choreographed wasnt it? Times gone by, now idiots accuse this sort of thing as being racist-like the Robertson's golly..
@radioianj But you lot stil fail to understand - whether YOU consider this to be inoffensive and totally unracist is besides the point - black people DID find this - and the Robert's jam golly - racist.
Just because you can't see how it is racist doesn't make it racist. If a large majority of people consider it racist then, sorry, but it is racist.
@radioianj you people wanna mock everthing that's beautiful in this world, when are you gonna learn that nations of colour and sexual organs and everything else that is natural is no joke? Your sense (nonsense) of humour/'entertainment' is strange
@MsTeenBirmingham Ugh, you really think you're special, don't you?. Well, if being young, dumb and full of brummie come counts as special then you've made it. You and your whole overly-PC generation can just get bent... over.
As the late, great Ol' Dirty Bastard from Wu-Tang Clan said, ''God made dirt and dirt bust yo ass"
this is a shameful period of our history. It's shocking that this shit was still on British TV in 1978, especially when only two years later we were watching the new wave of comedy sweep the country and crush the old school underfoot.
Oh get over yourself and lighten up, for crying out aloud. I bet you're so white and so middle class - you'd have to be to summon words such as "shameful" and "shocking". I have black mates who I *know* would simply laugh this video away. Anyway, shouldn't you be busying yourself on a campaign to turn Christmas into Winter Festival or some such... just so we don't "offend" the comparatively tiny [but oh so vocal] minority of Islamists we have in this country? Pft!
I must have looked at all the videos concerning the movie 'White Chicks' (2004), with the [brilliant] Wayans brothers playing two white females in make-up. There is a worrying lack of comment from you, however. Double standards?
Yes, I expected the default ad-hominem of "racist", so little surprise there. Don't let the fact I've had an Egyptian, a Japanese and two black girlfriends and several life-long black mates get in the way of that. I was born and raised in Moss Side, you pleb... where it is pretty much impossible not to make black friends. They're just not the type to get offended by something as silly as this video, unlike white-guilt ridden morons such as yourself.
"The make up is not meant to be what black people look like at all" , Right, but I guess "The Not Black at all and white minstral show" would not have worked so well, 20 MILLION viewers, you tube can get that for a cat playing the piano don't make it worthy, good or of artistic merit or I guess Eastenders is modern Shakespere!
^ Good to know you let Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands off the hook there. Has racism not reached their shores yet, lol?
@MsTeenBirmingham So you expect me to list every single country that didn't think much of racism in the 1970s? You haven't even made your point clear...
@SnappyPenguins It was clear enough for anyone who isn't a complete gimp. However, let me make it crystal clear for the hard of thinking, i.e. you: England is not a nation. It is just one part of the UK. Calling the UK 'England' is as brainless as calling the USA 'California'. I realise, however, that to a dumb twat like you, this is still probably 'not clear'. Fail.
I still say its all a bit naff. It reminds me of the trololol song (type that into youtube and you will see what I mean). Its too crap to be truelly offensive, its just embarrassing really.
Thing is the 'Spanish' thing is merely related to the song ; for other themes, other costumes were used. No one would bat an eyelid at the white guys these actually are wearing Spanish costumes for this song WITHOUT black make up. This was kind of 'Chorus Line' performances like from stage musicals which people love. And there were other guests on the show too to add the variety ; many of them well known. The singing and dancing of the Ministrels is what folk like and it's good too of it's kind
This show had NOTHING to do with racism ; it represented a theatrical caricature of a particular set of traditional performances popular for over a hundred years ; was not meant to be taken that seriously at all
Wow, such a short time ago that people were so bloody stupid. How is this entertainment? Thank the gods that we live in the time we do...what utter crap this program is.
@perydwyn NO, I think the complete opposite ; this show was really popular for years when I was growing up - it is NOW that people have lost the plot, so paranoid and obsessed with political correctness that they're affraid virtually anything is 'racist' and I dont have a racist bone in my body. They banned 'Golliwog' soft dolls which kids of ALL colours loved to play with and the logo off Robinson's Jam & Marmalade, also popular for years
I think it is more the case that some people just got left behind with the changing of the times. I am by no means politically correct, but watching this, it just seems ridiculous that people thought that bad variety shows with blacked up white guys (pretending to be spanish I might add lol), were once concidered entertaining. I dont think its hatefully racist, I just find it a bit stupid (and I must admit I laughed a lot watching this, as did my friends, but at it not with it.
