I have a stock sound card and have a lot of latency. If I get something like an M-Audio interface, will I be able to use it as a device on Sonar and not have latency?

The key ASIO drivers instead of DirectX. A standard soundcard with the reg. windows drivers will have bad latency, making live effects or recording a new track in time with a pre-existing track very difficult. A firewire interface should have an ASIO driver included. I have a Tascam FireOne with Ableton Live lite, & the diff between base soundcard IO & firewire with ASIO driver is stark. I rec a track with effects while monitoring an unrecorded track with diff. effects: no detectable latency!
