Even something as simple as playing a song would be considered music theory, as your still learning the basic ways in which playing the music works.

I don't know if you knew this but Matt said that back in 2004, which was also the reason for him double-tracking most cleans on Ember to Inferno. On Ascendancy they were all single-tracked, they sounded fabulous and his singing has been awesome since then, even live. Especially on the Crusade tours when he didn't scream at all, which was a pity, but his singing was top notch. See the Ember to Inferno Live video.