@perydwyn As I said, millions enjoyed it for reasons not to do with the make up. The make up distracts from the fact that there were similar interludes in many 'variety' shows at that time that aren't criticised as this is. There were variety shows of this kind aplenty then and this one was a bit past it's sell by date as it had been on for about 20 years then. But this was before we had to accept wall to wall 'reality' shows which dominate now & I dont know how BGT passes for entertainment
But why did they want to black up like that? Its not like they are playing at being black guys even, just singing and dancing with their faces blacked up...is the black face a neccessary part of it? This isnt any less brain deadening than modern reality shows. Just watch this video with a critical eye (ignore the racism etc), and see what we have here. It is really low quality entertainment, completely analogous with modern trash.
@perydwyn Well, about 'wanting' to black up, that was the identity of the group. It's history was in American musical theatre known as 'Blackface' which was extremely popular from the 1830s for over 100 years. It has been said that it helped popularize black culture in those times. Subsequently performers as Al Jolson were very popular (of the original 'Jazz Singer' movie fame). Incidentally there were long running stage show musicals of the tv series which made Guinness BORs for attendance no.s
@TheKenfig Please explain to me how a White Man blacked up, while singing " a new coon in town" or some other witty ditty to an all white audience is helping popularise black culture!
@dechips I shouldn't have to answer such a glib question which seems more concerned with how that question looks, particularly when the the question attempts to cross-examine what I did not say at all
@TheKenfig Blackface minstrels and coon shouters did nothing to popularise black culture. It demonised and ridiculed black people in America. It is a shameful piece of American Entertainment history. For the BBC to pay homage to this dreadful spectacle for so long was embarrasing if not downright offensive. Then again I dont look back dewy eyed at golliwogs, or crap sitcoms like "Love thy neighbour" either.
@dechips Yes it did. It ridicules no one anymore than Mr. Punch ridicules all people who have red noses. The BBC 'paid homage' as YOU call it to public demand for a variety show which included hugely popular singers, songs, choreography, costumes and dancers. This show was SO popular that the stage version based on the tv show made The Guinness Book Of Records for amounts who went and paid to see it. Millions of kids of ALL colours loved Golliwog dolls and only thick people didnt realise....
@TheKenfig So tell me exactly how a white man entertaining a white audience (no coloreds) by lampooning the worse racial stereotypes - is making popular black culture? Please tell me and I'll show you a Louis Armstrong or a Billie Holliday...
@dechips You read NOTHING I write. Also you make stuff up as you go along e.g. "no coloureds" who said there were no coloureds in the audience or at home watching ?. Dont agree with that shit at all. Warren Mitchell said loads of black people came on to him and said "Ha ha, we love you and the show" etc. even when the character he played was a racist bigot. I told you, they were 'lampooning' no one. There are NO racial stereotypes in there, just performance make-up. Not offensive
@TheKenfig Im not talking about this utter bobbins - Im talking about the blackface minstrels in the US - who used to perform to all white audiences..because black people werent allowed in! Its you who seems to be missing the point! Please go and do some research into what a blackface minstrel really was and how it did nothing ever to popularise black culture.
@dechips I'm missing NOTHING ; make up your mind what you want to criticise. You started moaning about THIS show. My point is it was bloody hugely popular with all colours drawing in 20 million viewers per week on tv. The make up is not meant to be what black people look like at all with white make up around the eyes and mouths with all the males wearing white gloves. The only people with hang ups about it typically, are SOME whites ; blacks dont mind this stuff, many have told me themselves
....that shows like 'Love Thy Neighbour' & 'Till Death Us Do Part' , of which the former is a less complex copy, SATIRIZE racism for the stupidity it is and were written and performed by staunch anti-racists like Johnny Speight & Warren Mitchell
Wow,darkies!!! Just wish they would make shows like this today! Good, wholesome famiy entertainment. Before anyone starts,I would NOT have a problem if real darkies "whited" their faces to play white people, Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it???
Shahideurope - when you vomit shit, you have to eat it back! It's irresponsible viewers like you that creates chaos in the world! When you are ignorant, stay dumb. When you open your mouth, you just embarrass yourself!
I love the minstrels - they were the hardest drinking act in show business you know!
Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows, and later vaudeville, in which performers create a stereotyped caricature of a black person. most of the minstels on British TV were Welsh because of their lovely voices.
