  • I tried to click the 'x' on the ads at 0:55

  • i would pay.

  • selling out is alienating your original fanbase in order to gain a larger, more mainstream fanbase. I don't think that being concerned about the money involved with nerdfighteria is inherently selling out, as the products that hank and john offer are true to the ideas of nerdfighters, but being concerned with money can lead to selling out.

  • 1.) do you like messing with your hair 2.) you always expand my vocabulary with every video :D my comma. arts teacher is very impressed

  • Both the ads today are asking me about my artificial hip that I don't have and asking if it has failed me.

  • selling out means selling your beliefs values and ideas and being a complete jerk you could never do that no matter how hard you try

  • D: I trust you enough at this point to know you're not paying to increase world suck.

  • A.

  • I would pay to watch you guys...

  • So your saying I should click on lots and lots of mail order bride ads?

  • selling out is when someone (musician, writer, artist, etc.) becomes overly focused on the merchandising aspect of their art. Or when someone starts shaping their art to sell well, instead of doing it to be art. Or, where an Artist is part of an ethics and morals guided artistic movement, the artist betrays those ethics or morals; example: Bob Dylan being a prominent member of the early sixties folk puritan movement, and then switching to rock and roll

  • Coincidentally, the ad that's showing for me is for a free quiz to see if your unborn child is a boy or girl. John points directly to it, very enthusiastically, a couple of times, due to the sidebar's former location. Or is he trying to promote it?!?!?!?! *crazy eyes*

  • i make your mum jokes with my sister, then your mums face joke and we continue along that line

  • Comment removed

  • one of the reasons i love the vlogbrothers is that they dont accept advertising money or anything. its just their honest opinions, i believe i have chosen good role models

  • The your mom jokes in your family can't be any worse than the ones in mine. My mom makes your mom jokes. To her children.

    I wish I were kidding.

  • so sweaty...

  • i saw a muslum singals add once.

  • I like the open communication you guys have with your audience, us nerdfighters. It's really considerate and I think a really advanced way of working. It just shows how smart you can not only acknowledge what's going on in the community, but be completely open to what we think about the way you guys run your channel. :)

  • okay... when the ad for "do you suck at guitar" came up who tried to X it out... I know I did

  • what did a sidebar look like?

  • This video was a long time ago (i'm having a VBs marathon) but i feel the need to say that i pretty much trust you two to do kinda the right thing, you've never led nerdfighteria astray this far, i'm comfortable in my trust that you won't sell out.

  • sidebar... times have changed so much.....

  • I would pay to watch your videos!! .....if I had enough money....

  • I think selling out is what Nitrome did. on there top games, between every other level on bad ice cream, it says you cannot continue until you watch this add.

  • I trust you!

  • Selling out is not when you sell stuff you have made and are proud of. Selling out would be like if Hank started endorsing Hummer.

  • It pay 20 a year

  • Id totally pay for Vlogbrothers videos.

  • Muppets, cheating, and MSN

  • Mine are Russian Women and Unplanned Pregnancy and Tough Love Miami?

  • Comment removed

  • on the contrary, my brother and I often make 'your mom' jokes at each other's expense. Often when our mother is in the same room as us.

    She finds it hilarious.

    Our Mum is awesome :)

  • @HoliHallow my and my twin sister and my brother do the same. often when she's in the room. oddly, she doesn't respond. but we take her silence as assent. :D

  • Selling out is when you go against your beliefs in order to gain profit.

And you puffs are mad in this video John. Purely mad.

  • WHY WON'T YOU COME TO CANADA?

WHAT DID WE EVER DO TO YOU?

BESIDES JUSTIN BIEBER I AM GENUINELY SORRY ABOUT HIM.

    that is all.

  • @commenter2498 I think Michael J. Fox, Jim Carrey, Dan Akroyd, and Rush more than make up for him :)

  • @commenter2498 i literally lowled when i saw this

  • Your mum is my mum?

  • these videos are a way in which John communictaes with his brother Hank, so when he says 'your mum ismy mum' he is actually talking to Hank.

hope that answers your question :)

  • You don't sell out. I'm glad you tell people that you wrote books.

