  • Spine chilling improvisation and how sharp chambers was there.

  • grande grande johny, para mi es una interpretacion-leccion

  • quando ancora la televisione italiana trasmetteva bella musica...

    GREAT MUSICANS!

  • nice!!

  • Amazing. Truly a master musician.

  • Matinale!

  • ADOPA!!!!

  • what guitar is he playing here?

  • He's playing a Gibson Jonny Smith. I think I'm right in saying he had the Bigsby tailpiece custom installed.

  • A mind blowing performance from John...great to see that beautiful archtoptop guitar with synth... a unique look and sound.

  • No synth there, just some chorus and reverb-that's it! :)

  • Is anyone else digging the drums, who is it?

  • Dennis Chambers

  • sheesh, such hateful stuff being posted on a Mclaughlin video. Ironic and sad.

  • John Mclaughlin said once: "If you play something you know, then it is not real. The most beautiful thing in the world is to play something for the first time in your life"

He is the most influential guitarist in the world.

  • That is why I called Mclaughlin the guitar poet of the century. I petty those who can't understand his music. I can't think of a day passing without listening or playing some of john's music, and that is giving me the greatest joy.

  • You could use another god.

  • Mclaughin is a genius he one of the few who carry coltrane's legacy on their shoulders

  • You should put your video on YouTube and show him how to play.

  • Thanks for the encouragement. Sorry he doesn't inspire me to play like other artists. Although I liked some of his work with Miles.

  • I just had a "visual" of actually putting a bridle on him with bits in his mouth saying "Whoa! You're playing too fast, improvising too much, and taking too many chances!" (regarding "Someone needs to rein him in.") To each his own though, I respect your opinion.

  • Garyquitar. I will guess by your name that your are a very talented musican. I guess I was thinking if he could pull his penchant for speed back a bit, he could phrase and emote more, increase the beauty of the music. I does remind me a a mouse running around on the strings. Maybe I have too many mice in my country home!

  • Idiot!!!!!!!! Fuck off!!!!

  • dood its not that serious, its a website with music? what has made you so angry?

  • he has alot of good pre miles stuff that is in the same vien as the eraly fusion stuff, you should check that out. also tony williams lifetime first album "emergency" and his first album extropalations. all very good. and miroslav vituos's first album as well.

  • Years ago, I went to a Mahavishnu/Mclaughin concert. We had seats in the front section. We left about 15 minutes into the program. More than loud, it was something I could not process. I think Jean Luc Ponty was with him.

  • You're right. You are the assest to the community here with you insightful comments and command of the English(?) language. What was I thinking.

  • hyamarick if you can't appreciate this music, at least shut up, and don't try to teach what you don't understand. Grow up

  • Thanks for revealing your intellect here on YouTube.

  • I ususally scream when tortured, but in this case for your sake I'll stop writing you.

  • Believe it or not, it sounds like he's actually doing a little sweep picking here ... Remember reading last year that he was very impressed with Gambale's playing & was actually working on a few sweep picking techniques ...

  • if you are used to alternate pick it is easier to switch to sweeping than the other way, but by the way I like Gambale's playing too.

  • Sure Jhon has a lot more technic, chops than Santana. And he is very musical in it's application. Like him a lot. Santana still is one of my favorite guitar player. he gets dissed for going main stream, but he still does deliver magical moments. To me it really does not matter if you can do it with few notes or 10.000 notes, whatever takes you to the realm of musical bliss it all good to me.

  • Listen John's and Carlo's playing on "A Love Supreme" from "Love,Devotion,Surrender", it will make your hair stand on end its so incredible.

  • John McLauglin, Allan Holdsworth, Robert Fripp, Jeff Beck and lower your voice.

  • Santana back then wa nice. Now he is pretty crappy. Throwing out the same 'latino' solos over any dickheads pop track. Mclaughlin was always on a higher level. But Caravanaserai (sp?!) etc. gets Santana a free pass anywhere. Shame he couldn't keep that approach to music going.

  • I agree with you. I quite liked Santana´s playing on MOONFLOWER (ca. 1977), but since then he hasn´t done much special (in my humble opinion. McLaughlin´s playing was and still is on a much higher technical and compositional level.

  • Yes you are totally right I see Carlos reaching his climax on Moonflower after that nothing real special came still he is a great musician, I really like his playing on LP´s like Caravanserai & the live record Lotus.

  • Santana is a nice guitarist, but if I was him I woulnd´t dare stand on the same stage as John. Yes, John is a consumate gentleman :-)

  • Is there a harder piece of music to play anywhere? I haven't heard one.

  • I saw mahavishnu orchestra at the university of miami in 1972, standing 10 feet away...what a freaking incredible experience

  • he doesnt give any lesson?

  • It's just a phrase, meaning if you play improvised jazz guitar you would do yourself a great service by studying what john is doing here.

  • John McLaughlin is the best goddamn gutiarist. Alive. Ever.

  • nope.

  • yes.

  • yes.

  • I saw them in Firenze-Italy on 1993. Three monsters at work, John is wonderful and he's one of the guitar masters.

  • John McLaughlin must have been the consumate gentleman not to have blown Carlos Santana off the stage back in the Love, Devotion, Surrender days! LOL!

  • Oh, my friend but he did! even if he never meant to. :)

  • No way. McLaughlin and Santana sounded phenomenal together live. McLaughlin had far better chops, but they certainly complimented each other's playing like no others. I wish they'd do more...

  • Amen

  • Sweet Jesus.

  • "Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra" by Walter Kolosky.

    Allaboutjazz.com says:

"Kolosky has finally righted a wrong, delivering a book that is as factual an account of the group's rise and fall as will likely ever be published…”

Walter Kolosky says: …it is my turn to pay the music back. “Power, Passion and Beauty” is my offering."

  • Saw them in Cologne.

  • me too, it wasn´t very simple to hear without this band ...

  • Btw, havent seen a single Miles video here yet. And btw, this band is nearly Lifetime

  • Joey de francisco is mega talented...but...he aint no larry young, then again, who could be? He's untouchable.

  • Missing one key element. The world is missing him. Be careful about your choice in doctors! Peace