@jeremylum88 since when did comments on youtube have to be relevant? this is not a court of law and you're not a judge, my comment is as relevant as yours or anyone else's.
This is racist. The reason is simple, it is the undertone. The women are white, the men are blacked up, it feeds to a sort of weird paranoia and fascination with inter-racial relationships. It's just horrible. If the actors were simply white or actually black, there would be no problem but blacking up the white actors suggests that it is something forbidden and that is racist.
@amalek80 yeah except racism against white people doesn't stop them from running the fucking country. we screw over blacks so hard, i'm gonna let em say what they want
@Redsrevenge You talk as if it's some sort of crime that white people run a white country. When do we screw over blacks? We've been far too accommodating to them.
A weird thing about watching this is there's no indication as to WHY these singers and dancers are whirling around in blackface. Like, WHAT'S going on?? I was reading someone's childhood memories of this show, and they asked their parents why didn't the show just hire black performers...and the parents said, "It's funnier this way." (????)
In my opinion this is not derogatory or demeaning towards any particular group. The main fault of the show is it has made a bad and somewhat throwaway racial distinction between blacks and whites, which leaves it open to criticism from people of a strong anti-racism persuation.
@lavanderlilly Clearly some people did find it offensive seeing as their were petitions from the 60s onwards asking to have this show taken off the air.
@MsTeenBirmingham You obiviously have problems my dear. I was a child when this was on tv and people enjoyed the music and the costumes (albiet asunaj not everyone as being a child just enjoying the entertainment of it all didn't know others were offended :). but lets get back to MsTeen, Didn't your mother ever wash your mouth out with soap or tobasco sauce. Calling a person what you did because on a Sunday in the 60's they watched this and thought is was great you have an unatural agression
@castlekingside28 To understand why this was hurtful you have to realize how it fits into a tradition of humiliating portrayal of non-whites in media.
In earlier episodes the black face is used in a tradition of demeaning mockery.
The singing and dancing is fine. Maintaining a tradition of caricture and exclusion is what people found, and still find so disturbing about this show. Why was the black face necessary at all?
Whereas the 1970s had Pink Floyd, the Sex Pistols, and Doctor Who (groovy, man!), it also gave us shite like The Black and White Minstrell Show, On The Buses, etc, etc, etc. Some things are best consigned to history. Here is one show that will never make its way to DVD!
I don't see how any of that video is racist at all. No white bedsheets burning crosses or skin head nazis or nasty racist words used at all so please explain to me how it is racist by any means. Its Just a colourful dance routine that wasn't seen for what 'the people' force it to be. Its absolutly no different that when the wayan brothers dressed up as white women in the film white chicks ABSOLUTLY NO DIFFERENT! But is that racist? Fuck no, its done by black people so thats okay.
@NYCluv no i think it was a stage the world had to go through as part of a healing process toward equality i mean trpic thunder.. robert downey jr blacked up to play a black stereo type sergeant and it was hilarious i havtn heard a compliant yet have you? white chicks its just funny i think every ones just about ready to poke fun at every one and everything... ALL THANKS TO FAMILY GUY AND SOUTHPARK XD
@videofxuniverse see, blackface minstrels have been arounf in the first half of the 20th century, meant to depict people of african decent as stupid, slow, lazy... basically all negative steriotypes that othe people created for black people. so the fact that THIS was sooo close to the eighties is disturbing because, brittain released their slaves(with no jim crow type laws following the release) wayy before americans did. so its considerd "not racist". yet, buy it still haveing blackface
@videofxuniverse minstrel shows, it reveals that europe isnt as "equal" as we all thought it was. and if black people do black face minstrels, is just like reverse deiscrimination, and to me, isnt acceptable(yes, im black) in fact, it makes me think how desperate or hateful a person must be in order to do things like this. for black people acting as white people, look at the movie. the waynes bros were playing not nessicarilly a "white" personality, but a "valley girl" personality, that ALL
I find it hard to believe that show lasted for 10 years. No question the Blacks who lived in the UK either changed the channel or went to the pubs and clubs.
I was at work and an sikh ridiculed my Black Country accent. He called me a racist when I put a turban (made out of paper towel) on my head and talked in an Indian accent, but what was he doing in the first place? Then I went through the 5 k's and he was only practicing one of them. I now live and work in Romania and I get the mickey taken out of me for being a Brit, but I give it back and there's no offence taken either way
Yeah I should coco, in ethnic monitoring I cant tick a box that says ENGLISH...and have to PROVE my entitlement to work in my own country. So I tell you politically correct arseholes to take your stupid propoganda and cram it up your arse!!!!