How would I have read them otherwise? :)

  • Selling out is when you compromise your beliefs for money.

  • @ThatWeirdo04 or when your belief IS money. :)

  • Selling out isn't promoting your own hard work, its promoting someone else's without your honest opinion.

  • keep up the good work, and I don't mind you posting when your books are coming out, even if I haven't read any of them (I'm thinking about trading a squirrel for a copy of looking for alaska though)

  • bahaha as soon as he started talking aout the ads, i look to the right: Muslim Singles Online! ohhhh... nerdfighters!

  • My ad is for the national guard. And the picture is a guy holding a bible. *Refresh.* Mail Order Bride! And in Hank's video about too much love can kill you, the ad was cat food :)

  • The first time I watched this video it had an ad for Mail-Order Brides. This time, it's for Skin Care. Where am I supposed to get my Mail-Order Brides now?! Though, with better skin, I could have a better shot at getting a real bride. *Click*

  • you guys arent selling out. this channel is all you and so are ur songs and ur books. you guys are awesome and i actually want to know whn ur books are coming out john! and whn your CD is avaiable for purchase, hank! u guys are amazing and we watch you because we love you, and you work so hard on your channel. i dont give a hooey if you talk about something you're selling, because its always to do with u or nerdfighters, not some strange company that just pays u to say or promote shit.

  • A! Bonus Question: Selling out is when someone just SO awesome goes unawesome because they care too much about money and not enough about their amazing fans!

  • I don't really have an issue with product placement, as long as it's not completely untasteful and annoying. Products in the background, 10 seconds devoted to product advertisement, specific use of a brand... that's fine. If people are dumb enough that it affects them, that's on them. And honestly I think it's the future of the movie/tv industry because everyone pirates their stuff anyway.

  • Cool socks, bro :D

  • Comment removed

  • In 2011, I'm still getting russian mail order bride ads.

  • Why'd you become such a sellout?

  • my mom tells me your mom jokes.

    it's weird.

  • Id pay for VB videos! maybe $100 a year.

OR make a secret channel and make say 1 video every 2 weeks BUT all the videos are private, but if you donate to charity you get emailed the links! WIN WIN

    DFBA

  • I think someone sells out when they base there whole channel on a specific product they don't even like because they were paid to.

  • i hav add blocker so it skips in-video ads and ads next to the video HA!

  • When you pointed at the "sidebar", you actually pointed at an ad to find an asian girlfriend. Way to be, John.

  • Basically, I hope that you use money that you earned for yourself, and donate money that I give to you to give to charities. But I think you already do that. ;)

  • 77,777 views! :D

  • C.

    Your definition.

  • my vids have no ads

  • @kotraquin becaus you are not a youtube partner, good "how to become a youtube partner" if you would like to try and be accepted.

  • Huh, I had two ads, one saying to get a mail order Russian bride and one for Google AdWords

  • I think it's perfectly fine to get paid for saying that that silly string is awesome if you truly believe it and have felt that way before you got paid to say it, I don't think its fine to use something that a company sent you once and say "oh its amazing I love it you should buy it and this is my honest opinion I swear" I mean i guess its not wrong cuz its like any other commercial endorsement but I think then it is selling out.

  • Selling out= seeing you talk about netflix for 2 minutes and just drains the over all feel of the vid

  • Nyahaha the book kept falling down XD

  • I got an ad for a Russian wife. It made me lol. Then want to cry. Then want to liberate East Berlin. Then I realized I was a few years late.

  • I just realized something... I'm not getting ads anymore, on your channel or on here... WHAT IS GOING ON, YOUTUBE? WILL WE HAVE TO PAY TO WATCH VIDEOS SOON? O_o

  • @mirosango14 do you have an ad blocker in your browser?

  • @TheSweetDream you know, I think I do... *facepalm* FALSE ALARM!

  • @mirosango14 hahaha

  • Both the ads I got for this video are for Super Mario Kart Xtreme so, Win on your part :3

  • I think selling out is when you you go aginst who you are, or what you stand for to get money or fame.

