My father is now 91. He, his father and brothers all fought in HK during WWII. He was actually the last person captured alive as he had been seriously wounded and was being cared for by some local Chinese villagers out on their sanpan (just off Stanley). My father was one of the Royal Scott's volunteers.

You need to ask why the Europeans / Americans had colonized almost every Asian country prior to WW2. Who gave them the legal right to do that ? What Imperial Japan did was to take back the conquered lands & return them to Asians.

In case you don't know, most Asians countries were under the barbaric rules of Western powers prior to WW2. Most of those colonies gained independences shortly after the War, inspired by Japan's gallant fight.

stupid british.... they had a defencive line that they sayd would hold of the japs for 2 weeks... but they only sent 45 men to the line, and the japs pasted it in minutes... then 2000 canadians wer left to fight 20 000+ japs
@101andrewj The British were fighting in nearly every part of the world let alone face to face with the Germans. Hong Kong could not be a priority, that's surely why the Canadians were there in numbers in the first place - to help out in these remote battles. It's nothing to do with 'stupidity' or a bad decision, Britain simply didn't have a large enough population. Send 50,000 troops to Hong Kong and let London get invaded by the Nazi's? Oh yeah that would have been a bright move!
