hey, i thought the film was very well shot, u used some very interesting and effective camera angles and the film had a nice feel to it. i do feel that the plot needed further developing in order to fulfill what the film could have been. overall great job though. just wondering if attending ecuad would be a good choice for me as i am looking for universities for next year. please reply.
@acadhdspeaks Hey thanks for taking the time to watch and write a response to my short film. It's been a long time since I made this video, and I feel I've improved my skills over the past few months! Hopefully people will agree when I release my next short film around the end of this year!
As for your question, I'm assuming you're asking me about the quality of the film program at ECUAD?
@luckyme429 well ya, i mean ive been looking at sfu, ubc and ryerson and i was really just wondering if ecuad can hold its own against those schools. as far as facilities and faculty go as well as quality of equipment and what u learn over four years, is it a good school?
@acadhdspeaks well I've never been to SFU or UBC, so I can speak about my thoughts on ECU. I think it really depends on your financial situations and what you want out of your 4 years program. ECU focuses more on "ideas" instead of technical skills, which can be a big disadvantage when you leave the program to work in the industry. It's a great school if you plan on being a freelance, independent filmmaker instead of working in the union and doing physical labor in the beginning of your career.
@acadhdspeaks Hey sorry for the late reply. If you expect to hit big and get lots of employment offers after graduating from the program, it most likely will NOT happen...So far right now, I just have a full-time job to pay my bills and work on my passion independent projects on the side. That's the way I want to expand my career. The other choice is joining the union, but from what I heard are long hours and long devotion (that can last for years) of a lot of unpleasant labor.
@acadhdspeaks long story short, it will be a long journey. I expected some kind of overnight success after graduation and finishing my grad film, and I was sorely disappointed.
@acadhdspeaks As far as tuition goes, ECU isn't too expensive. It will cost you around 4 grand per year, which is way cheaper compare to a school say...VFS. Also, you can get a lot of experience just by doing PA work on filmshoots on the side. Craigslist is your best friend, and check out the union's website and see what film productions are going on and offer your help on the sets. There are also lots of books and tutorials on youtube as well.
I liked a lot: actors, the expressions os his faces, the natural way in what they talk. I am spaniard and I haven't understand very much the conversations but I have imagined that one of the friends best like to be in the closet and the other reproachs him it because the plot of the project was great. I didn't know the word "diffidence", in spanish is "timidez" and in a more accurate way "falta de seguridad en uno mismo". Saludos!!!
this is the best thing my friend and i have ever seen. please try to make something of yourself. keep on keeping on. you can go places if you just stay dedicated.
Ideally viewers shouldn't have to read the comments after watching a film to find out what the film is about. In any case, the comments to-date strike me as guesses, not interpretations in the usual sense.
Intercuts & flashbacks or forward & stream of consciousness are all fine techniques, but they don't work without some clarity.
I don't know how much ended up on the cutting floor, so to speak. But the project is over & I'm guessing there's not enough material to create that clarity. Too bad.
Are you joking me?!?! This is (sadly) exactly what I've been feeling for the past month! I'm finding this brilliant right now.
My interpretation: Darrel was writing a suicide note finding it too hard to cope with his sexuality. His depression is affecting his work, but he's also setting himself up to fail because he still feels like a disappointment. Disappointment from his parents (I'm guessing) because he's gay and tries to make up for it through a college degree, etc. to show his parents
that he is successful, he can survive on his own, he still has things he's happy and passionate about. He quit his "project" with Ryan because he felt he was putting too much of his heart and true self out and feared people might find out about his sexuality. Ryan then comes along and tells him he's hurting others more by living this lie and he'll never be happy like that. Ending: Darrel reconsiders committing suicide? While Darrel has accomplished a college degree, I think he did it to make his
parents happy and not for himself. And more importantly, he sees Ryan really cares about him, and considers his own happiness.
If this was not the author's intention, I apologize if I accidentally insulted anyone!
Directing: I interpret the short, snappy takes as the confusion that's going on inside Darrel's head. Also, contrast between how closely zoomed in we are and the distance that Darrel feels as a character towards other people. Intentional or not, it's very captivating. Great job!
@DynapubsA lol I agree. Especially in the beginning, there's not enough to setup to justify the story later in the film. Now looking back at it, I feel the entire piece is a bit too compressed.
Thanks for watching the film and your comments! I greatly appreciate it!
@luckyme429 There seems to be a disconnect between the first part and what follows. The film set us up for an issue that is never followed up. A failing writer gets a "helper" he doesn't want and how is he going to handle it. OK. Then suddenly we are dealing with the much overworked theme of coming out. I'll give you an A+ for taking a more realistic view -- for asking if it is not a selfish thing to do. At least you are not that shallow.

Ryan Erwin isn't a good actor, but definitely is a handsome man. He really made all the issues of this bad executed short film worth my time.