  • Has anybody tried the cached audio? It is Hillarious. "So Nerdfighters" become "Sober Fighters"

  • I have a Harry Potter add . . . yes!

  • I tell Your Mom jokes to my sister all the time. :[

  • "And another thing. . . DANG IT!"

    I just about died.

  • Selling out is like

"hey nerdfighters! I was just enjoying an ice cold dr. Pepper, the best soda you can get, along with some Cheetos which are the best chips in the world. They are extremely inexpensive and you can go to your local walmart or target to get some! Don't delay!

  • @GumiYummi not really selling out is appealing to a larger demographic while alienating your previous demographic in order to get more followers or in this case views.

  • @sethboy66 Well seeing as John specifically said "Nerdfighters what do you think selling out is?" and thats what I would think selling out is. If John or Hank said that I would think that he was selling out. So you can tell me I'm wrong but seeing as what I said was an opinion you can't prove me wrong.

  • @GumiYummi i'm not saying you are wrong i am just saying that me saying "i love dr.pepper" does not mean i am selling out it's just me stating an opinion.

  • I don't have to buy anything to be a nerdfighter? Thank god! I'm broke!

  • i really do not care if you advertise something for money as long as what you say about said product is what you actually think about the product.

  • @sethboy66 absolutely. liking a product and saying so and getting paid talk up a product aren't mutually exclusive.

  • selling out is saying/doing things that you do not believe in because somebody pays you :P

  • A.

  • OMG!When it says is my husband gay?I think youtube wants Sarah to think is John cheating on me for a Poe bust? That is a funny thing.

  • A.

  • a) I trust you guys not to sell out.

    You're too awesome for that

  • At the end you gave your puff a finger mustache XD

  • @TheFrolickingLlamas Gotta say, your name made me so happy :')

  • @TheEllieburger Ahaha thanks yours made me happy too :D

  • ahhh back in the old days of the side bar

  • I would buy a yearly subscription to vlogbrothers before I bought a yearly subscription to a newspaper, not because I think vlogbrothers is a viable substitute for a newspaper, but because news is easy to find for free in a variety of places. Vlogbrothers is only available in a few places. Your rarity is precious.

  • 2:07 please tell this to my sister!

  • @Silverballoons I've got the same problem

  • @danakaDENt Yeah, I don't like her very much. She calls me "nerd" as an insult. -_-

  • More info in the side bah-?

  • Google doesn't NEED to do these annoying ads to keep youtube going. It's just an excuse to put the ads there. google makes more than enough money and could support the older and better youtube without them with EASE. You vlogbrothers are coddled by google for your big numbers of viewers seeing the ads. You make money off of your nerdfighter minions with your shitty books and music and look good by showing FAKE benevolence. It's ALL an angle.

  • @beaviz810izback Captain Conspiracy Theory! Need I address your comments on EVERY video? A LOT of the money the Vlogbrothers make go to charity. It is NOT an angle. And yes, I will be replying to all of your comments that I see. Please, if you have negative opinions of the nerdfighting community, try stating them respectfully, or even constructively. Good day, sir/madame. (I'll probably see a nearly identical comment of yours on the next video I watch.)

  • @janethebookworm. I present the truth and idiots like you don't like it. It's an angle. it's not a conspiracy theory, it is what it is, an angle. it works for the vlogbrothers and it works for google, it's a win win financially for the both of them. You don't see it because you do not want to see it.

  • @beaviz810izback Now I'm reminded of The Matrix. I am now 98% certain that you are a troll. Not to sound too rude, but do you even know what you're talking about? What made you believe this? What, does John stash his blood money in the puff? Is Hank hoarding all his charity profits to genetically create a puppy-sized elephant? (Who the eff is Hank, anyways?)

Also, this has been a really fun argument, but I'll stop spamming the comments by feeding trolls. (God, I hope you're a troll!)

  • @janethebookworm. So anybody who opposes these assholes is a "troll" huh? Using labels as a way to control. I never said it was "blood money." It is simply money that he makes off of people that see him as benevolent. It's the perfect cover up! Be the good guy and get the rewards, it's a win win for google and the vlogbrothers. The few "good" things they do won't help the world, it'll only help the vlogbrothers and google make more money because of the recognition.