For me its very simple, my parents loved this show, I hated it, it had nothing of interest to me. But the fact that it was axed to pander to political correctness is completely wrong.
I never heard a single coloured person complain about any kind of racism with regard to the black and white minstrel show back in the day...
Erm, how come its not racist when Eddie Murphy puts on prosphetics and impersonates WHITE folk? I am a white man, and was NOT the least bit offended when he did this. I this ''racist'' crap has got WAY out of proportion!! Black People grow up, you are making yourselves look very stupid. Or is it the WHITE folks complaining too much about this sorta stuff?? Interesting!!
@wanderer1955 Eddie Murphy was not racist because, just as you said, he was impersonating white people. There's a difference between that and "black face." Black face is the tradition of wearing black makeup that is darker than any black person, leaving only the mouth either painted white or red. Just Google "black face" and you'll see many examples of what that looks like. Throughout history, even black people had to put on black face to perform in minstrel shows.
No one is saying they are racist but are you honestly saying that you can not see that the minstrels are at the very least dealing with racist imagery?
@"JellyKimSugarBoom1" (a made up name I reckon),there's so much destruction all over the world and all you can do is complain about me. All you need is me. They're actually paying tribute to the negro singers, blacked up to resemble negros.
HUmmm how strange, They weren't it seems actually taking the piss out of black ppl?
It is obviously wrong that they were blacking up their faces, but I dont understand the relevance of them being blacked up tho, i thought it would be more like them acting stupidly but they just seem 2 be singing...someone reply im quite interested in this.
This is remarkably similar to what happens today...

However, the fact that it was still staggering on in 1978 in such an utterly pointless way seems extraordinary now. The worst of it is that it's not even classic or timeless. As I said above, the 'black face' make up is laughable and freakish. Had it been done with real black men I think the show would have been amazing.
Dianaemanuel 3 months ago
@ProjectFlashlight612 "I would have imagined that even most white people in Britain would have said 'Hey, this is a bit bloody racist' long before then"
Er, no they didn't, as PC bigots hadn't the power and influence they have now, and we didn't want to be ORDERED how to think. There was no harm intended .My mother and father watched it every Saturday, and they were only interested in the music (and my mum the costumes.) Cue race-hustlers and White libtards kicked up a fuss over nothing.

This isn't racist.
Anti-racists are racist hypocrites.
pooptickler1337 4 months ago
This is hilarious! Blacks are not portrayed in a negative light in this clip, so why are they complaining? If they had used black actors, those actors probably would have stolen things from the other actors and from the set.
According to Wikipedia, they did a few episodes without the blackface, but viewers didn't like it, so they went back to blackface.

@perydwyn Especially the bit where the 2 guys are singing their gibberish to the weird disembodied horse head thing lol
perydwyn 8 months ago
Thing is the 'Spanish' thing is merely related to the song ; for other themes, other costumes were used. No one would bat an eyelid at the white guys these actually are wearing Spanish costumes for this song WITHOUT black make up. This was kind of 'Chorus Line' performances like from stage musicals which people love. And there were other guests on the show too to add the variety ; many of them well known. The singing and dancing of the Ministrels is what folk like and it's good too of it's kind
TheKenfig 8 months ago
This show had NOTHING to do with racism ; it represented a theatrical caricature of a particular set of traditional performances popular for over a hundred years ; was not meant to be taken that seriously at all
TheKenfig 8 months ago
Wow, such a short time ago that people were so bloody stupid. How is this entertainment? Thank the gods that we live in the time we do...what utter crap this program is.
perydwyn 8 months ago
@perydwyn NO, I think the complete opposite ; this show was really popular for years when I was growing up - it is NOW that people have lost the plot, so paranoid and obsessed with political correctness that they're affraid virtually anything is 'racist' and I dont have a racist bone in my body. They banned 'Golliwog' soft dolls which kids of ALL colours loved to play with and the logo off Robinson's Jam & Marmalade, also popular for years
TheKenfig 8 months ago 2
@TheKenfig
I think it is more the case that some people just got left behind with the changing of the times. I am by no means politically correct, but watching this, it just seems ridiculous that people thought that bad variety shows with blacked up white guys (pretending to be spanish I might add lol), were once concidered entertaining. I dont think its hatefully racist, I just find it a bit stupid (and I must admit I laughed a lot watching this, as did my friends, but at it not with it.