  • TALKING ABOUT MONEY IS ICKY.

  • As soon as 5 of the Katherines realized you had no pants, they hid their faces.

  • i didn't sell out, i bought in!

  • I don't feel like you're selling out. You mention your books, but there's no pressure to buy it. We buy it because we like your writing. Don't worry!

  • Its only selling out if you say you think something shouldn't happen then you do it because someone paid you to do it. It works with things you say should happen as well though.

  • I bet wacky string paid you to say that haha, just kidding.

  • most of the ads i see on vlogbrothers videos are... for PIZZA!

  • John, Hank, I trust you both completely and I think you already know if/when you would sell out, which, by the way, hasn't happen yet. :]

  • i like your test. sounds like it works.

  • Who the bloit is Hank?

  • I can't remember when exactly but one of John's videos had on the video and ad for what to do when you are pregnant and on the side an ad for pregnancy tests.

And no. This was before Henry.

  • 'I assume no one wants to pay for vlogbrothers videos.'

    Ha. HAHAHA. MHAHA-

Oh, wait. You're serious? Silly, silly man. If payment was what it took to get my weekly dose of you guys, I'd gladly pay up - and so would the majority of nerdfighters out there, I should think.

  • @KahiFanyTaemin4ever I would pay too but I wouldn't be watching their videos from start to finish. I am cheap but I will make room in my budget for John and Hank Green.

  • Sexy Polish Girls in the UK - Meet Now. Oh YouTube, 20 months on and you're still doing it.

  • i trust you not to sell out. and i think that you are perfectly fine the way it has been thus far......

but if you do sell out, so help me god i will unsubscribe so fast it will make your head spin.

  • this reminds me of one of Hayley's videos. i think one about how to be an "awesome" youtuber. you're so right about selling out and what it isn't.

  • The second you stop doing something because you love it, and start doing it for the money (Or, at the very least, the dollar signs over weigh the passion for said.... whatever it is your doing), you are a sellout. CONGRATULATIONS, EXPECT A MASSIVE BACKLASH FROM YOUR FANS.

Thankfully, you guy's have not sold out, nor do I expect you to... nerd's don't sell out. BEST WISHES

  • This yo mama joke made me really happy ^_^

  • I'm sorry to troll, but 4:01???? unacceptable.

  • @abarrellofmonkeys i think he has been punished since htis video is rather old.... but then again there is no 4:00

  • @abarrellofmonkeys it skips 4:00

  • @abarrellofmonkeys it skipped 4:00. so technically it's 4:01 but really its 4 minitues long

  • I would pay to watch your videos!!! Only you though. Seriously.

  • @2SilverRings FUCK your Honda civic I've a horse outside!!!

Irish songs ftw!! also Irish nerdfighters ftw!!

  • Pick what color you want your Honda Sivic to be!

  • Comment removed

  • @2SilverRings SUBARUS FOR MASTERS OF SCIENCES AND MATHS!!!!!!!!

  • @KINDspotting holy mother of capslock dude, calm down.

  • @2SilverRings Okay, sorry :D

  • The ad says "tired of being overweight? Get fit with zumba!" hmm..

  • Just saying, the bookshelf looks amazing and impressive that way. I think you should keep it like that.

  • I've been working my way through these video's for the past three weeks and I gotta say, even though this was ages ago, that i think you deserve every cent you get out of this. So I'd choose option A. I trust you guys, and you both entertain me ridiculously. I spent $100 on the Friends boxset last month and you're more entertaining, and worth more than them.

  • this time it was the mini countryman. D:

  • When you mentioned paying for vlogbrothers videos, my immediate thought was "Oh, someone will put it on youtube."

  • Lol, during this whole video the ad box next to it was just a blue screen. :D

  • avon ad this time, john

  • avon lip gloss ad this time, john

  • my mom says "your mom" jokes. It's quite hilarious

  • selling out is when you put up an ad in something you do not use or like yourself

And i say C is the best option

  • the ad below you says:

    Watch ads online

    :)

  • "Do you think talking about money is just kinda gross?" Nerd jokes, nerd jokes, nerd jokes!

  • I don't want a mail order bride..nor a scientologist.

And I trust you John, and you too Hank. I've met you. And you were awesome.

I was filled with the false hope of hugging John, however.

But that hope was self-fueled, you did nothing to lead me to the conclusion that I could hug you.

I got free candy though! And I met Craig.

    So really, it was compensated.

  • I envy the fact that he has a stack of copies of An Abundance of Katherines when I can't find even a single fucking copy where I live :/

  • Sellout = An action in which principles are compromised for financial gain; A person who compromises their principles for financial gain or An event for which all tickets have been purchased. Since Your none of these, problem solved.

sometimes a simple definition can do wonders for people.

    And i love Google define.

  • PUFF!!!!

  • I am going with A. I believe that you guys know what you're doing and I haven't had to spend a dime on your fantastic videos. You're discussing your life and if money just so happens to be involved then so be it.

  • Must....Buy....John's....Books... O_O

  • My adds are almost always for Pizza =D

I really like how you handle it: You tell us what you did/wrote/etc., but you don't force us to spend money for it - also it's a huge difference if you try to sell stuff you made on your own or products from other companies - THANKS! ;-)

As for the questions I'd stick with B, although I find it very brave to give us the chance of picking what you said in C.

  • I think there is no such thing as selling out. I think it is a version of the "no true scotsman," logical fallacy, and is begging the question. It doesn't really attack someone's argument, it just attacks their character.

  • Haha, the video transcribe thing (that shows what he is saying when he is saying it) is glitching. This is what it said.

"Because like I assume that no one wants to pay for barbra studios annie get your brother"

  • A) I don't think you would ever sell it out, and you caring about NOT selling us out, proves that to me. thankyou.

  • B.

  • No, you're definitely not selling out. Why would anyone even say that?

  • I love when you don't have any pants on. :D

  • @CassieWinslowFan That's what she said.

  • @goldenqilin I am a she, and I did indeed say that.

  • i like your books in back

  • i honestly wouldn't mind you guys "selling out", just because the Nerd fighter community is so, as you said, "tight-knit", and if we saw you tell us how great wacky silly string is, we'd understand it's for the good of Nerd Fighteria.

  • awww im from chicago and this is from like a year ago!!

but i like the new cover to paper towns!

  • this... this vid ... is ...is over 4 minutes

  • @tayjasmith i think youtube adds a second sometimes, so it might technically be 4 mins. I don't think they count vids that are 4:01

  • "Nerdfighters, please note that you never have to buy anything to be a Nerdfighter."

I haven't bough any of your(your guyses? grr lexical gaps>.<) stuff... mostly because I have no money to buy much stuff with...

  • @ChristalClear I believe it would be "guys'."

Guys is plural, and the apostrophe is possessive, but if you want to put those two together, the apostrophe goes after the s.

...and If I'm wrong, I'm sure another nerdfighter will be kind enough to help xD

  • @ChristalClear and @TheNintendOtaku I think that it would be guys' for the possessive plural, but I think that you could just take it out altogether, in this context. "I haven't bought any of your stuff..." still implies that it's from John and Hank. Technically, only John, since this is his video, but since they're one channel you can count that. Idk if that helps :P DFTBA!

  • "Nerdfighters, please note ha you never have to buy anything to be a Nerdfighter."

I haven't bough any of your(your guyses? grr lexical gaps>.<) stuff... mostly because I have no money to buy much stuff with...

  • An Abundance of Katherines leapt off the shelf to see you without pants on.

(I gave in to temptation and bought a song off itunes, and as I foresaw, now I want to buy all the CDs too...)

  • I don't think it's selling out that you guys promote t-shirts, i think it's actually a good thing, cause i've been watching for a while, and i always wanted to walk around with an awesome nerdfighter shirt, its worth the money, and it shows that im a fan and supports you guys

  • the ad next to your head is hank! its an ad for his cd and DFTBA.com

  • "I'm not wearing any pants" With the ad for costumes next to you

  • this was posted on mah birthday :D

  • Just for the record, John, I think it's safe to say that I would pay to watch vlogbrothers' videos, if it came to that.