perydwyn 8 months ago
@perydwyn As I said, millions enjoyed it for reasons not to do with the make up. The make up distracts from the fact that there were similar interludes in many 'variety' shows at that time that aren't criticised as this is. There were variety shows of this kind aplenty then and this one was a bit past it's sell by date as it had been on for about 20 years then. But this was before we had to accept wall to wall 'reality' shows which dominate now & I dont know how BGT passes for entertainment
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig
It is really low quality entertainment, completely analogous with modern trash.
perydwyn 8 months ago
@perydwyn Well, about 'wanting' to black up, that was the identity of the group. It's history was in American musical theatre known as 'Blackface' which was extremely popular from the 1830s for over 100 years. It has been said that it helped popularize black culture in those times. Subsequently performers as Al Jolson were very popular (of the original 'Jazz Singer' movie fame). Incidentally there were long running stage show musicals of the tv series which made Guinness BORs for attendance no.s
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig Please explain to me how a White Man blacked up, while singing " a new coon in town" or some other witty ditty to an all white audience is helping popularise black culture!
dechips 8 months ago
@dechips I shouldn't have to answer such a glib question which seems more concerned with how that question looks, particularly when the the question attempts to cross-examine what I did not say at all
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig Blackface minstrels and coon shouters did nothing to popularise black culture. It demonised and ridiculed black people in America. It is a shameful piece of American Entertainment history. For the BBC to pay homage to this dreadful spectacle for so long was embarrasing if not downright offensive. Then again I dont look back dewy eyed at golliwogs, or crap sitcoms like "Love thy neighbour" either.
dechips 8 months ago
@dechips Yes it did. It ridicules no one anymore than Mr. Punch ridicules all people who have red noses. The BBC 'paid homage' as YOU call it to public demand for a variety show which included hugely popular singers, songs, choreography, costumes and dancers. This show was SO popular that the stage version based on the tv show made The Guinness Book Of Records for amounts who went and paid to see it. Millions of kids of ALL colours loved Golliwog dolls and only thick people didnt realise....
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig So tell me exactly how a white man entertaining a white audience (no coloreds) by lampooning the worse racial stereotypes - is making popular black culture? Please tell me and I'll show you a Louis Armstrong or a Billie Holliday...
dechips 8 months ago
@dechips You read NOTHING I write. Also you make stuff up as you go along e.g. "no coloureds" who said there were no coloureds in the audience or at home watching ?. Dont agree with that shit at all. Warren Mitchell said loads of black people came on to him and said "Ha ha, we love you and the show" etc. even when the character he played was a racist bigot. I told you, they were 'lampooning' no one. There are NO racial stereotypes in there, just performance make-up. Not offensive
TheKenfig 8 months ago
@TheKenfig Im not talking about this utter bobbins - Im talking about the blackface minstrels in the US - who used to perform to all white audiences..because black people werent allowed in! Its you who seems to be missing the point! Please go and do some research into what a blackface minstrel really was and how it did nothing ever to popularise black culture.
dechips 8 months ago
@dechips I'm missing NOTHING ; make up your mind what you want to criticise. You started moaning about THIS show. My point is it was bloody hugely popular with all colours drawing in 20 million viewers per week on tv. The make up is not meant to be what black people look like at all with white make up around the eyes and mouths with all the males wearing white gloves. The only people with hang ups about it typically, are SOME whites ; blacks dont mind this stuff, many have told me themselves

Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows, and later vaudeville, in which performers create a stereotyped caricature of a black person. most of the minstels on British TV were Welsh because of their lovely voices.

In my opinion this is not derogatory or demeaning towards any particular group. The main fault of the show is it has made a bad and somewhat throwaway racial distinction between blacks and whites, which leaves it open to criticism from people of a strong anti-racism persuation.

wanderer1955 1 year ago
@wanderer1955 Eddie Murphy was not racist because, just as you said, he was impersonating white people. There's a difference between that and "black face." Black face is the tradition of wearing black makeup that is darker than any black person, leaving only the mouth either painted white or red. Just Google "black face" and you'll see many examples of what that looks like. Throughout history, even black people had to put on black face to perform in minstrel shows.
